Come on fanboys. Someone wants to bite on this.
The 1.3 liter Wankel is more efficient then the SR. Why don't you have yourself a nice cry

lolz, who cares, $500 for a shell in that condition is still an awesome deal. Motors aren't hard to find and are plentiful, they are also pretty cheap. Ive found like 3 or 4 for under $400, so $900 for a mint FC S4 and a couple of days worth of work still sounds like a great deal. :yesnod

lol, if i buy a redtop front clip, what would have to do as far as wiring? can i just transfer everything over to my car or would i still have to do some splicing? JDM-online is not responding and they havent updated their inventory for a while now. They told me 2 weeks ago that they have S14 notchtops in stock but haven't updated their site. I just got back from Foreign engines in Lynnwood WA and they have a notchtop and a redtop front clip. Cool thing is the redtop comes with a s15 t28, a nardi wheel, guages (water, oil, boost) and HKS boost controller. The notchtop is bone stock with 82,000 km (49,000 miles) for $3100 (front clip, no panels, free delivery and this is after tax). The redtop has 125k km (70,000 miles) but the clip comes with all that aftermarket stuff. And they want $2300, both come with 90 day warranty. They even gave me a flashlight and let me open the oil cap to take a look under the valve cover, both engines were spotless, the redtop was even a little cleaner than the notchtop. I also got to see all this in person and the staff is super nice and really helpful. This is stupid, i finally have money but i cant find an engine :squint:

read the swap FAQ. If you are going S13 SR to S13 chassis, wiring specialties just came out with a pre-made harness. And honestly, coming from Yury, you can only expect the best.

they started the notchtop for me, sounded really good. They couldn't start the redtop because they couldn't find the key for the ignition. They told me to come back tomorrow and they will have it figured out and start it for me. As far as wiring goes, im gonna do it myself. I have too its part of the project requirement, i hoping to be able to swap most of it over and only have too extend the MAF and be done. It doesn't bother me if i have too do more, i actually got really good with understanding wiring. Plus i just bought a new soldering kit so i kinda wanna use it. But yeah i was really set on a notchtop but $3100 is a lot, a complete redtop swap can be done for that much. Also the coolest part of that whole trip was, they had a real s14 club K's sitting outside the shop. Its for sale, they want $10k, it has no title though and they told me "its for off road use only" it was still awesome. The lady at the front desk (super nice btw) said she has no idea how the owner managed to get it here without getting caught.

Ok so i bought a Redtop sr20det motor set minus transmission for $400, but it has what i think is a rod knock. The guy drove it 50 miles with this ticking noise and i actually heard it and saw it run. I personally have a feeling that it isn't rod knock and just something stupid, cause if it is than i just got the deal of a century. The sound is very similar to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68U-8-ry ... r_embedded

We had to pull the motor out of the guys car, i think we set a new record, 3.5 hrs and we had that thing pulled and sitting in the trailer lol.
And the motor also came with a manual boost controller and a Megan headers and down pipe. Also came with a Gready oil pan so it was an awesome deal.

I've seen motors pulled and installed in less than 2, but not bad... Either way, start with bleeding the lifters..

According to the guy he already did that and replaced the whole valve train. Either way im gonna put it on an engine stand today, and take a look at the rod and main bearings. Its the cheapest insurance u can get. Does anybody know the tolerances for the main and rod bearings? I'm gonna plastic gauge them.

Check the FSM (found in the FAQs) for the bearing ranges bc these motors have tight tolerances. Hope you didn't buy a dud.

I just installed a 255lph isis fuel pump and a new 02 sensor in the KA. With new pump the KA pulls very hard and is a lot faster. Also i found out i don't have any bearing problems and i just got the deal of a century, a running sr20det motor set, minus transmission, for $400. So im gonna do a full rebuild either way cause my budget was $2500 and ive only spent $400 and i have almost everything i need.

I can't believe the forum let you ask so many questions that can easily be found by searching.

I have read the bickering from SR biased people and V8 crate people (person), it is slightly entertaining to the point of being annoying. Why does it matter what this kid picks? If he puts it in himself, he is gonna get a big smile on his face when he steps on the gas peddle.

btw, glad you actually picked a motor.

Trust me i looked, math is my weakest area. So tolerances are extremely hard to figure out for me cause its so intimidating to me. I will be the first to admit that i was lazy and didn't look for some of my questions. But in the end it wasn't even a knock, turns out noisy lifters and a bad timing chain guide caused the noise. But i keep finding scuff marks on the weirdest parts, like #1's piston skirt, and the first cam journal on the exhaust side. Both have scuff and groove marks. Anyway, i also plan on building the KA after the SR is done, i was gonna rebuild it and put forged pistons and new seals, bearings ect... (im trying to buy another shell again, the first one's title was lost so i decided not to get it, i was gonna put the KA in that)

There is a back story...you missed it ;)

As far as asking so many question in one single thread goes...dude wake up...it's far more appreciated that it's all in one thread instead of 15 different ones.

When you're finished with your 10 million motor swaps and rebuilds, you're not going to want to tear this apart again, so why risk it. While you have it all apart, swap it out for new.

Here's a list of stuff I'd try to go ahead and put on order. While you're waiting for it to arrive and figuring what else you'll need, you can start cleaning.. If you don't like the brands I've chosen, feel free to change things.. You could always go OEM with things, but I've always believed that anytime you're doing something you might as well upgrade it.

thanks for list of stuff. But i never got ur opinion on the piston, i want to know what caused the damage so i can make the effort to fix the problem or prevent it from happening again. I dont really need the after market pistons, rods, or valve stem guides. But i was leaning toward the metal HG and now i think im gonna go through with that. I'm buying a lot of the stuff on that list, but from frsport.com. I'm gonna take the head and block today to have them hot tanked and a couple thousands taken off the top of both. Im looking to make a bit more power than stock, so i find it unnecessary to spend money on aftermarket pistons and rods. I also bought ACL race bearing for the rods and ACL race main bearings. OHH i almost forgot, when i pulled the intake manifold off yesterday, to my surprise the intake ports had been ported. As far as valves go, i do know how to use a valve grinder and i spent 4 months in auto class learning how to grind valves and valve seats so im gonna do my own 3 way valve job. But as far as the valves themselves go im just gonna clean them up and replace the stem seals with new ones (supertech) and im also thinking about rocker arm stoppers. I want a good motor that's well built and with good durable parts that makes close to 250hp. As far as turbo goes im gonna pick up a S15 t28 bb turbo on Tuesday. As far as the KA goes im not gonna start anything on that till December.

I honestly have no idea what would have done that to the piston. The point of the list I gave you is, like I said, so you don't have to do everything again. If nothing else, I would at least replace with oem pistons and rod. I would NOT put the same used ones back in there.
