Possible reason for the PSN being down. Apparently, a moderator over at PSX-Scene.com has the answers...
chesh420 @ Reddit.com wrote:Ok, I've seen a bunch of speculation of why people think PSN is down, and I thought I should just post what the community knows in comparison to what Sony is telling everyone. The truth is, there was a new CFW (custom firmware) released known as Rebug (http://rebug.me). It essentially turns a retail console into a dev console (not fully, but gives you a lot of the same options that usually dev's only have access to). Anyway, this new CFW was quickly figured out to give CFW users access to the PSN network again via the dev networks. With a little manipulation of the URL's through a proxy server you could get your hacked console back online. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network. Now, before you go freaking out about the latest information posted about Kotaku, no ones personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available. Anyway, that's the real reason for the PSN downtime. Sony is now rebuilding all of it's PSN servers to be more secure and (hopefully) make sure the CFW users cannot get online anymore.

Edit #1: To those of you saying that this is speculation, you are correct. But, it is speculation based on a lot of facts and the outcome seems to make the most sense.
1. Rebug was released on 3/31/11.
2. First guides of how to use the dev network to get back on COD games on 4/3/11. 3. Word of "shady" sites finding a way to pirate PSN content via the dev networks on 4/7/11 (basing this on posts I had to delete on the website). 4. PSN goes down on 4/20/11

Now, you can believe Sony's PR team which has kept you completely in the dark, or you can see the list of events above and come to your own conclusion. Now, this isn't the first time Sony has fought back against the PS3 modders from getting on PSN. A couple of months ago we had a utility called f*ckPSN that changed the necessary header information that was being sent to Sony to allow modified consoles back online. We were able to use it for about a month. Then came the new TOS, the mass e-mail to PS3 customers, and software update 3.56 and 3.60. So, once again, yes this is all speculation, but it is speculation based on previous actions and known facts.
Edit #2: Mathieulh just mentioned that he has been in contact with someone that has official access to the SCE devnet servers and it was posted to them today that only 3.60+ debug firmwares will be allowed on the dev network anymore. All earlier versions will be cut. If you want to retain your access you need to contact Sony and upgrade to 3.60 debug firmware.

Piracy is undefendable, and if that report is accurate, I'm irritated. This just proves that Sony's reactionist attitude is justified, which is NOT what we want. Fear of piracy is why Sony treats paying customers like crap, and crap like this is why custom firmware has become suspect.

I'm not defending Sony's paranoid outlook toward customers OR hackers (who are NOT all pirates). But I am saying that pirating through CFW only adds fuel to Sony's fire.

I HATE pirates. HATE THEM.

Not only pirates, but while using the rebug firmware people were able to grab DLC and possibly recover people's CC#s.

No worries. As a early adopter to the PS3, this is the first issue I have seen. When Halo3 came out, XBL was down for 2 weeks. It will happen from time to time, no need to switch just because of the networks. There are plenty of other reasons to switch, don't let the network be it.
I am happy with everything else about my PS3. It just seems like there are constantly issues with the game play online. Even when it is working it seems I always get in laggy matches. I was just hoping maybe xbox live wouldn't be so bad about constant online issues. I wish they just wouldn't let you online if your connections sucked. I remember it being much better. Could just be I haven't been on it in so long. I also miss my halo.

Had PS3 since GTA came out, so a while now....

Never had those issues. Look at switching ISPs not consoles because we seem to be connecting fine.

Along the lines of what MOD was saying I was just bitching in the GT5 thread

What do they expect Sony's take away message will be?
They make a tremendous case for the legitimacy and positivity of home brew software with their ddos attacks.

I know exactly what you mean. During my CoD4 days I owned a copy for both PS3 and Xbox, during the first months of release I noticed that my PS3 would connect and always have connection problems etc. By the end of CoD4's product cycle (4 months before WaW) the issues stopped. The PSN became just as good as XBL. Even until now, the only difference between PSN and XBL is the content you get on the XBL (Major Nelson and IGN's Jessica Chobot) which I don't even use.

I know it isn't my isp. You never have host migration several times a day? Look at the connection bar and see the crappy signal of the one player who is jumping everywhere? At least it doesn't end the match as often as MWF2 did.

Like i said maybe xbox live suffers the same problems but I just dont' remember it that way. When MWF2 came out PSN was down for a long time as well. The PS3 is a better system by far in my opinion. But if I could get better online play with a 360 I would buy a slim and sit it next to the PS3. Anyone on here have both that can say whether one is better than the other connection wise?

Yeah but that isn't PSN.... That is the one guy's s*** isp and the coding of the particular game trying to deal with it.

PSN has absolutely nothing to do with that... I think even the games software dictates match making doesn't it? PSN just provides a list of games to join to, the actual game pics one out and handles the P2P connection during the match.

I'm stuck in 1998 and so I don't use my PS3 online.

I play single-player conventional stuff like MGS4, FFXIII, and Killzone campaign mode.

The Soulja Boy thing is funny though, I hope they destroy him.

Final verdiced about Sony being hacked.

Ben Kuchera @ Ars Technica wrote: Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get....

What did they get?
Here is the data that Sony is sure has been compromised if you have a PlayStation Network Account:
  • Your name
Your address (city, state, and zip)
    Country
    E-mail address
    Birthday
    PSN password and login name
Sony announced. While the company claims that there is "no evidence" that credit card information has been compromised, it won't rule out the possibility...
