Another easy way to pass emissions is to lean out the engine big time right before you get inspected. They only inspect at low rpm's and don't boost so you will be safe and should pass. That's how alot of the RX-7 community passes emissions tests that way. Just a thought for some of you guys. Laterz.

SR20DET swap 'legal' question is going to get different answer in different states... If your state has smog inspections in most cases as long as you pass you should have no prob. Like one person said, "They dont care what kinda engine is in your car, as long as it passes" They arent the police, they are just doing a job!! In most states the law is that if the engine is different than what originally came in the car if must be of a newer year and falls under that years emissions regulations and specifications i.e. to make a simple example,,,, if you had a carburated '85 Camaro 305 you could swap in a 89 TPI 350 but not vice versa. But, you could put a 69 327 in the 85 but youd have to retain the emissions equip. and past 85 yr emissions specs.... Capice?

Sorry long explaination

Not sure if this would work or not. Havent found info on it. But many people goto the state smog referee to get there swap inspected and approved. Im just not sure if they will with the sr20det motor, they dont have a list or anything availiable. Anyone know?

i was wonderin the same, was thinkin sr for 90 240, but was worried bout smog. i rember hearing in that at least in so cal they have the that the engine must be newer than the car. but i'm still concerned on if it will pass or not. also i have to smog every 2 years. so if i did it right after, i would atleast have 2 years to worry bout it

Having a newer engine is useless, because engines not offered in the US are illegal.

no way around it in cali unless your cars an early 70's model or a desiel... 240's neither. best bet is to save a little xtra cash go to a small town and find billybobs smog shop... where the owner has 12 kids to feed.

my friend/mechanic calls up a certain shop and lets him know im coming... if its not busy i pass... busy i fail... then i go back when he's not and pass... but greasin a palm is your best bet that i know of.

It was SSC, and they were talking about Honda engines. There's no way to get an SR20DET legal, because it was never sold in the US.

Basically once the DMV flags your vehicle in the system, you're ****ed. Lots of luck finding a test only place that will pass you.
