yeh so this started happening about a week ago and its getting worse. basically whats happening if i dont let the engine warm up for about ten min once i put it in drive ill make it ten feet come to a stop and the engine will just die! my message center sais battery voltge low. the engine will usually start back up right away sometimes it kinda hesitates on starting for a few seconds although the engine is cranking normally. the wierd thing is it almost only does it when im coming to a stop. I dont know mabye an ect sensor or something i have no clue where to start with this obd1 crap! i checked batt voltage at 12.8v charging at 14.2. please help any help is appreciated.

Thats the beauty of later cars with OBD2.....intermittant faults are easier to track down. When my 96Q started with symptoms like yours, I got a code for MAF....replaced MAF and problem went away,$450 part if purchased from Infiniti of Scottdsale, closer to $650-900 from your local Infiniti dealer.

You could buy a used one off e bay, but probobly a short term fix at best as it will be just as old and tired as the one that just failed on your car. After 12+ years of heat cycles and road vibration, the solder joints just give up and fail-intermittantly at first, then finally for good.

So what does the concept operating temperature mean to you?

Any maintenance history? Specifically the fuel and intake systems?

i dont know if u checked but definently check the air flow sensor...there is a plug that goes into it and sometimes it gets a short..i had problems with it and it stalled and hesitated alot..the funny part is i saw someone wit a 93 q and i never asked him why his was cuttin off like that but i found out

test: start the car and check the air flow socket if u give it a jiggle and if u stall u found ya problem....i use to have to give it a jiggle and it would work temporarly but after doin that with people in the car after a while that got old...and embarrasing .

All bets are off on an 19 year old car if you don't let it warm up to operating temperature before attempting to drive away.

A Consult test of IAC will probably show dirt, slime, and oily carbon in IAC and around TB plate and housing.

Do you mean what percentage the IAC is running at?

And if so it could also mean that is was turned up to rectify a symptom, IE: High Idle, And was never turned down.

The is no ZERO standard for IAC during warm up, the 10-15% IAC duty cycle is specific for a 174F coolant.

The usual problem is some incompetent owner or mechanic fiddling with the DO NOT TOUCH adjustments on the throttle body and hot wax idle warm up control.

Although it's ideal to let the car warm up to normal operating temperature - the car should function and drive... not that I'm saying Q45Tech is saying it shouldn't... but don't let the car's age discourage you from finding and fixing the problem.

I think everyone here is on the right track with the MAF.

We call "All Data" Some Data.

Do you have the FSM?

http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/Q45/

When did you last clean your IAC valve? EGR? TB? Plenum? Replace fuel pump? Fuel filter? Measure fuel pressure?

Presuming the PFRG were used, then all else remains to be done.

IAC, EGR and TB are not that difficult with the gaskets on hand, and a torque wrench. The plenum is a whole 'nother story, and a good time to do VC gaskets. Wonder if one has a leak? Any oil on any of the plug exteriors?

YOU DON'T NEED TO SHOUT!

Please disengage the Caps Lock key.

So, how about your fuel pump? Have you measured the pressure?

Could it just be that the AT is low on fluid?

WELL I PUT THE USED TRANSMISSION IN(FROM JAPAN CLAIMED TO ONLY HAVE 40K ON IT) AND THE STALLING PROBLEM WENT AWAY SO I GUESS IF YOU ONLY HAVE 1/2 GEARS YOUR Q45 WILL STALL AT IDLE?? ANYWAYS EVEYTHING IS GREAT EXCEPT I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM. IF I HIT IT WOT THE transmission WILL UPSHIFT SMOOTH ALL THE WAY UP TO 4TH THE PROBLEM IS AFTER I SHIFT FROM 2-3 AND LET OFF THE GAS IT WILL DOWNSHIFT BACK INTO 2 AND THE CAR WILL NOTICABLY FEEL LIKE ITS DRAGGING AND SLOW DOWN UNTIL I EVEN LIGHTLY PRESS THE GAS AGAIN AND IT WILL GO BACK INTO 3RD AND GO SMOOTH UP UNTIL 4TH AND ILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IN 3/4 AS IN 2/3. NOW THE TRANSMIOSSION WAS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN MINE ALTHOUGH THE CONNECTIONS ALL PLUGED RIGHT IN NO PROBLEMS. I ASUME ITS A NEWER MODEL TRANSMISSION ABOVE 90 OR IT WOULD BE THE SAME AS MINE MY MANF DATE IS 11/89. SO IS IT POSSIBLE I NEED THE NEWER MODEL (93+) TCU TO GET THE SHIFT TIMING RIGHT? ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED THANKS ALL YOU GUYS FOR YOUR HELP. (SORRY CAPS LOCK KEY IS BROKEN)

Well it could be a newer 1993+ transmission or maybe the throttle position sensor is off a little.

Can you confirm what year its from?

89-92 are all the same some 93*-96 are the same as well

*Some early 1993's have the 1992 transmission.

Did you run AT-CHECK?

Was the transmission installed correctly because a transmission isn't some thing that you decide in the morning "Hey my car is running/shifting crappy I think will change out the transmission."

Sorry but you have to plan it out just as with everything or almost everything in life because you need to get an *OEM re-manufactured Then you take it to a professional who know these car inside an out and installs it right.

*If you want it to last longer than a used

Any ways good luck.

No, the 1990-1993 all had the shorter 1st and 2nd gears.

Man if there was a way to see the numbers on on my transmission with out removing it I would prove your wrong I bet.

I mean I don't see a ton of difference, despite the fact that I need to do some maintenance but I am 99.999% sure I have a 1994 transmission because IOS has said my car calls for the later transmission.

You need to get the number off the top of the bell housing.

Personally, it macht nichts to me. You may not have have the original transmission.

You may have a 1994 transmission in your car if the original transmission was replaced while owned by one of the previous owners of your car, but I seriously, seriously doubt our car left the factory with a 1994 transmission installed in it......thats the problem with buying old cars that have had multiple previous owners, you never know what each one did to the car while they had it.

Yea I have not receipts form the previous owner not GloucesterQ45, But the woman who owned the car in Florida Her name which I will keep to my self of course.

And the service history explains nothing about the transmission besides the fluid exchanges.

I want to see though If I can some how get the code off the transmission with a little camera or something, But that's making a mountain out of a mole hill or going waaaaaaaaaay to far to prove a point.

That's true but wouldn't giving your VIN to Joe or any Infiniti dealer's parts dept. be able to tell you what transmission it calls for or came with?
