so today at 25,800 miles my transmission failed on me completely. It is currently at the dealership. Is this a common thing to happen with these transmissions?

Dude the CVT transmission sucks AZZ. And Nissan knows it which is why they extended their warranty for the transmission. They have sent letters out to CVT owners with this notification, but I got the letter read it nd threw it away because it's BS. There have been other car companies that have used the CVT transmission and have dropped it within a couple of years oh so because they have so many problems with it. I'm talking higher end companies like Benz, BMW, Porsche and others. Nissan needs to fix this problem before they loose sales in Auto transmission's in the future.

I’m more shocked that after 430 posts, shortys408 has forgotten how to use the SEARCH feature of this forum, and was compelled to ask “Is this a common thing to happen with these transmissions?”

Actually, you are the first Altima owner that has ever reported a CVT problem.

Lucky you!

but I did use the search feature. I found posts of people having it replaced because of noise or lack of response but no one had the cvt fail to the point where the car was not driveable

other than the few that got replaced because of the clicking noise the only other one that I know of is blake's cvt, the only difference was he was running a turbo and from what I understand his failed because of cooling issues. I'm sure he will chime in and correct me if im wrong.

As far as i know yours is the first to fail completely for no reason. Do you remember hearing any strange sounds coming from the transmission a few weeks prior to it failing?

as far as using the search button, I wouldn't slam the op for not using it since this is not an overly talked about problem. now if it was a "which exhaust sounds better" or "post pics of your wheels" thread then it may be a diff. story.

lol really? You are more shocked that he didn't use the search feature than his transmission completely failing?

Using the Search function of this forum, I found these threads about the CVT.

CVT Problems returned 7 resultsCVT Slipping returned 3 results

I am more shocked that he didn’t use the Search function. After all, he has been a member of this forum since 9-29-2007, and he has made 431 posts.

I am not bashing him, but isn’t it common knowledge that the potential exists for CVT related problems?

for a long time i heard a faint rattle, nothing for me to be alarmed about since the car ran perfectly. Car was in the shop for 3 weeks for an electrical issue and the next day after I had it back I heard this same rattle i have heard for 5000 miles except much much louder. So I decided to drive to the dealership and have my mother follow me incase I didn't make it. On the way there I was able to drive fine at first, it was loud though. Than I stopped at a light. After the light turned green I hit the gas and it moved, but not much, couldnt really go above 40. The next light I stopped at after it went green the car did not move. I could hear the transmission whining when I hit the gas, but no movement. I shut the car, turned it back on, and it started moving very little , just enough so I could pull over into a parking lot and wait for a tow truck.

Take comfort that Nissan stands behind their products even to the point of extending their warranty to cover this.

It's admirable that Nissan extended the warranty - they did not have to do this.

I agree that is sucks to have a transmission go, but it's covered.

to Nissan

lol, they didn't really have a choice. they got their Math guys to calculate the possibilty of CVT failures vs EPIC lawsuit and they choose the thing that would cost the least amount of money lol

So you plan on having your life end in less than 8 years, and 107500 miles?

You do know that Nissan warrants the transmission for 10 years, from date of purchase, and 120000 miles, don't you?

Doesn't make me feel any better... My car is less than 2 years old and has 60K miles...which means that in about another 1.5 years, I will be out of warranty.

on the bright side...I have had no issues yet.

they should kill the warranty and stick a 6sp in the car if the customer allows it

Kinda off topic, but for all the CVT haters out there, the CVT transmission runs a faster 0-60 time than the manual transmission, which i thought was pretty cool, don't get me wrong i love driving 6spd i drive my brothers evo (i know its a five speed) from time to time. But yea it was pretty sweet of Nissan to extend the warranty. Now i'll be sure to go straight to the dealership if i ever hear a rattling noise coming from my transmission.

cvt runs faster than 6mT? damn why didn't I get a cvt!? that's because it doesn't run faster than a 6mt. the missing clutch pedal didn't help either

cvt has it's place, just not in a sports coupe.

but then again, so does fwd
