"a place in Los Angeles that had very clean Japanese take out motors for $1600, and had them install one in my 92 and update the chain guides. The whole bill was about $3200 including new gaskets, plugs, belts. "

What a deal if they did everything required: water pump, plugs, knock sensors/harness, under plenum hoses, new coolant hoses, chain guides, plenum gaskets, front and rear main seals, new exhaust gaskets, all belts, any noisey pullies,...........about $1700 at retail in parts alone.

With 25 hours of swap labor.........that's $5050 or $4500 with parts at their discount.

Never could figure out how they did all you say on the motor as $1600 + $1200 [at cost parts] leaves only $400 labor or $1600 plus 25 hours at even $50/hr is $1250 and $350 parts.?

Many times [and we have seen a lot of them] the JDM motor just get swapped with out any changes.
