I did a search & found out Schtealin' used to make one, also looked for JDM stuff & pretty much found universal mufflers.

Does anyone know where to find a nice cat back, preferably stainless?

Or, has anyone removed just the rear muffler to make the car sound like a V8? How about changing the main mufflers to a nice free flowing (but not obnoxious) aftermarket units, leaving the rear muffler in place?

TIAJason

BRM is about 2 weeks away from having a system for the 1st-gen Q. Stainless or aluminized, true duals, with X-pipe, 2.5" mandrel-bent, with all factory mount points.

I'll be damned, Rex Birkmire! OK, that makes sense. I'm in Orlando, it took me a moment to realize who they were. I've met him, he came to my shop 4 years ago & we went for a spin in the Skyline. He's a good guy, when I first met him, he was wearing fake rotten teeth & a long hair black wig.

Too funny, I thought "There's no way *that* guy owns *that* car." (the silver Skyline).

(Insert Snoopy dance here) calling Rex on Monday..............(or whoever he has running the shop).

Any ideas on the costs?

Is there ANY HP to be gained?

HeavyD - you planning on leaving your Q nat. aspirated?

Q45tech has mentioned many times that even a very loud exhaust will only gain minimal benefits for the Q, as the stock setup is very high flowing...... Not much to be gained......

A real profesional set-up can run pretty free...

Also dont forget, who knows what kind of clogging has occured in a 14 year old car.

Thats true, i didnt really think about that......

Fred, do you know what kind of noise would be added if I took off the resonators (ones prior to the rear, final muffler)...... Id like to have a little more rumble, but I dont wanna spend a lot of money..... And that would be free, since my uncle is a welder!!!

Actually I am "running" BRM at this point (handling development of new systems, handling all ordering/shipping and customer service as well as advertising. Rex simply is too busy, and I'm very proud to be helping him out. (thanks Rex!)

Like I said, we'll have a Q system in the VERY near future, and it will be AFFORDABLE.

Wes, hold out for a bit - You don't want to hack out the mufflers. Trust me on that.

The very minimal low cost system is to just remove the rear muffler, weld in some short straight pipes . The front resonators are spaced and designed more for sound......they are straight thru with very minimal restriction.

Remember the Q has a small motor and thus even with 300HP that is not a lot of exhaust gases to flow out.........360-380 CFM input cannot magically grow in size and temperature corrected volume [exhaust output].

Real oem [as shipped] duals are already pretty large for the engine output. Not to say you could not gain 1-2% [maybe even 2.5%] at the expense of noise.

Had an extremely loud Stromung straight thru system from 1994-2000 [when it rusted out]..........it was good for 7-8 HP.

Man was I happy to find a free 1995 complete exhaust to replace it with, the change out cost me $40.........vs the $795 for the loud system plus $100 installation.

Haven't missed the 8 HP!

Did a series of zero to 80 mph runs [over the weekend] at [70F 1000'AMSL] the average of 4 runs was 10.7 seconds.............0.2 seconds worse than 7 years ago 70k vs 257k.............maybe the exhaust did help back then.

Noticed that the G35C 6speed does the same in 9.8 seconds [but has to shift at 85 mph][C&D 01/03] but they never give the temperature or altitude.

Hey SoCal, good question (n/a or not n/a) which leads me to the next Q-uestion..

AZHitman, didn't Rex have a Vortech on his car at some point after having the JWT 100 shot? (With 100 shot removed, I'm sure)

I can see the stock system is totally adequate from a flow standpoint, I just want a little more sound. My cats were pretty much done for, so I gutted them & ordered two Random Tech metal core hi flows to replace them. I'm sure there was little benefit to gutting, but while the trans was out, it was easy & I knew I wanted RT cats anyway.

ZERO difference in sound, fwiw & it's just temporary.

How long until you have pics/sound clips AZ?

Give me a couple weeks on it - I have to get over to the manufacturer's shop and inspect the jigs to make sure the system will get the "thumbs-up" from all my NICO brothers. It's gonna be a good-looking (and sounding) system. I'm going for the sound of a "Borla'ed Z06" if that's imagineable to everyone....

Rex's nitrous'ed Q now belongs to Fred (PalmerWMD). I believe he still has the original B.A.D. Q45 that was being supercharged, but I don't think it's in running condition for some reason.

Hey AZHitman, it's been two weeks.

:poke

Heh, heh, heh.

Replaced DS window motor / regulator Saturday.

I'm doing wheel bearings, brakes, struts, springs, tension rods, upper links today.

That only leaves the PS pump/lines, after that I'm going to be bugging you on a regular basis.

Heavy, I too, will be looking into an exhaust upgrade, for sound and looks only.

My goal, is to replace the "bathtub" resonator, with a couple of nice, understated, polised stainess round 4" mufflers, or a single dual in/out Magnnaflow, with a couple of polished 3" tips. There is a cool "dual" muffler I see on eBay, wiht a single inlet, and dual canisters, with dual tips. I have thought of cutting off the splitter, and using it for a dual in/out unit.

I don't want to mess with the cats, since I just replaced one, and the one I took out, was in great shape, but had a dent in the pipe, from an off-road experience.

The main resonators look like new, and the cross-over is still in great shape.

I am also trying not to spend too much money, on "bling-bling" upgrades, to save for normal maintenance and repairs.

Let's see what AZhitman has for us.

Thanks to a variety of leaks (I get a huge whiff when I open the drivers side door at idle), I have a free-flowing exhaust.

Fix those might be cheaper than you think.New gaskets may do it.

Or let it sit over weekend with mufflerputty wrap over the leaks.

Well worth it.

Or, there's stainless band clamps that look like about the size of an index card, made from a sheet of stainless, with holes on both ends and a special insert that when you wrap it around the pipe, it conforms exactly to the shape of the pipe & seals the leak totally.

Jeff & Heavy - Q45 development was interrupted by our introduction of the 350Z / G35 headers...

Jeff, the system that BRM has designed for the Q uses a single dual-in, dual-out rear muffler (albeit 30 lbs. lighter than the stocker...).

Give me a little more time and I'll get some pics out to you guys.

Ouch - who's poking me?

Sorry guys - I've been busy. I know it's no excuse, but between the job search, 3 kids, issues with my Q, going to school, and handling NICO and BRM I've been a bit preoccupied.

I PROMISE it's high on my priority list. :D

Yeah, AZ, well, considering the delay, and with Christmas coming, you should just remove your "t" rear spoiler & send it to me as a consolation prize.

:pface

No biggie, I think I'm just going to remove the rear muffler & see how it sounds for the time being. I just picked up a nice 5' stick of 60mm stainless that I might just leave natural & graft two pieces onto the muffler inlet stubs to see how it sounds.

Hey guys, I always go to a custom muffler shop for my project cars and I send my customers to him too.

When I did the Q, I was looking for better sound more than anything as the stock system was in good shape. If you ever heard that motor with open headers and no torque converter weight on the flywheel (trans removed), you will know what I mean. That stock motor sounds like a very serious SB.

I cut the pipes behind the first mufflers first to see if it would benefit from 2.5 from there back without the big rear muffler. It sounded terrible!! 'Still very quiet but with a bad backfire on the way back down and not deep at all.I then cut the pipe behind the 2nd cats and went with 2.5 back to Ultra Flow turbo mufflers and an X pipe where the stock H pipe was.I fired it up at this point and every guy in the shop came over to see what was in that thing. It sounded awsome!! Very, very deep rumble at idle and like an animal when put to the red line.We went from there back with 2.5 to moderate 3" SS tips.

Going down the highway it gets a little annoying in the back seat at 1.8-2k, but I like it.It was a little loud for the wife, but she got use to it.As far as increased performance, it seems to pull a little stronger near RL, but thats about it. There's no decrease in low-end torque going to the bigger pipe.

The whole bill was less than 300 bucks.

Kirk - Can you diagram what you did on yours?

Also, it sounds like you eliminated the rear silencer (the "bathtub" - am I right?

Aw, hell - just call me. I have a couple more questions. Shoot me an email for my #....

Kirk, let me see if I have this straight.

Factory pre cats, factory cats, custom 2 1/2" piping to x-pipe, then 2 ultra flow turbos, then 2.5" back to a couple of 3" tips.

So, you in essence went from 2 1/4" factory to 2 1/5", and eliminated the rear resonator.

I have been thinking of this type of modification, but wanted to put in 4 resonators, 2 at the factory muffler location and 2 where the factory resonator is, but stay with the factory H-pipe, and start the custom at the mufflers.

I do most of my driving at 2,400 RPM, and don't want the loud resonance. I just want to "scare the little girls" when I kick it in, and the RPM's get in the 3,500 to 6,500 range.

I don't want to sound like a Mustang GT, with Flowmasters.

That's right - I lost everything from the cats back then custom bent 2.5 from there all the way back with an H or X crossover pipe and the ultra flows.

The ultra- flo is a generic flowmaster, maybe a little quieter, so ya it does sound a lot like a new 4.6 stang. (bite yer tung, ma'an)If you dont want the 'volume' but you want the 'deep', I'd do the same thing but use something that's more muffler than flow.A good generic high flow 2.5 in/out muffler would be louder than stock and have a good sound.

Like I said, mine sounded like shlt and was pretty quiet cut off behind the stock mufflers. If you build from there, it's just going to get quieter, and it's not going to improve the sound. What if, when you're done, it's only slightly louder but it sounds like crap.It would be a real costly pain to change mufflers at that point.

The best thing to do would be to cut it off behind the cats.Build 2.5 and the X pipe from there to where the mufflers will start. Slide on differant 2.5 mufflers and fire it up, experimenting from quietest to loudest. Pick the one you want, keeping in mind it will get a little quieter and not as deep when piped to the bumper.

Kirk

Here's another thought. The intake is very muffled too on these things.Pull the left headlight and get gid of the plastic duct-work behind the bumper. It will get unrestricted, cool air, unlike some expensive under hood set-ups, and won't cost a dime. Then you'll have a growl from both ends of the car to scare the little girls.

While doing my driveshaft & struts, etc, the other day, I mic'd my stock exhaust, & with the exception of the crush/reduction bends, found the stock piping to be roughly 50mm (~2")

If I were to have a new system made, I wouldn't want to go more than 2.25" or 2.33 (60mm) stainless, of course, with a nice X pipe, mufflers in stock location & maybe a slightly rice-y can at the rear to finish it off. I'd paint the rear can black, though, leaving only the polished tip.

I personally believe any larger than 2.25"-2.33" would slow the velocity & cause a slight loss in bottom end torque, with a equally slight trade off gain of top end hp. With a nice mandrel bent system, I might even keep the twin 2" diameter, or opt for a single 3".

When you change piping diameter, the location of a balance tube, h pipe or even x pipe needs to be carefully located so as not to lose power.

A high pressure gas column travels through the X from one bank to the other side pipe, leaving a resulting low pressure area in the center of the X behind it to pull the next pulse out.

An H is more of a balance tube. If the gases are too cold on an X or H (too far away from the manifolds) I think they'll do little more than create turbulence & or a different tone.

(If an M.E. would like to chime in here to correct any misconceptions, feel free. I'm only relating my direct, albeit non-formally educated experience here.)

A friend of mine in South Florida has a mandrel bend machine (yes, a real one, $180k + fixtures). He has invited me down several times to do a system so I'll stop bugging the crap out of him about what to do with mine. I didn't want to cause any static with Rex & AZ's setup in the works, but I might take a trip down south to see what I can come up with. My stock system has a leak or two & it's starting to annoy me (although I'll miss the nice buzz I get while cruising). :bonghit

I just want enough tone for others to know it's a V8 without sounding like a Fox 5.0 or a dump truck, but I'm not willing to sacrifice power gains in the process, or make it look like Dad's hand-me-down-turned racer.

HeavyDuty,

I think many of us Q owners have the same desire for a more deep sounding tone with no loss of power. But few of us have the time, skills nor the knowledge to get it sounding right.

If you use the mandrel machine, we'll all be eager to learn what you learn. Then we can decide indepentantly which route to take in terms of cost, complexity, and desired effects.

I was hoping to use Dennis' suggestion of replacing the rear muffler with a just a straight pipe and adding a some kind of chrome tip. But does Broomstrikers experience rule that option out? Or is that still a viable option as he didn't hear his exhaust with a straigt pipe attached? Please clearify.

I'm eager to experience of the illusion of power without actually using it due a few too many tickets. So a V1 detector is next investment that will get priority. After that I'll be able to "scare little girls" with some peace of mind.

I'll be removing the duct work behind the left headlight tomorrow. Thanks Boomstriker. Isn't that the first and only, no-cost mod for the Q?

If you do remove the rear muffler and just run straight pipe be prepared for a very raspy sound, my car is equipped with to bullet style resonators in the stock muffler location and produces a some what deep tone, kinda Vette like, however once the hammer is dropped it produces a wild fluttering scream. kinda like a small block with a exhaust leak, I also ran 2 1/4 pipe from the stock muffs back, I am however going to be doing a whole system to get a lil nicer rumble out of the Q.

I think Boomstriker has the right idea & 1Qckser did what I was thinking about doing.

"Loooking down the barrels of a 45" was what I was going for, 1Qckser, and it looks great, but now I know from those guys experience that it won't net the desired result.

You know, we could do a do-it-yourself kit with mandrel bent pipes from where the cats terminate, the right side is a crush gasket, the left a slip-fit. (yuk)

But let's say we were to gather some real data based on displacement, max rpm, compression & decide what the optimum diameter should be, then, make "blank" pipes, cat back.

Then personal preference could be utilized with which muffler, rear resonator or not, etc. Simply have a muffler shop cut out the sections of pipe & install mufflers of one's choice.

My guy in So Fla reproduced a custom downpipe, as well as turbo intake, compressor outlet-intercooler, intercooler outlet-throttle body piping. We spent the time making them from mandrel bent sections sourced from him, and he made a jig to reproduce them.

Now I don't have to spend dozens of man hours reproducing the same kits over & over.
