I didn't get to hear too many stories before my grandfather passed away when I was 8 but he fought on the eastern front for the Red Army. he was a great man just as every other WWII vet I have ever met, without these brave men and women the world would not be what it is today. Thanks snwbrdr for this reminder.

There is an article in today's paper about a local veteran who recounted his memories. He was a first lieutenant in the US Army 17th anti-aircraft artillery Battalion. He is 94 years old. He remembers much of D-day as a dream but says that some parts are crystal clear.

Alarcon's battalion followed the 1st Infantry, which helped clear the way of obstacles for the half track...on the beach, gun shells falling around him, he remembered asking 'Arthur, what are you doing her?' But patriotism and seeing others fight around him kept him moving past his fears. He eventually made his way to the top of a 40-foot hill just pass the sandy beach. He looked back to the ocean and saw the black line of ships heading across the English Channel in support. 'that made me feel good.'

Thank you Arthur, for your service. :patriot:
