well i guess im going to be looking into the chain guides. Where can i get the parts i need for this. i have found a few sites but most are on the expensive side. I will most likely be doing this on my own or with help from my mechanic. any suggestions how to do it?

Joe @ IOS has a complete kit that he can sell you that has everything you need. It's like around $500. There are complete write-ups with pictures that'll show you everything you need to do. I'm still scared to do it because I don't have any autmotive experience. My dad knows timing belts on older cars (80's Audis and such) but he took one look at the VH and said he couldn't help me.

And I don't have a torque wrench.

When I had called, Joes wasn't there. I spoke to a guy named Luis I think. He didn't seem "as" knowledgeable about the guide job parts so I didn't buy them. Ask for Joe and leave a call back number if he's not there. Mentioning NICO will be good too. (I forgot to do that)

A series of unfortunate events have stopped me from getting them done. At first it was funds. Now it's lack of time. I have the dollars, but not minutes now.

I take one step forward and two steps back with this damn car.

Have you determined that the guides have not been replaced? Maybe you should take the front of the engine apart before ordering the parts. If you find metal-backed guides on BOTH banks of the engine, they're done already. Some say ALL the engines may have metal-backed on one side anyway, so confirm both sides.

It's going to take more than a day. You have no experience with this engine (I don't think) so it's going to take a few days.

Unless you've got 250,000 miles or more on the thing don't even think about replacing the timing chain itself. It will stretch a bit over time, but will last the life of the engine (I don't think anybody here ever heard of one breaking without some traumatic outside influence - broken guides, and I even doubt that).

Absolutely DO replace the oil pump chain and sprockets.

Good luck,Glenn
