Can you save money by building a diy turbo kit? Duh...of course you can, thats a no brainer.

Lets do this a different way, find me and equal length manifold, turbo, oil lines and downpipe that are all matched together...

The first person that uses a single part listed on EBAY gets his post deleted. I'm talking QUALITY pieces here. No SSAC manifolds, turbo's or heater hose with a worm clamp as a oil return line. I want to see parts that will be able to lay down big numbers time after time without a single crack or leak.

^ See quote below. Thats why you can make that statement.

Very well put.

While this may be the best, highest quality KA turbo kit ever produced, it misses the mark IMO. The manifold produced boost creep and low boost (below 20psi I think was the number)? Put a bigger more expensive WG on it. Offer it with the mythical AMS modified turbos complete with all new higher price.

Excellent kit for an attempt to break the turbo KA power record, but not for the average KA-T'er (or NICO guy from the setups Ive seen). Hey, dont most guys going for huge power have custom setups instead of buying an off the shelf kit?

u know whoever posted that breakdown needs to be shot lol. they aren't selling their kit based off of individual prices for each component of the kit. also try to realize that they do have to turn around some sort of profit. Also i hope that you didn't give them any ideas on how to price that mani. I pray that that mani isn't a g...........but anyways, i feel the price is steep but priced fairly seeing as how current market conditions are.

I'm honestly insulted by your comments. It misses your mark?

I guess we could have slapped some pipes together, not tested it and sent it to China to have it made for 20 dollars. Would that have made you happy?

I don't appreciate your skepticism on our manifold. We needed a bigger wastegate after exhausting all other plausible options for elimination boost creep.

If you want to do your own R&D and make a custom kit that works better, good luck. This setup isn't about 'HUGE POWER', but high efficiency.

I am sorry you feel that way...

I'm stunned that people feel the need to criticize the price of this kit. While I initially feel that the price might be a bit high, those feeling go away once I realize all the research and work that has been put into this.

I believe this is as solid of a start for an excellent, medium to high power turbo kit for the KA. Hopefully, in the future, AMS will sell the manifold/dp combo to those that already have a GT32/35.

KA owners should be greatful that AMS decided to dedicate time and money into the development of a great product. Who else is doing this?

Dont be offended. You missed the critical part of my post. I believe your setup to be superior in quality and reliability (if Ivan's car is the test bed).

But yes, it misses MY mark. I dont need a setup capable of hitting 8 sec 1/4 miles. I dont need to boost 30-40psi. And I dont need a turbo whose specs I dont know. (Yes, Ive asked for specs in nearly every thread youve mentioned the AMS GT's, and at this point I believe you simply refuse to give me that info.)

Hmmm, a $20 Chinese manifold? That would sell for about $100 here in the states. I know one like that and it sucks, so no it hasn't and won't make me happy.

To say it again simply...

I'm not bashing your kit so much as the failure to recognize the goals of your potential audience. For the sake of your sales, you need to convince guys with 350whp setups (like myRed above) that they need your kit. IMO they dont, til they wish to double their power.

AGAIN...

This is not meant for 800whp cars, although I am sure it will work well...

Did you look at the dyno charts? those are at 400whp, which happens to be my car.

Ivan's car has a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT setup on it. Ivan's car also does not run any A/C or power steering and is a divided T4 flange. That manifold is not in compairison with the one we are offering for production.

When you look at the focus, reliability and design of the kit, I don't think I need to convince anyone of anything. This kit is made for the best EFFICIENCY, once again, which can translate into the most horsepower at any boost level...

As far as the GT32 goes, apparently you have never seen this chart that i have posted:

I'm not trying to bust your chops here, I am just trying to spread the correct information in the thread about OUR turbo kit which WE designed. I think we did an excellent job reconizing the average 'GOAL' and designing a turbo kit around it. I think you have a different opinion of what the 'goal' of the turbo kit is, which is incorrect.

Most people who start out turbo'ing the KA motor run into a lot of problems. For a while there has been mixed reviews on so many KA-T specific products. In addition to that there have been so many horror stories and companies that have turned away from the KA. I remember when Boost-Designs was the KA-T sponsor here, they had a complete soup to nuts kit for like $3000 I think, but look at all the problems people had with BD. People had serious boost creep issues, issues with getting products, and then the owner screwed a bunch of people from what Ive heard. There has been so much SR support for so long and not enough KA-T. I think most people have put together there own kits instead of buying a complete one because there was never a good enough kit on the market for everyone to want. IAP came close, but even there kit isnt amazing. (I am having boost creep problems with their manifold right now). We are all greatful for the time and effort AMS has put into the research and results with the KA-T setup. The fact that we interact with the folks @ AMS almost constantly on this forum, is another great thing. AMS has developed the "best" KA turbo kit on the market. I say "best" becuase there really is no one single "best". Every person has different goals, different budgets, and diffrent reasons for their specific setup. For a lot of people the AMS kit is best for them, there are still going to be a bunch of other people who will never want to buy the AMS kit because it isnt for them. As for the price, yea its a bit expensive but there is nothing wrong with that. The best stuff on the market is supposed to be the most expensive.

I might not have a lot of posts here, but I feel like jumping in here.

Since I got my 240, about a year ago, I lurked here at NICO. Started learning everything I could about the different swaps and everything, and I decided for my application KA-T was the way to go.

AMS and IAP have the best lay-outs on their sites, making it easy for me to drool over what parts I want to drop into my car.

To boost my KA, I'm going to need to rebuild my engine. I jumped online and ordered AMS parts right away. The customer support they offer is by far the best online shopping experience I had. Any issue that they've had shipping to me or my friends they have called several times directly about things instead of wasting time with e-mails or that garbage.

I'm proud to say that as soon as I'm ready to boost my KA, AMS is getting my money. I have full faith in what they say, and if they say they have put all this time and effort into R&D, they deserve to get paid and turn a little profit for working hard for ALL OF US so we don't have to.

I just priced out my current set-up (with mistakes and everything) and compared it to a new set-up with the AMS kit replacing what I pieced together.

Price difference: < $130

Wish I could do it over again...

Thanks for the reply. I'm sending you an email with another question.

I think I'm having trouble with the whole efficiency vs power thing. I'll work on figuring that out. In the meantime, keep making great products. Hopefully, I'll learn their true value before I have to make a decision. Right now, I'm seeing a big price and thats clouding my budget oriented judgment. Either way, my rain doesnt belong on your parade.

myRed, I'm sending you an email too.

Well now. I didn't criticize the kit at all. READ.I wanted to know if it was worth it to go with a full tube over a log mani from jgstools.Compared to their Evo turbo kits, this is actually Alot cheaper. If I go with a pre fabbed kit, I'm positive this will be the one

Well, not that I have a car to put this on, if I were in teh market for another KA-T turbo, I'd love to see a full kit available. Especially backed by AMS's experience and workmanship. A Full T4 based version would be pretty sweet as well. Great job though guys. It totally gets my approval.

I have been planning on turbocharging my 92 240sx KA for a while. I read the thread about Ivan's engine and have set my mind tuning my KA. I am currently going to school for auto mechanics and would love to work on my car while I am learning the trade. I do plan on autocrossing my car and would like to know what setup you guys would recommend. I would be happy with 350hp max @ the crank. Do you think this turbo kit would be the right one for my plans? My motor and transmission do need rebuilt. I plan on getting the 240 fuel system from AMS. I am not sure what internals I should go with (i.e. just forged pistons with new rings and gaskets or a whole rebuild kit from AMS). How about the short block? I already bought a head off eBay with Crane cams and enjuku valve springs. As far as the turbo setup, I was thinking about a Garrett GT28RS and a recirculating BOV. I would like to keep the fact that my car is turbocharged hidden (not sure if that is possible). I thought about water/air intercoolers but everyone I know says those intercoolers are for cars with crazy amounts of power (like Ivan's). I also plan on doing as much of the work myself so I can really feel like it is my car. As like most college kids, my free-time is little and my finances are the same. Thanks for your input and lots of props for "Something Wicked" and the kit from AMS.

IMO air to air intercooler is the way to go regardless of the amount of power. Its size can be huge so pressure drop is minimal, and the heat exchange is more efficient. I think water to air should only be considered when there is no other option.

My supercharged integra is running custom water to air intecooler because the root blower is bolted right under the plenum/ intake manifold therefore leaves water/air as the only viable option.

Liquid-to-air can be a viable option for drag racers and dyno queens. Plumbing in a large reservoir and adding ice can really bring down temps. But I'd say less than 1% of KAT owners would really fit the mold here.

For your setup, you have a couple of ways to complete it. It is going to depend on your budget mostly.

If it were my car. I use our turbo kit with the GT32 or 50trim, build the motor, and throw and AEM on it, with our fuel system and the other necessary trimmings.

You can definitely get the power you a looking for on a rebuilt stock motor car. If I read your post correctly you say that you do need a rebuild though. Although it would be cheaper to replace the pieces inside your motor with stock parts, I would rather put in upgraded internals as long as the motor is out of the car.

Definitely stick to the air/air intercoolers for your application. The air/water setup is complicated and expensive and will not offer any benefits to you at your horsepower level for your intended use.

Thanks for the compliments, and let me know if you have any further questions. It will be better off if you would like to send me an email at [email protected]

The first 400 whp was at 20 lbs of boost peak and about 18.5 where it made the 400hp number.

chris,

I am currently having issues controlling boost with what I believe to be this manifold/downpipe setup.

its a t3 bottom mount manifold with a 44mm external v-band gate flange. it is paired up with a gt3071 with the .86hotside. With a target boost pressure of 18psi, and a hard 3rd gear pull, I am spiking towards 25psi and the tuner set a fuel cut at 20psi on the haltech ECU.

any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated. How is it possible that at 44mm external cant control boost pressure?
