this may sound like a stupid question, and I know it's been asked before because I've already used the big red button at the top, which only lead to more confusion:

Is the 1995 240sx SE OBDI or II? does anyone have proof of their answer or know where I can look this up myself? I have searched on here, and some say obdI and some say obdII, and all say they know what their talking about.

which leads to another question:

will an obdI with the sr20 motor pass emissions? (stock turbo, 300zx fuel pump) who has tried this and passed/failed?

I want to get an s14, but I don't know if I should try to get the 97+ or the 95, I like the kouki style headlights, but if I will have less of a problem with emissions with the 95 sr20, then that's what I'll get. Thanks for the help guys :)

You have to look at the emissions labvel under the hood to be sure. I have heard both as well, so it's possible there may be some of each in 95. I do know Nissan used the 240 as a test model for the OBDII and as of 96 it was a federal requirement. As far as an SR, it is technically not street legal in any state. It may pass your state's emissions if there is no visual, or the person inspecting it doesn't notice it's not a US spec motor. The turbo is usually a give-away though. The SR should pass most chemical tests as long as all the smog equipment is in place. If your going to put an SR in, it will not matter what year your car is. Japan doesn't use OBDII.

If you want to put an SR in your car the best year because of emissions is genereally going to be 1995 and older. The reason being that in some states(and more are doing it every year) for a 96 and newer vehicle they actually plug into your ecu for the emissions check and the SR will not interface with the OBDII as it is not an OBDII system.

As far as 95 not being OBDII I don't think I have actually ever heard of anyone owning an OBDI 1995.

Never heard of that, and I'm in California. But it's a possibility. Either way, I just won't allow myself to rely on someone else's ignorance in hopes that they won't notice my mods. It's probably a good idea to check on this for your state though if you go SR.

I thought all 95+ 240s were OBD2 but this one guy around here that has a 98 240 said only the 97 and 98 are. He said something about 97/98 have a diffrent ecu and JWT is taking a while for them to modify his ecu.

ford, gm, toyota, and, nissan all started using obdII in 95 all other companys started using it in 96 because a new law forced them to do so. also if your worried about obdII inspection any code in the ecm will fail the car by north carolina law (other states may vary) and if you plan on trying to take the bulb out of the check engine light so they wont know then you will still fail because when the inspection is done they check the light with the key on engine off if the light fails to come on you fail. i dont know what the law is where yall are from but that the way it is here. good luck

Nismo: The guy who told you that only 97 and 98 were OBDII doesn't know what he is talking about. I am a little unsure of the exact date that the EPA began requiring all cars to be OBDII but I am pretty sure it is 1995 as I can't rember ever seeing a vehicle from that year with and OBDI ecu. I know it was certainly a law by 1996. Like I said, I have never met anyone who actually owned a 1995 vehicle that was OBDI.

I figured he didnt know what he was talking about but i didnt want to say anything. What do you think about what he told me about JWT and not being able to modify the ecu as quickly as other S14's ecu.

all 95's are OBD I, as far as 240sx's go...they didnt use the OBD II till 96, like you all said, it was a federal requirement, in illinois they do ecu tests to all OBD II cars instead of a emissions test by way of the exhaust...my buddy had to take his car in for emissions and his is a 95...so he had to do the exhaust test...no ecu test...

see what I mean? some of you guys have good points though. If the law was to go obdII in 1995, then most of the 95's should still be obdI because they had to make the cars and have them out on the lot already, right? they would already be selling the 95's before the law was passed. now, where can you look on the car to find out if it' s obdI or II? someone mentioned under the hood? has anyone checked their 95's to find out for sure?

Just because they don't do computer tests on 95's doesn't mean that they are not OBDII

Here is a link to a guy with an OBDII 1995 model year link

Also Daunt had a 1995 with OBDII

good point. so they do not test the 95's as obdI? meaning they do not plug into the ecu? if that's the case, it wouldn't really matter if it's obdII or not, right? and since emissions are stricter in Japan, the sr should pass in stock form, right?

Parts list(especially for aftermarket stuff) are not always right. I have read too many things saying that it is both OBDII and OBDI. Until someone comes on that actually owns an OBDI 1995, I will believe the two people on this board who have owned OBDII 1995's. Especially since both of them are very knowledgable on the subject.

MOST vehicles in the US began this in late 95 and all 96. I have ran into very few 95s that had it but after checking the production date they were some of the last produced for that year. But as far as the SR20 swap, to legally pass you need luck on your side. : )

I have a 95 240SX SE the prod. date is 07/94 so if they made an OBD1 mine would be. I will help you all clear this up if someone will tell me where to look to find out. I looked under the hood, but did not find anything. My email is [email protected] Just let me know exactly where to look and I will tell you.

It is beginning to look like they made a little of both. Unless those who told me that they had a 95 with OBDII were mistaken and had 96's.

I would really like to hear from Cloudone now and see if the fsms say anything about it.

Well Guys, flipped through the FSM's today and found that in the 95 FSM there is no info on OBD I, only info and diagnostics for OBD II, this doesn't mean that there wasn't OBD I, i talked to one of our head mechanic's and he said in California he is almost sure that all 95 240sx's are OBD II, while the other states kept OBD I. all 240sx he said changed later, posibly in 96. Well not much 100% proof there, but i tried guys.

Just my two cents...

It sounds like they made both. I asked the Mechanics at work (I work for a Nissan dealership) if they were I or II. He told me I, and the diag. computer was hella expensive. I went to look under the hood today for the sticker (blackbeltclub99, its a small ****e sticker on the top of your hood, also says engine liters. Its under something like emissions systems) but i forgot my hood was replaced, adn there was no sticker.

But, while i was installing my alarm today, found a sticker on the underside panel of the dash under the ignition that says its OBDII, and where its located. Found it. Looks like i have both. Dont know what my production date is, but im glad its gonna save me $$ on the diagnostic computer i pick up.

white is profanity? small w h i t e sticker...sheesh

it looks like it doesn't really matter, as the sr is illegal here anyway. even if they don't check, unless your engine is bone stock, and if you can afford the swap it probably won't be (I know mine won't :D ) you will still have to pay someone. so I guess it comes down to what you have money to get, and if money is no issue, which one you like better. thanks for the effort, fellas! :)

Hello, I own a 95 SE, and I have OBDI. It sucks because I called Greddy about there new kit and the reason its for 96+, is because of the OBD gig...The tech guy did tell me that all I have to do is have the Emanage reprogrammed and it would be though. Oh yea, I found out that I had OBDI by calling the Dealer and giving them my VIN. Fast, easy.

Don't know if this helps but the 95 maximas are all obd-II. the plugs in the 95 are in a different side of the steering column under the dash, I believe. Nick

im not really clear on how to check. what about the sticker on the hood? i checked mine and the closest thing on it was "exhaust gas control type" which had a few things listed such as EGR. how do you tell if its ODB-I or II?

FYI I have pulled OBD2 codes from my 95!!!!!!!!!!! Late model 95s had OBD2, im not sure where the cutoff is. This is fact otherwise I made up the code and it happened to be what was wrong with it, not to mention I made up a code that wasnt even available on OBD1.

I am 99% sure yours is not OBDII, however, there is a simple way to check. OBDII has many extra wires hanging around on you engine. Here's a picture of my engine bay: The circled area is where most of the extra wires are. I am not exactly an expert on this and you may just have extra wires hanging around, but this is the largest visual difference I noticed between my '96 and a OBDI '95 240sx (theronin's).
