If your car has a knock sensor you can run 87-93 without any problems because the ignition timing is based on the readout the computer gets from the engine. My 98 can run on anything you put in it although with 87 I don't go WOT because the higher the RPM the more chance of detonation. Without a knock sensor any low RPM driving is fine on 87 but going up some hills or flooring it can cause detonation and possibly engine damage. The factory recommends 91 or better because Nissan engines in their RWD cars and many others have always been tuned to it. The 350z has the same sticker and any dealership will tell you that you can run anything. If you think you have a sports car, remember it can from the factory to fit 4, its a semi performance tuned coupe. Don't shoot the messanger
