I know its illegal to have these engine's in the car they didnt come stock in. My question is, has anyone ever been pulled over and caught with their engine, and if so what are the penalties?

one guy from the FA forums had that happen. Apparently he had to take it up the butt with no lube IIRC

I've been pulled over with my engine.Usually the cops just run your inspection sticker number and ask to make sure the motor is from the same year or later car.

But they can be asses and write loads of tickets if they wanna.

I think they can impound it and possibly destroy it in some states if they feel like being complete arses. :(

California has some of the strictest emissions legislation in the country. The legal consequences of having an illegal engine includes: fine and turning your car back to stock. That's the risk you run when having boost and living in CA.

Well...at least all the big cities are (including Dallas :'()

My advice: keep it lowkey, dont speed excessively, dont have an incredibly loud exhaust or a flashy car...be VERY nice to the officer and if you DO get pulled over, dont give them any reason to ask you to pop the hood. In fact, I'm going so far as to hide the gauges...currently my EGT gauge is very cleanly installed in my dash cluster :D and the water temp and oil pressure will not be EASILY visible through the drivers side window either.

One nice thing about CA, up where im going to college, in Humbolt county, you dont have to smog your car. Also across the street from where my uncle lives there is a 1/4 mile strip and auto-x course ususally every weekend.

I live in Cali and it concerns me. Especially at my age. But it is one of the reasons, I do what I can to make my car look minimally modded. The only exterior mods are the wheels, brakes exhaust and the mildly lowered stance. I got a speeding ticket last week and the cop who pulled me over never even questioned it. Avoid haveing guages ion the pillar and there is little hint to having anything else under the hood. I have a turbo timer and boost gauge under the radio, but I quickly covered it with some miscellaneous papers that I pulled out along with my registration. Plus the streering column makes it hard to see it. Just make sure to turn off the turbo timer when you stop. I'd rather coke the turbo than have to pull the whole damned thing off. I'd rather have a poor excuse to upgrade the turbo than be forced to remove the whole thing and still pay a fine. I've even sprayed a light coat of flat black paint on my intercooler. Draws very little attention. As a side bonus, makes it less likely to draw attention from would be theives as well. And sleepers are fun. Except when you get had my an M5. At night, they can be hard to recognize until you see the badge. And since the badge is on the rear, you tend to get a nice sinking feeling of defeat as it positions itself to show you what type of 5 series it is. They sound bad-*** though.

I'm glad they don't have emissions around where i live, but in the newspaper they are talking about bad air conditions. Thats the bad side about living a couple miles from the AM General Hummer Plants. Nick

How many cops do you think actually know that a 240 didnt come with a turbo? And how many actually know what a turbo looks like? Sure you will get a few who know their way around under a hood, but most dont. however, ive been told they have been giving classes to cops on what to look for in "modded cars".The ones who do know about cars, might even be impressed (especially if its Aries' 240), and will just let you go. Thats happened to me, but not in the 240.

Cops are becoming more educated on these matters. Many are actually impressed with a lot of the cars. But if you are breaking the law, you are breaking the law. Some care, some don't. Some just use it as a way to bust you if they could not bust you for something else. Why make it easy on them to do this?

I don't really get looks from cops. I have a front license plate. The piss yellow paint, holes in my decklid, stock suspension, and bubbled purple tint. The only thing that even gives anything away is my FMIC, the exhaust (which I'm debating on replacing), and my 6" phase2 sticker.

Yeah, your car doesnt exactly scream "illegal high performance".

Anyway, the cops cant just pull you over because they think your car MIGHT be illegaly modified. You have to be doing something wrong first. Having a aftermarket exhaust isnt an excuse for them either (unless they are obnoxiously loud), as many exhausts are street legal these days. If they harrass you, say **** em and move to Montana!

Thats not true, the guy Keyy was talking about was pulled over for reasonbale cause, he wasn't speed nor taking a turn where he shouldn't. As it is cops can define anything as reasonable cause and that freshalloy guy was a prime example. I don't have a picture but he had a very very aggresice body kit and shiny paint and a massive front mount IC. Then he asked the cop why he pulled him over and the cop said "pop the hood son." IIRC, maybe Keyy can correct me. so you see police officials can pull you over for any reason might not be just. But I would rather him pull over a everyone suspecious, becuase in doing so they could pull someone over with a dead body in the trunk.. So yeah if your really scared of getting pulled over in California for having a Engine which isn's Legal THEN DON'T DO IT! or just shell out a bunch of cash to places like Motorex. just my humble opinion..

PS; ever get that hideous Supra wing off your car, dude? edit: yeah i here as far as destroying the car here in california.. but thast just talk you hear...

I dont think the cops car much here in Louisiana...90% of the people around here are ricers in Honda Civics that don't even understand the words "engine work"...besides, I know about 20 people in lifted 4x4 chevy's that have straight pipes with no cat or exhaust...I think you would have to get out of your car and slap an officer just to get him to write you a ticket for something other than speeding or not wearing a seat belt...

I've always wandered what would happen if you were from a non-emmisions state (Like here in FL we have no emmisions testing whatsoever) And went to vist a friend/family etc. in Cali where the rules are quite strict. Can they ticket you for having an illegally modded car even if your not from that state? Just curious cause I have a few cross country trips planned where I'm thinking of driving instead of flying.Ryan

thou art correct

BTW, you DO NOT have to pop the hood if they ask you to, but they will probably impound your car if you don't...

Ryan(s),

I don't think so, but I'm not sure. Kinda falls under the "you-don't-have-to-get-emissions-testing-if-your-car-is-registered-in-another-state-but-you-still-live-here" rule I'd assume.

New York . . is the worst.... (notice the period). I bet once i get my RB . . . and if I get caught in it . .I"ll be in jail, pay a huge fine, have my car taken, and some other stuff too . .to be honest, cops are just ridiculous. I've seen them let crazy fast female drivers go all the time, but if they see a young guy in a car that they even think looks fast .. your screwedddddd upp tthe azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Ok so what exactly is the law about popping your hood? I understand that if a cop asks you, you ahve the right to ask them why. Basically they have to have probable cause or a warrant (which they wont). But what I dont understand is what exactly is probable cause? Im in Cali BTW.

If a cop wants to look under your hood. They need a search warrant. SInce they don't have one, they can't do sh*t. Tell them that. They might impound the car at the most while they try and get a warrant. but unless you are doing something very wrong, they won't be able to get one. Besides, who the ***** do they think they are giving someone a ticket for an "illegal" engine? You don't see anone getting a ticket for putting a 350 in an S-10. Me and my Remington 870 say "you aren't taking my car."
