You don't want to just take the muffler off... You want to get one to replace it with... if not it will be too loud and it will rattle the plastic on the inside of the cabin... trust me..

Cheapest way to amplify your exhaust note and to get some performance is to put on a nice cold air intake! This will amplify the tone of the car making it deeper and louder especially under some heavy throttle. This way you can keep your factory exhaust for now. Just a thought. I have the Nismo exhaust and it's pretty close to stock just a little louder and deeper but it goes well with my Injen cold air intake

Misinformation... and lots of it.

HFC (High flow Cats) and straight pipes WILL change the exhaust note. USUALLY, it will add noise. Sometimes just volume, many times it will add rasp. I think of rasp as talking with a horse voice.

On the flip side, just about every G35 exhaust sound similar. I have a feeling that has something to do with the engine moreso than the exhaust itself.

If you listen to the stock exhaust on the G35 coupe, 350Z, and FX35, they all sound very similar. Most of the aftermarket exhausts for those cars also sound similar (though varying in volume significantly).

I've heard 2 or 3 out of dozens of exhausts for the G and Z that don't have that pseudo exotic note. I want one of those

So despite the HFCs and Straight pipes change, their change might not be enough to be a problem for you.

I'd go to a professional exhaust shop (not Guido or Jose's muffler shop, but a really exhaust shop) and talk to them about your various options. It would also be to your benefit to understand what your cats, mid-pipe, and muffler do and how they affect your exhaust note.

When 4drmadness comes back from India, shoot him an email and ask him. He's gone through a ton of exhaust variations. Unfortunately, he has a sedan which adds another variable into the situation, but the fundamentals should be the same.

I don't know if he really mentioned which 'G' he has, but the wrong type of HFC could be bad news if it decided to come apart.

As far as exhaust, I find most of the sound clips I have heard actually sound more like the types of exhaust everyone seems to post that they hate, the ones on other Japanese rides. There are a few and maybe these are the ones you mention that sound like it belongs with a high performance luxury ride.

THANK YOU!!!

My belief is that people spend $1200-$2000 on an exhaust system and don't want to admit that their $35k G now sounds like a civic with a $100 eBay fart can.

Get a after market muffler.. Like a nismo... But keep the stock mid pipe!

BAD idea. Stock midpipe is one of the worst parts of the exhaust. It is crush-bent, so its effectively only 2.25 or 2" inside diameter. A better MP will open flow a lot.

SBD, High flow cats do not add rasp to the stock exhaust setup. The right HFC won't even add rasp to any setup. I have NO RASP and never had any with my HFC. They only make the stock a little deeper and louder. Its more of just an amplified sound. Test pipes on the other hand will rasp and normally quite a bit. I have heard of people wrapping them with header wrap and attenuating the rasp to almost nothing though.

The motordyne with the XYZ pipe really adds an exotic note. I had a guy at the Infiniti dealership tell me how much he loved the sound and how it sounded "exotic".

Pretty much. What I want are the sounds from Bullit and little bit of a mix of the Charger along with the GT40 or take your pick of the two different types of Mustangs (notice differences in exhaust as well as a few other things). Personally I liked the looks of my 67 body style over the 68 in the movie. Mine had headers with two extra long cherry bombs, sounded great at full tilt. That is the sound I would like to be able to obtain.
