What are the advantages of going with a 17" over a 16"? I checked tire prices and I didn't notice much of a price range.
OP, maybe I'm stupid and I missed where you said it... But what chassis is this for? Whether I recommend 17's versus 18's depends on know this...
If we're talking about the car in your sig, most ppl will recommend 17's because it is an increase over your stock 15 inch wheel diameter by two inches. If you icrease your wheel diameter, you must decrease your tire profile size to retain your original rolling diameter. A 40 profile size tire will allow you to do that and still be relatively comfortable to drive on. If you went up to an 18 inch wheel, you'd need a 35 profile tire and that starts to feel a bit harsh.
Also, 240's can fit a fair amount of wheel under it's fenders. This would be super agressive, but it is possible to fit 10 inch wide wheel under stock fenders up front and 11 inches wide in the back. So why settle for some rinky-dink pizza cutter thin wheel. A 9 inch wide wheel is a nice happy medium. And if you select an offset around +20 you should be able to fit it under stock fenders without any fender work as long as tou pick the right tire size.
For a 17x9+20 wheel, I'd recommend a 235/40/17 tire. But if you're cautious about fitment, you could stretch on a smaller tire, like a 225/40/17 just to make sure it would clear. But I'm certain 17x9+20 with 235/40/17 would not give you clearance problems at your current ride height. When you go lower, you might want a really simple newspaper fender roll or something.
The tire size selection for 16's is terrible versus the selection for 17's and 18's, BTW. Find a wheel that you like from the list I provided earlier and we'll give you more precise sizing recommendations. And maybe pics of other ppl running something similar...
