Dear experts, I have a 1996 nissan altima gxe (automatic) that has been one the most reliable cars I have ever owned....until now. I purchased the car for in 2003 with 72,000 miles on it. Other than an inition coil failure last year, and the alternator I just had replaced last week, the car has not given me any problems in 32,000 miles. Now at aproximately 104,000 miles the transmission will not shift into overdrive. When I push the buttion the "O/D OFF" indicatior light does not come on. It seems as though there is a slight loss in power upon take off, but I am "soft-footed" with it since this button failed. When I reach 45-55 mph per hour the rpms begin to steadily rise, when the button is pushed their is no change in the steadlly rising rpms and no shift in the transmission. Also, the cruise control stopped working. The service engine light is on and following the directions for self diagnosis in the Haynes manual, the code retrieved was 0804(indicating a wiring harness falure, but I dont have the book on me). All of the fuses have been checked and checked again. We also tested many switches and relays and no sign of damage. When testing the solenoid under the gear shifter for the button, we didn't get the "audible click" we were supposed to hear. What's causing the o/d not to work? Where do I go from here? How would I test this wiring harness? Thank you so much for your time and advice.Amanda

welcome to NICO.detailed, articulate posts are most appreciated.also good when you mention recent service.did the O/D fial prior to the alternator?if not, then likely an electrical interface issue exacerbated by the stress on your electrical system related to the alternator.
