Funny how topics come up sometimes. When we were all younger (say 12 and under), we had our dreams of what we'd be doing for a living as an adult. I wanted to be an automotive designer. I have been many things since then; a draftsman, a speedshop owner, a martial arts instructor ... but never made it to that. I just wasn't the schooling kind of person. Did you follow through, and if not why?

I always wanting to be a Chiropractor or a Car Designer when I was a kid. I always thought I would end up doing production work(videography, audio tech, stage lighting, ect) since I did a lot of contract and volunteer work as a teenager though, I did finally get a job in production a couple of years ago and it was the most miserable 8 months of my life. Now i'm a graphics/website designer and I love every minute of it, something I had always done as a hobby but never thought it would work for a career.

As a kid I always like to break things and put them back together. Wasn't sure what it was I wanted to be. A couple of years ago I wanted to be a master tech at Toyota but soon realized there is more money in the diesel field. Now I'm currently training to be a Cummins Power Gen. Tech...

Doctor. But every person I talk to, every advisor I meet with... it sounds okay I guess, but isnt the exciting field I thought it would be when I was 10. If I did go in, it'd be for dentistry. Don't ask me why I'm obsessed with teeth. Every girl I've ever liked or dated got a Sonicare for her birthday. I'd be very open to going back to school, taking prerequisite courses, and going for dental school.

But right now, I'm looking for work in sales, marketing, or operations management in the auto industry. Hospitality management sounds like fun too. I also want to start two more businesses.

TOO MANY PLANS NOT ENOUGH FOCUS IM GOING TO END UP LIVING IN A CARDBOARD BOX YELLING AT PEDESTRIANS

I'd say I've gotten reasonably close. I've always had a passion for cars, trying to drive every single make out car available in the US and becoming a professional racecar driver. I settled for making it hobby, getting a competition license as an amateur, now teaching hi performance driving at racetracks, which has helped me along with the driving/riding every make car quest.

I've still got a few cars to go (not that many), but most are exotic (like a McLaren), or long extinct (Amphicar, Tucker). I have my eye on a couple of them right now and seem to snare a couple per year.

An old College buddy had an interesting life goal. He always wanted to urinate into the Grand Canyon. I had met him several years after graduation and asked him if he ever fulfilled his goal. He smiled and nodded. He also had told me his next life's goal was to urinate into every ocean. I think he's still working on it.

Not What I dreamed but Pretty much knew what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. Sadly I am pretty sure I had most things figured out by 16.

I work for my Mum.

I wanted to own a tea shop but that's more of a retirement plan at this point or whenever convenient.

I'm sorta in the same boat as Joel. While I dreamed I'd be in the monocoque of a Ferrari, fighting for a F1 title when I was younger, I'm at least taking my racing to the highest level I'm capable of and I'm fully comitted to it.

But no, when I was younger, I never dreamed I'd be a Network Engineer.

No I am. And by "astronaut xenobiologist", of course I mean "middle manager in an office job" and by "faraway planet", of course I mean "big corporation".

Who doesn't want a Sonicare? I splurged for the top-end model and don't regret it.

I guess I'm part of a fortunate few living a childhood dream. Well, I don't have a monster truck...yet. Though I'd get a kick out of the Land Cruiser.

This is a good thread. Me and my roommate were just talking about this tonight.

When I was in the 3rd grade I got the crazy idea in my mind that I wanted to be some kind of aircraft engineer.

Now here I am, 21 years old and a senior at Liberty University attempting to get into law school under a business planning focus so that I can become a corporate attorney.

My ideas of a dream career have changed, but the passion and ambition that I have towards them haven't.

Ironically, I never really dreamed of being a firefighter as a kid, haha. Always wanted to race F1.

I wanted to do / be lots of things. A teacher, a nurse, a writer, an architect, a dog trainer, a corporate business woman who traveled the world as a interpreter for a fortune 500 company.

At 16, I also made the statement that I never wanted to (a) get married, (b) have kids, (c) work in a factory. I have done those 3 things and I am a better woman for it. Did I ever dream that I would meet some of the most incredible people in the world on a car forum, marry the CEO, and live happily ever after? Nope, but I sure am glad I did.

*Also, the nursing profession idea has come back around. I am currently in school studying to be a Hospice nurse.*

That nursing stuff is no joke. I have a few lady friends in the nursing program here at school and they barely have enough time to breath...

Hospice nursing always seemed like a double-edged sword to me. On the one hand, the kind of care you're giving is more about making the patient comfortable and probably provides for a greater opportunity for bonding (when the patient is actually cognizant). On the other hand, the patient will die under your care. Good luck, Bex!

As for me, I believe my earliest dream was to be a paleontologist, and I waffled between that and car design. Then, out of high school, I started out aiming to be an actor, but within a year I had returned to car design. I got my degree in Industrial Design and wound up here... and now I'm trying to claw my way out of this hell-hole as a lawyer.

I think my dream right now, if I'm allowed to have them still, is to work within public policy-making, but I'm pretty sure I don't want the scrutiny of public office. Though I really want to take a great number of classes to be sure of where I want to go, if I had to choose right now, I'd say that Environmental Law is calling to me.

I'm much more responsible now than I thought I'd be when I was in high school.

If you'd asked me then, I'd have replied than in ten years they'd throw me in jail for finding a chopped-up Mexican hooker in my refrigerator, distributed amongst several jars.

Now I have a job, a house, married, kid on the way, generally responsible. I've no idea how that occurred.

I gave my resume to Cummins looking for a mechanical engineering related internship for next summer. You should pass the word around that I'm awesome ;)
