Finally! Through my diplomatic skills on the phone i finally got the transmission in a crate that my dad built and we shipped off the KA24 transmission JGY sent me and as soon as it arrives JGY is sending me an RB20DET transmission. Transaction solved, they're paying for evreything but shipping back to them, which is fine with me because they're giving me store credit for the shipping cost.

Damn where the hell are you getting these things? Is your slave and master cylinder in good shape or you clutch pedal adjusted?

I had the exact same problem! I have a KA24DE - and I had the motor out to replace and fix a bunch of stuff - So I installed the transmission on the motor out of the car.Man I wish I would have checked this before I put it all back in the car!

Well needless to say I was finishing up my 5 speed swap yesterday - all I liked was installing the shifter to spin the driveshaft over to tighten the nuts - and what do you know it wont go into gear! - can even get it over to 3-4-5-R - I could get it into 1-2 but it still wasnt in gear (DS wont spin)

So I talked to a few people and luckily someone had read this thread - and told me to search for it here on NICO!!

I had just poured in brand new Red Line MT-90 too - so I had to go out and buy a brand new drain pan to save as much as I could - hopfully I dont have to buy another quart! That stuff is not cheap!

And I had to drain the Clutch master cylinder - remove the slave cylinder - starter - intake - transmission X member - loosen MM nuts - and then pull the transmission from under the car on jack stands - alone! Man I was pissed!I recommend never pulling the transmission from under the car its one of the biggest PITA I have ever dealt with! Not to mention its Dangerous!Wooohhoooo transmission is fixed now!

I feel like a dumb *** though - because I had already pulled the rear of the transmission off to install a new striking arm - the previous owner took it for his RB B&M shifter.

And I didnt even think to look at the shifting rods! I have never heard of anything like this before! But it looks like it happens!

As it turns out somehow - the transmission was in 3rd and 5th gears at the same time - but like you guys stated just remove the front cover and push in the rods from there - well thats cool if its in 2-4-R - But if its in 1-3-5 - You will have to pull the rear of the transmission off - Because you cant pull the rods from the front cover. o their is another 411 on this problem fix

I think this should be made a sticky so all 5 speed transmission owners are able to read this!

After it happens to you - you know what to look for - but if you have never heard about it before and this happens - you are clueless - and pissed because you think someone sold you a crap transmission!

Just FYI, jds, you wont be able to turn the output shaft if its in gear in first or second. If you can turn the driveshaft while its in first or second, then YOU REALLY have a problem. It takes alot of torque to move that *****.

Just think about it for a second. I put my Z in first gear on hills without the e-brake on because the cables are old. When i let the clutch in, it doesn't move. Same principle applies to try moving it when you have the transmission out.

Just take that plate off, tap those rods even across the three of them, and then move it in and out of all the gears a good set of times and put it all back together.

Yeah I wasnt thinking when I said that - I fixed my last night by pulling off the rear of the transmission because 2 of my rods were in rather than out.

torqued my short shifter on there and put the shift knob on.. I can slam it into every gear but the car is still in gear... are the forks still the problem on this? I wish I had a stock shifter!

Well not to sure - I would think so as I could shift mine too - but it would not go over to 5-R

There are 3 rods - each rod shares a gear so to speakrod 1 = 1-2rod 2 = 3-4rod 3 = 5-R

yours might actually be stuck in 2-4-R or 1-3-5 - meaning all 3 rods are pushed forward (1-3-5) or backward (2-4-R). Rather than being in the middle like they should be.

well I dont know - I am trying to figure out how that would work - but it makes no sence really as far as what you are mentioning.

Your best bet - seeing as you will have to pull it anyways - pull the rear of the transmission and check out the rods and then go from there.

thanks. Yeah I'm going to have to pull it off, shouldn't be that bad.. I need a radio flyer wagon or something to haul it back to the garage cause the last time I picked it up and took it to the garage it was damn heavy and it irritated my lower back. When I was putting the SR bellhousing on the three rods wouldn't line up into the holes that easy .. the middle one was off to the side a tad.. so I flipped it upside down and sat the bellhousing on the ground and wiggled the rear of the transmission in till it sat down.. maybe I did something to the rods during all that wiggling... By the way.. how will I be able to tell that my transmission is in neutral? I will be able to freely turn the input shaft, right? And when in gear... it shouldn't move that much...?

input shaft will move either wayYou will be able to tell its in neutral by moving each of the 3 rods up and down and keeping them in the center (neutral)Also you might note that the shifter rod and fork will be able to come out of the gear rods - but on the rear of the transmission there are 2 spring loaded bolts on the sides they keep the shifter rod from coming out - just to let you know that.

hey when I was taking off the bellhousing... there were some bolts that had a spring and bearing.. what in the world were those for?

I dont really remember its been a while since I pulled a bellhousing - I would look in the FSM for that one If you need one - download it off my site in the FSM sectionhttp://www.KA24DETDVD.org
