The Ride: 2005 G35 Sedan 215/55/R17 Goodyear Eagle RSA ...29K miles ...2/32 left on them...

They are ok...sometimes i push the car...tires are spinning a lot and VDC is kicking in but im guessing thats because of the low rubber left...

My options (What Firestone offered me):

Falken Ziex 912Bridgestone Turanze EL-42

Question...are used tires off ebay any good? What do i need to know if i buy tires online?

The firestone is putting the EL-42 in for $119 x 4 out the door ..includes tire, labor, valve stems, balancing...

would appreciate your thoughts guys...

I personally would never buy used tires, whats the point, the life span will be less then if they were new so does it really justify the cost? Tires are also a safety critical part of your car, I wouldnt want to mess with anything dodgy.

Falken are an excellent brand though, I've used GBR2's and they are excellent and relatively good value.

2/32 is very dangerous if you got in an accident you could be found at fault due to worn or damaged equipment. Cop stopping you for other things could give you a fix it ticket for your tires that may carry a fine.

To answer your question... depends. If they are close enough to new and you trust the seller then yes. I always by my track tires used off ebay.

Think about the mounting and balancing charge for tires the may already be worn and decide if you are really saving money.

Check out discount tire's ebay auctions... new tires + free shipping + used tire prices

I've SOLD a couple tires on ebay. And the guy was happy with them.I would check feedback carefully. You might be buying somebody else's problems....balancing, worn uneven...

You should replace tires at 4/32nd to avoid hydroplaning.

Sounds like a good price on the bridgestones.

I went with Yoko Avids, Nissan installed & aligned for $710 out the door.

To me buying a used tires like buying used shoes. I would never do it.I like ebay. You can get lot of things from there but used tires, hm I wouldn't buy. You can get good deals on new tires just have to find a place.

last 3 guys got it wrong....the USED tires is for 8-9/32...and its a thought since i am planning to keep the G for another 6 months only...so getting a 4 set off ebay for $250 shipped (Michelin/BF Goodrich) actually doesnt sound too bad to me...what i dont know is how much installation/stems/balancing might cost once they get here....

re-read my notes...and the tires are actually at 4/32 right now....but good advice from the first few posters...

are the tires take offs?

Another thing to consider with used tires

You don't know if they were ran at a unsafe air pressure and have side wall damage as a result.

The bead of the tire isn't going to be in as good shape as a new tire.

If your saving 50% I say go for it.

That information might have been useful at the beginning of the thread. Though, I know if I was purchasing a vehicle, I wouldn't want to buy one with worn tires on it. Kinda makes it look like the owner didn't even take care of the simple things.

Go ahead and buy some new tires at a good price, and you can sell your car for an extra grand when the time comes.

How do you know the car where the tires from were align good proper tire pressure, etc. We know how bad some of the tires can be. You can inherit all the problems with the tires.

You posted a question about worth to buy a used tire or not. If you don't want to hear honest opinions then why the post is? As it was saying before it is an investment. Sell it or not. If you sell it it will be sold a lot easier and for more then if you have used worn tires on. In 6 months the used tire can wear to the part where you need other ones.Just my .02

I personally would never buy used tires. Your life depends on brakes and tires so that is not a place to try an economize. Here is my previous post on tires.

All you paranoid old farhts.

To the OP,

Check out etiresmarket, they have some pretty good deals on 17s. I got a set of Potenza RE040s for $100 shipped with around 70% tread. They do occasionally loose tires though, so order early and ask them for a back up option if the original isn't available (they have a huge wearhouse (SP?) in SoCal with thousands of tires. They're bound to get lost some time).

I've run probably 3 sets of used tires on my I30. Mostly bridgestones. My only regret was the last set I put on there. I was poor at the time and started replacing them in singles with non-matching.... NEVER EVER do non-matching side to side. Front to back if fine, but not side to side.

Never had an issue with the other 3 sets. Just make sure there are no patches and that the tread is even and you should be good.

Also, how the hell is the new buyer going to know that you sold them a car with used tires???

When your tread is as low as his, I'm pretty sure one can tell.

Maybe you misunderstood them...I think they were saying in response to you originally stating your tires were at 2/32, that that's dangerous, one should replace tires at 4/32.

I've bought a couple of sets of tires on ebay. First set, no problem, almost new. The second set was "new" but I found out later that the tires were out of date when the treads started separating at 10k. You really need to pay attention to the reviews.

If the vehicle were involved in an accident where a death occurred and was related to a tire failure or blowout, a smart lawyer and an investigation could determine who the original purchaser of the tires were. Failure to disclose used tires could open up a huge can of worms. Not worth it in my opinion.

I must not have emphasize PARANOID enough lol.

It is the driver's responsibility to verify the integrity of the parts on the vehicle, not the sellers responsibility to disclose to the buyer that used tires were installed.

I don't doubt that in extreme cases, used tires can cause major harm, but for the most part, the tires are use...so what? It's not like they were used for some purpose other than the one I'm using them for.

I bought the 4 tires on my coupe for $211 installed. The rears are Hankooks and the fronts are Michellins. Both pairs had over 79% tread when I bougth them.

AtlzBest26,After reading the responses and thinking about how somebody might misuse/abuse their tires, I would say to SELL your used tires if you can but never BUY used tires.

You really don't want to cut corners on your tires...

LoL and Lol again...guys...i thank you all for the implied thriftness, criticism and advice.

i hear you all...but some of you need to tone down a bit...someone might get pissed off and sell you crappy tires...

seriously...some of the points here are pretty good...thx! i am not here to cheat my car or anyone...i am only evaluating the pros and cons of buying off ebay...i dont have an issue going out and picking Z rated Michelins...

i think this has beaten around enough...lets call it a day...

I enjoy reading your posts and I remember back when I was your age.Age does change ones outlook on many things.

I'm no tire expert and I know the tires on coupes are different between the front and rear but having different brands on front and rear somehow doesn't seem quite right to me? Not sure how that affects handling in a panic situation.I believe tires should always be replaced in pairs and if at all possible use the same brand all around. Just my opinion and $.02

I was just pondering that same concept yesterday. My wife and I are temporarily staying at her parents house until we find another house/studio to rent. I guess one of the boys across the street just got his license and my mother-in-law says he thinks he has to make it to 60mph (in a residential) before he slow down for the turn.

I enjoy driving crazy too, but in the past couple of years, the need for reckless speed has been replaced with the need for safe speed.

So, I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that with age comes wisdom (for some), accumulation of net profit (more for another motorist to sue you for), and diminished amounts of testosterone (...).

With regards to the tires. I would have rather had matching front and rears, but then again, I'd also like to be able to rotate my tires lol. Handling is pretty good with the setup I have now. I wish the hankooks were a little stickier and had stiffer sidewalls, but they still hold very well in turns. I don't ever take the G sideways, so I'm ok with front and rear frictions being slightly off.

Hope you always take my comments in jest, Howard.
