Service engine light came back on... does anyone know of a way to pull the code without going to the dealer or mechanic?

I used to have a dodge dakota... and to pull the code, you turn the key 3 times to the ignition (but don't start it) and the code came up on the odometer... would be nice if all of them did that.

thanks

Your local Autozone (or Advance Auto) can pull the codes for free. Or you could buy an OBDII scanner.

unfortunately, it's not that easy with 5th gen maximas (years 2000-2003). You have to get the codes pulled with an OBD II scanner or something like uprev cipher or auto enginuity...

Autozone/advance auto is the best place to get your code pulled. They do it for free and there's no BS like there is at the dealer. I would eventually like to get an OBD II scanner, and actually my SES light came on last night, but went away today. Would have loved to know what the code was..

LA, the code should still be stored on your ECU. Even though the light is out, the code should still be there.

Yeah that's what I thought, but I went to 3 different autozones and two of them told me the OBD II readers weren't working, and another actually tried and theirs really wasn't working! haha. go me! so right now I'll just wait. I doubt it was anything serious as my car was (and still is) running just fine...probably just a bad o2 sensor reading or something
