1337 spe4k actually makes sense if u think about it, like if you were typing fast and mis hit a key? 3 and e are in very similar spots, but i dont know how u would explain A :). I think the term 1337 and its subsitution of letters for numbers and symbols was around way before counterstrike, probably started with Hackers (****ty movie...cough cough) as stocker said

It actually started way back before the internet boom of the mid 90's. I used to be on local BBS's (bulletin board systems) that you dialed into to chat, game(text based), message boards(the grandfather of what you're reading), or whatnot, which spawned this term. BBS's predated the internet, starting in the late 70's to early 80's. They were isolated from each other and the majority of them were hosted on home computers running special BBS software. The amount of users that could log on a system at a time were deteremined by the amount of phone lines(nodes) that the SysOP(system operator) decided to install. Having 4 nodes was a large BBS, and commercial BBS's that had early internet access had 8 to a few dozen at the most. Most of these either went out of business or turned into your local ISP, offering internet access only.

Elite people used to be hackers/pirates/phreakers/etc. You'd log on an "elite" bbs to download pirated software(or "warez"), hacking manuals, etc. These BBS's were of course illegal and easily tracked down because they had local dial in numbers(again b4 the internet boom), so only a few people knew about them, I guess thus spawning the word "elite".

In chat on most bbs's you had action words, like you type in lol, it says "so and so is laughing out loud"(which evolved into present day lol, rofl, brb, etc). I'm guessing people heard of these "elite" boards, wanted to be "elite", so they took the shortened acronyms, figured they take it one step further and spun it into something they thought was cool & exclusive, and came away with "l33t".
