Finally getting time off to explore some mods for my M56s. As far as air filters are concerned what is a good one I can use that may add better breathing and a couple hp? Will it cause the cel to come on if replaced with aftermarket filters?

I am running K&Ns and the HPS intake tubes. Noticeable difference to me compared to stock.

I'd stay away from K&N's (or any oil based filter)...there have been numerous incidents over the years of people fouling their MAF's up with their oil. Nissan MAF's are expensive (and sensitive). I once destroyed a $250 MAF on my 99 Maxima running a K&N air filter. MAF Cleaner (a spray) did not help the issue much.

I myself use Purolator ones from my local auto parts store. I also have HPS intake tubes.

Do you have a stock number or link to the HPS intake tubes? I've heard that from several people regarding K&N filters.

Just search eBay for "infiniti m56 hps tube". There are a few colors available, so pick the one that strikes your fancy. Mine is black. Can be seen here (this was just a temporary install so I re-used the stock clamps, the tubes come with nice thick HPS ones that I am now using):

First time hearing of those. Went to Volant's site (volant.com) and they only list a unit for the QX56.

I think that site is fake and just looking for click traffic...AEM, Volant, and Injen DEFINITELY don't have intakes for our cars. AEM and Injen are very popular brands so if they had something guys here would already be running them. If you look at most of those companies, they have panel air filters...not CAI.

Would these work on a V6? or do they make them for the V6?

Likewise (dabble in web but I'm a server engineer). My personal red flag was the fact that it is phpbb.cc (phpbb, for those that don't know, is a forum software - might even be the one that NICO runs on)...and the cc...well...lol.

Haha all of us engineers. I'm a Systems Engineer myself. Yeah that site was a little weird and thats why I posted asking for feedback. I remember people saying there wasn't much available for our cars in aftermarket parts so that was interesting to see when I googled m56 intake.

Nothing else. That's the only 'performance' mod I have other than UpRev and removing the big air dam thing so the car is just how it is in the picture.

I'm assuming the air dam is the plastic shield that covered the air box?

Yes. See this thread (towards the middle/bottom of the first page): howto-replace-air-filters-m56-vk56vd-t594952.html

Yep, if you peruse the code of this very webpage, you'll notice several references to phpBB. Guess Nico DOESrun on phpBB! :)

I've used K&N all my life with no issues at all, you just need to make sure you don't over oil them. Currently have them in my Q70.

I've never oiled them. The ones that gave me issues were still 'new' and 'pre-oiled'...so either K&N over-oiled them.......or they are crap when it comes to MAF applications.

I do have a K&N filter on my bike, but that has no MAF to worry about.

K&N has never given me any trouble. Even after 3 cleanings/new oil application. I followed the instructions used K&N cleaning kit with spray oil. Let dry overnight till COMPLETELY dry, and their re oiled. Let them sit for 1-2 hours. Re installed and MAF is MAFing well and fine. Hopefully it stays like that. Maybe others have over oiled their filters or not dried enough before oiling?

Again, to reiterate, I had issues with my MAF using a K&N filter that was 'stock oiled' (out of the box from the store). Not oiled by me or ever cleaned by me. MAF failed on my 99 Maxima within 3-4k of using the K&N filter. Went back to regular paper based filter (Nissan OEM at the time) with a new to me (aka used eBay special) MAF and the car ran for another 80kmi without so much as a MAF voltage drop. There are many posts all around the internet on various Nissan/Infiniti pages (and even others like BMW, etc.) of K&N's taking out MAFs. This is not just one guys experience (mine). But hey, too each his own I suppose :gotme .

My recommendation...as someone who's owned 4 Nissans or Nissan products, all in a row, since late 2005 and have been on two MASSIVE forums as a result...stay away from K&N filters or ANY oil based filter on MAF based applications. That's not to say 100% of the cars will have an issue, but over the years enough have that it should make people question the product. I use their product on a non-MAF based application and it's fine there...the key is no MAF or sensor to get dirty.

FYI, I've had: 1997 Nissan Maxima GXE, 1999 Maxima SE (the one the MAF died on), 07 M35x and now my 11 M56x. I've been a moderator on NICO for a few years now and have been here since 2010. Prior to that I spent even more time on Maxima.org and wrote, just as I have here, many guides and information about the A32 Maxima.

To each his own, but I highly recommend people stop using K&N's based on my own personal experience and that of the other posts I've read. Remember, a TINY fraction of car owners frequent online car forums. 10-15 posts of something happening to me = enough evidence...but again, we can all agree to disagree I suppose.

I have over 100,000 miles of running oiled filters K&N and Airaid in Nissans and over 200K on MAF vehicles and never had a MAF failure. Keep in mind the factory Nissan filter is oiled paper as well.

Not an expert on this, but the ones I have ready to go feel damn dry. Like paper, don't seem to have any oil impregnation.

Aside from K&N, Purolator and Nissan, anyone has experience with Wix or Mann filters?

The PO (or more likely Carmax) installed junk after-market paper air filters that ALMOST fit, but not correctly. The paper filter didn't exactly cover the rectangular airbox hole without bending it slightly out of shape (too large). This allowed some air to bypass the filter. Can you say "grit"? Worse, the stupid filter's orange rubber rim edge was too bulky, so my plastic filter housing (ie, airbox) corner tab is badly cracked (broken) because the metal closing clip applied way too much pressure (to compress overly thick rubber).
Now I'll replace the entire airbox if the plastic tab entirely snaps off. Waste of money! (Grrr)

Lesson learned: Genuine Infiniti air filters fit perfectly, like a glove. They're cheaper in the long run.

Anybody heard anything else about that intake system for the M56 that R2C was making?
