Today I had my oil changed and new air filter.

The service tech noticed my inside air filter had not been changed in over 30K miles. So i agreed to change it, $90.00 part and labor

Does that filter even matter ? do others change their filters ?

Thanks

that doesnt surprise me for cost of changing the filter. there is another post on here somewhere on how to change it yourself and it looks like any ape with a phillips screwdriver could do it. I plan on changing mine very soon. How much was the cost of just the Filter without labour?

Lotsa people here do it themselves... it's not complicated!

I believe I paid around $35 at my dealer for the Cabin Filter and I changed it myself. My dealer gave me a 10% discount Infiniti card that I use for parts. Oil, Air and Cabin FiltersWhen you consider that labor rates are in the $100/hour range that is what you were charged. Automotive Technicians that have college degrees and understand how to use computer diagnostic equipment can earn over $100k per year. Automotive technicians that change oil filters and rotate tires do not earn that much but the customer pays the same labor rate.Bottom line! Learn to do routine maintenance yourself.

I'll change this filter when I notice reduced flow or bad odor from the ventilation system. Until then, I don't see any reason to change it out. Still seems fine at 50k miles.

Since it's not visible, I don't care what it looks like. As long as there is no smell and good flow, I don't see the point.

Hey Tick

The point is that the black crap that you see in the filter is what will end up in your lungs if the filter becomes clogged. I would think that your health is of prime importance? If you follow the instructions for changing the cabin filter it should not take you more than a 1/2 hour. When I purchased my filter at the dealer it came with detailed instructions also. This site is great for informing members on how to do simple routine maintenance themselves to save a little $$$

Better yet the dirt won't end up clogging the evaporator and causing a loss in AC performance and a build up of toxic [to some] fungus and smells.

I will know long before the filter becomes really clogged by either the smell, or slightly reduced flow. I highly doubt a filter that is still flowing strong is spewing out toxic fumes. No worries here.

Not worried about dirt getting past the filter. Filter actually work better when they are a bit dirty. I'll change it long before it get soo clogged that it causes any problems.

I cleaned it out at about 15k because I could not find a replacement or want to spend like 50 bucks. I used club soda which cleaned out all the dirt pretty good. You can buy a purolator replacement for like 10 bucks at an auto store. I did that about two weeks ago and replaced it myself took about 20 minutes tops...

It depends on where u live and drive your cars at. If you live some where that is really dusty and or drive by construction sites, your a/c filter can get really dirty. I've seen some that are putrid after 15k miles. It helps a lot if you have allergies also to change them as needed, it also helps keep the a/c system working properly and keeps that nasty mold odor out of your car.
