This is my opinion and I may get blasted for it, but here goes.

I think that if you want to go internal on an engine, then go with the KA. It has just about all the advantages of the SR, but it's bigger. You can turbocharge it just as easily because you will probably be getting new pistons/rods for either engine. As far as drifting goes, the KA will provide you with more midrange torque.

I can back this up more, but my shift is over and I'm going home to sleep.

hey charlotte, im not familiar withe ka that much even thou its the stock engine, but what kind of horespower em i looking at with it before i have no choice but to go internal. Bascially what can I pull out of it with bolt ons, that is without blowing it since drifting is a bit hard on the engine. thx

You don't need all that stuff to drift. Are you trying to build Rome, over night?

The newest issue of Super Street goes through pretty much everything you have listed except for rims.

What do you need to drift? Um, time to practice and a place to do it. You don't need to drop 20 grand on a car just so it can drift. Do you even own a 240?

You could drift anything with RWD, just ask any SUV owner.

look guys first of all i just want some advice on how all these parts would performe together with some dyno tuning on a preety much finished car, since i like to plan things out. Second I see Charlotte up there talkin bout driftin with the KA. Is it even worth it for me to get the sr swap ?

Sorry to tell you that you dont need to buy a single thing on that list to learn to drift.. not trying to be rude AT ALL, all those parts are fine, but that is quite a pile of money.. Learning to drift only costs tires & gas.

ive found that its easier though if if have springs etc and strut bars, once i stiffened the chassis i felt more comfortable thati wouldnt die rolling the car

you know what, if you plan on drifting start off with a KA engine or stock SR20, believe me, starting off with all those power will make you a worst drifter since there is too much power. you have to be able to handle the drift first, even the good drifter don't use that much HP because too much power is no good in drifting. you should go for 300-350HP max. it's just my opinion of how to become a better drifter.

Um why are they a must? I know plenty of SR swaps with stock US brakes.

Dude from reading your posts I have come to this conclusion. You read every import magazine in print and you believe every word they tell you. SquirrelOnFire, how about you set yourself on fire?

Brakes aren't a must. They help, don't get me wrong, but they aren't a necessity. I personally have KVR pads and Power Slot rotors and love them.

As far as a "drift setup" I would get some chasis stiffening and decent suspension. Nothing expensive at first because you are gonna wear out your struts. Yes, struts do wear out. For a beginner setup on a budget like you are throwing out there, I would go with:

1) Make sure your car has LSD2) Front/Rear STB's3) Some spring/shock combo (The general consensus seems to be Eibach springs with KYB AGX)

You should definatly be able to do some entry level drifting with a setup like this because the car will be much more stable.

SWIFT_DRIFT, instead of lighting someone up that doesn't know what he's doing, why not try to help the guy out? I'm not directing this post directly at you, it's just that I notice alot of people on this board flaming those who don't know as much. Don't retaliate at me or anything because this is just an opinion of mine. You can do whatever you want and that's cool, but I personally think boards are to share knowledge with people who don't know (instead of flaming them).

I won't wish you self-immolation, but I will warn you about one aspect...getting the SR to pass NJ emissions won't be very easy without an EGR (if you go to the insp. stations). A big consideration if you're planning this to be a daily driver.

look i post here to get help and to get decent advice. not to get flamed.Dont take me wrong , I am very thankfull for anyones advice, but some people only show that they have forgot that they had to start somewhere as well when they flame out and blow u off. Oh and to talk bout drifting , I do have some experiance , not to much since I got to drift a coupple of times in a friends rx-7, unfortunately he didn't really let me have to much fun, since its his prised posesion and thats why i want to build a 240 drifter and im looking for help and NOT TO GET FLAMED .

OK, I said that I would back up my previous statement about the KA instead of SR, so here goes.... Keep in mind that the numbers I throw out there are all ballpark figures. If I'm a few off, then don't worry about it, but if I'm way off, I'd appreciate a correction.

First, for that kind of power (450HP) you are DEFINATLY going to need to go internal no matter which engine you use. With the SR, you can usually get around 300-340HP without going inside (not including a metal headgasket). With a KA you can go around 240HP without going internal. Arguably, once you go internal, the only varitable difference between the two (other than the direct ignition of the SR) is the displacement.

I've heard people say that the KA has an advantage over the SR because it has an iron block, but the SR block is so fortified that it is just as strong as the KA. Besides, I am willing to wager that other components will break before the block.

Because the KA is an under-square engine, it has a natural tendancy to be more of a torquey low-end engine. This is great for a "driving" car (as opposed to a drag car) but, as everyone knows, it suffers in the top end. Of course you can slap a turbo on it and port the engine. Then you would have a very decent powerband because you still retain some of that low end torque, but the upper end is increased greatly.

The SR on the other hand is an even-square engine. Meaning that it's a little more rev happy. Not as rev happy as an over-square engine like a honda, but compared to the KA it definatly has some high end.

The fact that you were talking about stroking the SR really made me chuckle because it almost completely eliminates the purpose for the SR. You are making it an under-square engine, like the KA, but it's still not as large as the KA.

I am about to install my SR in my RPS13 in about 2 weeks. I also plan on drifting, but I don't need anywhere near 450HP. I'm going to probably settle down around 275 because when you make alot of power, you break alot of stuff (unless you over-engineer everything and that's expinsive) and I need reliablity.

Questions, Comments, Gripes....... Hit me up

P.S. I haven't proofread this so there may be some type-o's......sorry

It's all in how you phrase and ask the question people. Posting thousands of dollars of mods and claiming HEY LOOK 450 HP FOR DRIFTING OMFG, all that shows me is wow you can price shop. Big deal.

If you phrased the question this way: Hey a friend let me practice a few drifts in his Rx7 and I really wanna start practicing and build a 240. What kind of basic mods do I need to accomplish this?

See that's an innocent question with realistic goals. 450hp in your first 240 is very expensive and hard to accomplish right away. Squirrel is your friends Rx7 running 450hp? I doubt it. Be realistic here dude. First you need a 240. Then you need practice. Enough said.

Haha, yeah, I was like 'What an idiot' when I read the thread but got to thinking I was the same way. I wanted an S14 with SR20DET swap and a whole list to the letter (including S15 headlights and ugly *** 3 spoke wheels) of stuff in this article in Super Street. I wanted every suspension mod out and wanted to make obscene power.

You live, you learn.

Most of the stuff on this list is COMPLETELY unnecessary, you mentioned the grounding kit was not needed, but this is probably the least of the unnecessary parts. You can do this all for MUCH cheaper. Let me rephrase, MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper.

If I was building a drift combo (you DO NOT need high horsepower) I would either go KA N/A with a JWT ECU, exhaust, PDM cams, intake and lightweight flywheel/pullies. This would be a pretty fun, reliable N/A car Maybe I would go 300ZX T3 turbo at about 6-7psi, possibly a little higher. LSD is almost a must, makes it alot more predictable, sway bars first (I recommend whiteline, I have them and love them) then either shocks/springs or if you want to stay cheap, bushings, strut bars etc.

This is my opinion, I think spending all that money to swap an illegal engine and then stroke it to 2.2 liters is just plain stupid. The stock engine is 2.4 liters and with the cash spent on the SR and stroker kit altogether you could be in the 10s. My turbo kit is almost together and I am spending ~$3400 MAX. That's JWT ECU, T3/T04E 57 trim, manifold, NEW FMIC (not a starion/NPR thing) external wastegate, 3" cat-back, test pipe and 50lb injectors. Granted all this stuff isn't new or anything, but it should put ~350whp down.

whoa guys, no need to flame him like that. since that's what he wants to do, let it be so. he will learn by experience. Just remember Squirrel, the money you spent doing that will go to waste if you crashes and damage the engine. I don't care who it is, every drifter who's bound to become good will at least crash once if not many times during practice or a showoff event. Only from mistake, you will become better.
