Just purchased a used dryer from a co-worker because my old dryer had a bad bearing and eventually stopped working. The new dryer wants to blow the breaker the second I plug it in. I even left the dryer door open to make sure it wasn't trying to run. Everytime it pops the breaker. My question, based on some internet reading, says that old breakers may be the reason for this. I'm a car guy and this makes no sense to me at all, how can age play any roll in this? Or do I just not get it? The new used dryer ran at my co-workers house but doesn't here. The old dryer says it uses the same amount of amps and volts as the new. What am I missing here?

Check to make sure the cord is connected to the dryer properly. Did the plug match your outlet when you brought it home, or did you have to change it?

I don't know anything about the breakers, but unless they're ancient and in bad shape, I assume that wouldn't be the issue.

I don't know about your particular setup in your house but I've had old style breakers corrode internally and cause problems like this. I've also seen the dual breakers (typically used for higher amp stuff; like a dryer) have one side of the break go bad which puts all the strain on the other one. If your stove and dryer have the same breaker try switching them out, see if that does anything. Breakers are expensive and I'd hate to suggest buying one if you don't need it.

Other than that I would do like A33 said, double check the wiring for the plug. It's very possible that while moving the dryer from your co-worker's house to yours that a ground got yanked loose. That would explain why it worked at your buddies house and now isn't working at all.

Thanks guys. Sounds like a wiring issue after talking with a few people. I can fix a car but I can't install a dryer.

Goodluck and don't feel bad. Two totally different beasts. If we took what we learned from cars and tried to apply it to a house we'd be electrocuted almost immediately when you consider grounds on vehicles are almost always black, in a house that'll give you a bit of a tickle haha

Tickle, I like that.

I dont care what anyone says, every time I get zapped by residential wiring (110) I giggle like a little school girl.

Never been bit by 220 (crosses fingers)

Note to self, no matter how big and bold the sign hanging on the service panel is, if you are wiring receptacles, some retard will inevitably decide to turn on the breaker you dont want turned on.

The first thing I would try is swapping your old cord onto the new dryer to eliminate the plug and cord. They almost all have a diagram on the backside or under the panel that covers the wires. G/L

Is the dryer gas or electric?

It's electric. Check this out. So I popped the cover off the back to check the wiring and I am surprised I am still alive and able to talk about it. The reason I was seeing fireworks last night when I plugged it in is because someone before me had hacked up the wiring and left a hot wire dangling loose in a way that it could arc to the body of the dryer, I guess I am not the idiot in this story. Anyway the wiring panel is damaged and so I dropped it off at the local Maytag appliance store to be looked at. I should have a better grasp on the situation tomorrow once he has time to mess with it. He says that it doesn't look bad so I am crossing my fingers.

Holy sh*t, man. It's a wonder you didn't get knocked across the room. 240v is nothing to sneeze at.

Glad it was something simple.

Glad you're not dead! But if it goes badly in the future, can I have your truck?

...either one?

The Maytag store completely hooked me up. They rebuilt the entire dryer for 80 bucks. I should get a good ten years out of it. I just got it home and plugged it in, no fires!

I don't even own a dryer. I dumped the dryer fund into buying 1 badass washing machine. The clothes come out almost dry, and I just finish them off on a drying rack in a room I have that is pretty much all windows and sunlight.

Dryers destroy your electric bill :( I remember running it once at my old house and going outside to look at the meter. I swear it was spinning faster than my turbo.

I'd use a laundry mat if the nearest one to me wasn't 15 miles away. I live in the sticks.

Gas dryers are actually cheaper to operate per BTU, and cheaper to maintain. They only require a 110v outlet but you do need a natural gas or propane line run to the laundry closet.

Tough to use properly in the middle of Winter though.

Pics of rig-job. I am lucky I didn't get hit by 220v.

So that dude on the right wasn't anchored to anything? It was just sort of floating in space? That's intense man.
