Sorry about your mishap, that truly does suck, and like TurboKA37 said, it can be unavoidable (to an extent). Seriously though, try to avoid at all costs driving at night in deer-infested areas, get brighter headlights/fog lights so that you can see their eyes on the sides of the road before they jump and just stop. That's what i do, if i see two shiny green peepers in the brush when i'm driving-- i slow down to 5mph and put on my hazards to alert anyone that may be coming up the road until the deer goes to the other side. But i tell you, there are moments when you can't avoid it and only luck is on your side at that point. I was driving on a backroad at night at 20mph or so, and a deer ran up from the brush on my right and ran along side my car for a few seconds then turned back into the brush where he came from-- that was a CLOSE call, because i couldn't see his eyes from the side of the car.
I don't nearly feel as bad as much for deer as i do for the natural predators that used to keep their numbers down that we killed off in colonial times (animals like cougars and wolves were commonplace throughout the US). It's nonsensical to lament on the deers' plight at this point, it makes more sense for our states to take the iniative and set up sanctuarys with deer-proof fences so that humans and deer don't have to meet but can live in the same general area. Such a simple thing, but the government doesn't want to spend money on (unless there are enough accident fatalities to justify it of course).
