Ive got a 95 240SX with a redtop and Im running two aftermarket 10 inch fans, and for some reason I keep blowing or melting fuses, if I run a fifteen it blows every other day, and if I run a 20 it gets all bubbly and melts the casing but wont actualy pop the fuse, Ive checked the wiring again and again and the fans run fine when the fuse isnt blown. Has anyone ever experienced this befor. I need my fans.

something is grounding somewhere. It's somewhere after the fuse but something is for sure grounding.

Are you running the fans off of one relay? I'd switch it to a relay for each fan, Use whatever triggering mechanism you had to trigger the relays to turn the fans on.Obviously, you still want a fuse inline with the power to the fans. Try a 10amp for each fan, if it still has issues you might want to try 15.

This is an d thread that i brought up cause it was somewhat related, i'm running a taurus fan with like a 45 amp or higher relay. I believe the fuse held just fine, but the plastic casing around it melted.

Now how do i keep that case from melting and is the heat that caused the melting the bigger problem to begin with?

Do I get larger gauge wiring? Or use a different fuse (larger or smaller)? Thanks for the quick reply, hopefully the OP will check in with how he fixed it.

Thanks!

Yeah the heat is because it's drawing enough current it's getting REALLY hot, but with a 45 amp fuse/relay it's not popping.Too small of a wire gauge can cause things to start to bubble and heat up. I use 14 gauge for anything running 30 amps or less. 12 or 14 ought to be enough for the fans, just make sure you get a properly sized inline fuse connector to hook up to it.Not positive, but i though the taurus fans were only supposed to draw like 20 amps? So double check make sure it's not shorting, or wired wrong.

nah, taurus fans draw like 45 amps on startup, pretty rediculous, but it cools extremely well. I'll try running higher gauge wire from the battery to the fuse then to the relay and get a better relay holder and see what happens.

Thanks krazydriver

Holly old thread batman.

I fixed my problem, sort of.

I reran all my wiring with 10 gauge, and I switched to a 15 amp maxi fuse, it was fine for about a week, then one of the fan motors commit suicide. Im guessing that the fan motor itself had been failing for quite a while, I replaced it and everything has been fine since.

I would check the windings inside of the motor itself, 45 amps sounds like too much. Where did you get the fans from, junkyard? You may need new ones.

yeah i bought the taurus single fan on ebay, I reran the wiring with a bit stronger 10 gauge wiring, so i'm hoping that will hold out. I really like the fan, it has buttloads of airflow and with the koyo aluminium i really only need it in dead traffic on hot summer days.

if the fan has been running fine and then acts up, i would check the crimps for a loose wire, loose wire will melt a relay/connection quick.
