Hey,

Is it legal to run a JDM sr20det engine in an American 240sx? Just wondering cuz I wanna get a a beater 240, maybe a salvage, which means it'll have to be inspected. If it's not legal anybody know some loopholes, or just plain ways to get away with it? Thanx.

Yeah, use the search, but i hate saying that. No, its not legal, there have been some long threads about this. If your in cali, you could never make it pass emmissions. But in texas, there have been a few people make it pass testing with the engine in it, the guys never check if there is a different engine in there, they just want it to pass.

do the inspections right before you swap, then like the day after swap in the SR......then hope you never have to get it inspected.

my dad's friend does state inspections, so im off the hook:D

1. um....you have to get your car inspected everyyear....

2. So your dad does state inspections....do you know what goes into an inspection? do you know that every inspection is video taped, and its made 'almost' impossible to do a illegal inspection in NY now...Yes it can be done, but they do come to check the video tapes (which take a picture of the dyno, and the car on the dyno at an unspecified time, and matches the picture up against the vin number to see if the car matches), and they check about 3 or 4 inspections to make sure they are done right....then they also combat against taking the sensor out of the actual exhaust, which people used to do, by having a minimum and maximum levels that the car must have.

YES you can have your daddy do an illegal inspection, but most mechanics and inspectors wont chance it....And he risks the chance of having his inspection liscense taken away.

In Canada, people pass emission testing with the SR engine. All you have to do is leave the emission devices on the engine.

Most people plug the AIV hole and disable the function. This alone can defeat the purpose of the CAT during the idle test.

Also, it is important to get an efficient catalytic converter. A new 3" CAT will definetly be better than the stock old 2" CAT.

Here, many people have their car inspected for illegal modifications and the SR don't seem to bother the inspectors. It is mainly the ride height, bumpers, and exhaust tones that fail those cars. The snail under the hood shouldn't be something to worry about, in Canada at least.

Is there anybody here who lives in Washington state who could give me info on how they got away with an sr20 engine? Particularly anyone who rebuilt one with a salvage title. Thanks for the info so far, I'll keep searching.

you dont need to be legal if you "pay a little extra" at emmisions.

That's the only good thing about living in Georgia, only Atlanta has emissions and inspections. I could stick a turbine engine in my fastback and drive, as long as I didn't cause an accident I wouldn't get pulled over!

We're gettin lucky in Louisville and they're doing away with the yearly emissions testing. Now you only have to be inspected by when purchasing an out of state vehicle. Of course there's no emission testing then, just a comparison of VIN# of car and motor.
