then the engine let go, it was because of the 990cc 5th injector not distributing fuel evenly and the #1 & #3 leaning out, and piston gone and rod bent...

lesson, get 4 big injectors of the same size, forget additional injectors..

Too much boost and not enough juice, sinks battle ships! Aaron's right about the additional injector crap. Let the toyota boys have fun with this method; CA18s are not forgiving. Big injectors all the way across........

Doesn't surprise me the hp figure, but not surprised with the piston incedent, It is just a matter of time befoRe this could happen, reliablility is always the question when you use stock internals with such hp.

that thing really kicked while it ran though. you would think he would have at least shot-peened the rods and stuff. and i agree with that extra injector thing, just get some real ones and he would have made that power all day long.

In actuality, the hp he was making didn't do that. The detonation did. If he had been managing the fuel properly, I seriously doubt that would have happened.

I mentioned that thread long ago, at least twice, regarding stock ca internalsI'd never go that extra injector route either. Bad enough you have slight variation in air getting to each cylinder, due to intake manifold design..... extra injector worsen the situation. Fuel doesn't like to turn corners, especially in boost. Bad for any motor.

other interesting points in that threadecu tuned. I'd only accept that in an environment where the tuner does it on a dyno... like secret services for instance. If u gonna push stock internals that hard, tuning window gets narrow.I wouldn't push em past 400 without water/alky injection. He uses stock injectors, which btw he tested at 336cc at the rated pressure. Not 370cc. Bad idea

Another sweed? guy posted a 12.2s 16G equipped ca18 in that thread, stock internals

No question the lil motor can run. Must feed it the "right" parts. Solid tuning mandatory. Better start with a fresh bottom end too, or those rod bearings will holla at ya

and he built the motor himself... i think it was a Jezz Horsham tunned ECU, Jezz got ALLOT of experience with the CA ecu's and i reccomend him as the "Jim Wolf of CA's"...

but it goes to show the CA can make decent power stock, but the cast pitons are brittle, this i have heard from everyone who ever made any kind of power on a stock CA.

if this motor had 720cc injectors all around it would have made more power and lasted,,, but for how long??? he made 2500 miles of "very hard driving" with the motor making 396whp, driving around all day at 23psi, thats all good in my books.. and if you read, he made 411whp on another run, but he span the wheels so they didnt count it.

Jez has mapped my car twice now and will be again when the Precision SC-61 and 720's go on.

He's just built himself a decent lump (rods/pistons/cams blah blah) he's mapped it with 650's, Z32 AFM and a GT30 at 1.5bar, We are all off RR'ing on Sunday so I'll let you know how we get on. :)

We are both determined to prove a point and get reasonably big power (~500) safely from the stock ECU with big injectors and the Zed (zee?) AFM.

http://www.horsham-developments.co.uk

His chips are mapped for 95-98.6 RON fuel though as that's what we have here.

damn you and your better gas. my SWAT ecu has a panic attack whenever i fill the car with premium...its probably tuned for high test in japan which i think is 100. it ran like a scalded cat when i treated it to 104 unleaded. was a lot of fun..

i might use an extra injector if i already had adequate fueling to begin with (kinda defeats the purpose of it then, eh?), but i would never trust all my fuelling to one large injector. if i was gonna keep the stock injectors i would have added an additional set of 370s in the manifold runners, so i got the proper amount of fuel.

Guys,

Just so we don't mislead some of our younger, less experienced CA18 owners or possible owners, the phrase "stock CA18DET ECU" doesn't mean exactly that. The ecu's motherboard is still stock, but she has been impregnated with a modified chip that allows the use of bigger injectors, better AFM, more agressive timing and ignition maps. So realistically, the ecu has been meticulously modified, but still lives in it's stock nissan casing and will allow you to use your stock nissan wiring.

On a upscale note, I think it's pretty cool that there's other folks pushing the envelope with their own ROM tuned ecu besides having to deal with only JWT.

Aaron, when are you going to the rollers and to the track? I can't wait till you report back! You should get some nice power on the rollers with your current turbo, but on the track...I can't really say that you'll be all that enthused. You'll just have to share.

I just woke from an all-nighter putting the new T3/T04E with new 60-1 front wheel, new front housing and .48 housing with stage III wheels to see how she runs this weekend. I'll fluctuate between 18-25psi of boost just to see if aftert 3 years this particular engine is just as worth as I say it is. It's an NHRA even, so I'm going to push a little bit more and hopefully I've worked the bugs out from my last outting. I hope all the big power hunters on here touch 500whp or even exceed as I wish no one to fail. No hate, I just want to see this engine stand out a little more. I'm looking at it from a business stand-point, so it is important that I also achieve my goals. I've set my goals at something in the 11s this Sunday, so keep your fingers Xed;) .

Yeah by stock ECU I mean chipped etc as you say.

There is a bit of doubt form certain UK tuners that the stock ECU/management can cope with such high power.Saying that a particularly well known UK tuner that you may have heard of said the Z32 AFM wouldn't work at all.

The fitting of standalone management isn't a big thing here though some have done it, if Jez can prove the worth of the stock management with either one of his own chips or buy mapping emanage etc then I see no real reason to go for standalone unless you get one with all the toys.

Thanks bro! And I'm grateful to have you in my corner as well. I don't think the engine is the issue, but more of conservative low end programming as well as transmission selection. I've taken out my trany with helical LSD and replaced it with my old phantom grip transmission. Don't know if that's wise, but those gears on that thing is long as I can shoot through the traps at over 110mph still in 3rd and creeping up on the red line, but not quite there.

Remember, all my cars were set-up to run on the highway and see ridiculous MPH speeds to run with the likes of your Z06/C5 vettes, supras, RX7s, etc, etc and I have successully done that with the transmission I'm currently using. And even though it's been in a nasty accident, the gears and diff survived and have since been fitted to a new transmission case and is back in business (I hope).

I'm going to activate my system's anti-lag function to further help with lauching on the 2-step. Should be a blast with all the national attention. The folks at Moroso loves the car because it's the only one like it running the way it does. Like the announcer said the last time "that little sentra can really fly, but he jkust can't get it off the line fast enough and with reaction times of 1.2 and a best of .690 as well as 60ft time best of 2.1 and worst 3.0, I have plenty of room for improvement.

Quote »but on the track...I can't really say that you'll be all that enthused. You'll just have to share.
well my engine builder who has a 7 sec drag car, 11 sec stock supra street car, and is a VERY competant driver and the most respected drag racer locally/regionally and had the 4g63 world record last year, and competed in IDRC etc last year seems to think that we'll break into the 11's with ~420whp in a 2600lbs car, that along with some big slicks, and with Nitrous we'll hit 10's..

i may not personally drive it into the 10's, he surely will, but my car/motor will get him there.

my friend with a S14 making 450whp and 520whp with N20 made a 11.2 sec pass locally without N20. and his car weighs about 250lbs more than mine and he is using a VLSD, i'm awaiting on the arrival of my NISMO LSD so i'll have better hook up off the line.

here is his vid - http://www.bezman.com/james003.mpg

i dont know what enthuses you but Boost_boy - i think i'll be VERY enthused by that....

i should be starting her up this weekend. and doint worry yours will be the first face i rub my numbers in.

Quote »The fitting of standalone management isn't a big thing here though some have done it, if Jez can prove the worth of the stock management with either one of his own chips or buy mapping emanage etc then I see no real reason to go for standalone unless you get one with all the toys.
There are 2 main reasons why I wanted to go standalone. One reason was I had become fed up with paying big money to a company over 3000miles from me to help blow-up my engines. With a standalone, I could just do it myself and have no one else to blame, but me. That's why I chose SDS! I've tuned SR20s with them as well as CA18s and next week I'm going to install and tune the one I sold to Sean's friend. He has an 86 MR2 with 4AGZE block and head, but turbocharged.

And the 2nd reason is cost. When you start playing around with piggybacks and blowing engines, it starts adding up. I didn't really have anyone who paved the way for the CA18 users in this country, so I felt it was time someone stepped-up to the plate. I think I am the 1st person in this country and Canada to put an SDS on a CA18DET powered vehicle; let alone it be a B12 sentra in which I know I am the only one. Ray (drumma022) is the 1st person to do it on a CA18DET powered S14 and he's also from florida and his car ran hard because I actually got a chance to tune on his car once.

Around here, everyone uses a haltech and uses a friend of mine to program them. I've seen engines pop that he's tuned on, but I am not saying whether it's hi fault or the driver's fault. That's why I decided to do something different from the rest of the crew and can happily say that all the cars I've tuned have never blown an engine!

I don't screw with N20! i need to see just how far this puppy can go on boost and tuning and fuel. My g/f's car is fully loaded with A/C and P/S as well as having a full interior. Not to mention that this not my built motor, if I get to where I'm aiming, I'll be sure and title the post with your screen name. okay, time to go start it up and see how she sounds. Haven't heard this car run in a month!

I think Mark (who drives the Titan Motorsports supra) ran sds on his ca18det years ago. I believe he took it to japan with him to do it too. He was the first us guy I recall with big power ca... somethin' like 440 to the wheels! This was waaayyy back. He hardly ever posted on freshalloy. I traded emailed with him a few times. Seem like he had a wealth of knowledge about these motors, and was a really cool guy. I believe at one time he worked for Racetech? fab shop, which mave have had some sds affiliation.

Mark is a really cool guy! He actually got me into wanting a CA way back when. I was actually going to buy his old CA out of his Silvia he brought home from Japan... but it was just a longblock and transmission (I realize now because he had an SDS powering it) and I needed a complete ready to run motorset at the time... silly me :pface
