also , u can cut the wire and just rewire it if ud like what u said is correct , me i just didnt want to , cut it so i basicly , spliced the wire and attached the other ( ripped the outer layer off in the middle of the , yellow wire/ red stripe , on the both the ecu and cluster harness , and connected the new wire , tryed it first! then tapped it , all worked well , compactfean said that u can cut it wich is also fine aswell i just felt i didnt need to since it worked with no probloms .

Look at pin 3. That's for the sr. straight from ecu to cluster. Try that. If it doesn't work then I'll sell you mine. The one I have you would have to install into your cluster with the 3 screws. Other then that nor wiring. It's just the stock dohc tach. Red line starts at like 6500 but it reads up to 8000.

honestly, If I can skip cutting wires and just switching the tach. Id do it.
So if youre ready to let that tach go. ill gladly take it off your hands.!

I take it you don't need that cluster? I sent you a pm. Anyways, I don't know how straight forward I can get. Orange/red wire on ecu (pin 3) to butt connector, butt connector to long wire, long wire to butt connector, butt connector to orange/red wire on back of the gauge cluster. (the only orange/red wire on the back of the gauge cluster.) technically pin 3 is supposed to go to that plug that goes up in the dash behind the globe box but when you start having wierd issues its best to run your own wire to eliminate any problems.

^ did just that. still not working (oh I never got your PM?)

i cut wire 3 on the ecu. (red/yellow)
and I cut the red yellow wire from the middle plug from the cluster.

any suggestions?

If your power and grounds are good, then the tach output signal from the ecu is fried and am not sure yet how to fix that with out replacing ecu. (I have fried this as well) so that would leave you with replacing the ecu our using the tach adapter with the sohc cluster.

Because the sohc tach is driven by the negative on the ignition coil like a standard autometer style tach, you need a standard signal. The dohc ecu they decided to go with a lower voltage digital signal and is why the sohc cluster will not work directly with the sr (coil over plug vs standard coil) but the autometer tach adapter 9117 takes the current flowing through the 12v + wire to the coils and converts it to a standard high voltage signal (which the dohc ecu doesn't use, lol)

The other wire you are not sure, is for some sort of diagnostic tach signal thing in another section of harness. Its not needed for this,.you have the right wire.

So, best bet would be running a wire from the cluster to the coil harness.
using a SOCH tach, correct?

No, you won't get a useable signal from any of the sr coils. Its cop ignition. You would need the adapter to use the sohc cluster.

Hook your multi meter up to the tach signal wire and rev the engine and see what your multi meter does. Because its a pulse type signal you should see all sorts of jumping all over the place on the read out.

Nothing more difficult with the tach for an sr, just different ecu pin.
