I have had 2004 M45 since it was new. I have had almost no issues as to reliability. However, I have way less miles on mine that what you are looking at. Is it gas hog, it all depends on what you think is a gas hog is. Over the years, depending on how I drive it I get between 18-24 mpg. It does need premium gas. Per your question, I have heard that the motors can hit 200K with no issues, but that depends on how well they are maintained. I get all my service at a private, no dealer mechanic.

Hope this helps make your decision. The 2003/2004 models are virtually identical except for some minor changes.
