im getting a lsd out of an na 91 300zx and i know that you cant use the 240 open differential shafts or the 300zx ones. i need to know what cars output shafts will work for this conversion. ive searched and i saw that the j30 shafts will bolt up. is this for all years of the j30? also are there any other cars output shafts that will work? thanks.

J30's with lsd, isn't there a write up on this?

Look in the faq section.

late 95+ model j30's have 6-bolt output shafts.

early 95- model j30's have the 5-star shafts.

You can use the output shafts from the 95+ j30, or the axles from the 95- j30. Or you can get some output shafts from any 240sx with vlsd.

Shafts from a 240sx with abs or shafts from an s14 will work w/out changing the axles. Its the least work to make the swap.

Seriously? Even if they're from an open differential? That doesn't seem to make much sense.

NO NO! dont use an open diffs!! The internals won't match up! You have to get shafts from a 240sx that has ABS. Any 240 with abs has a lsd diff. THe shafts from it will fit in a 300z diff. Here, this helped me a hell of a lot.http://www.240sx.org/links/installs/lsd/lsd.htm

Crazycav: You're saying that the 95 and up J30's have the 2x3 bolt pattern?

IIRC, yes. The late model 95's and newer have the correct output shaft pattern.

I know you can't use open diff shafts, I was just playing dumb. I wanted to point out that NOT ALL 240's WITH ABS HAVE VLSD.

My s13 has abs, and it also has an open differential, thus I am putting in a vlsd. Perhaps most abs equipped s14's also have vlsd, but what you said isn't true for s13's.

NO its not, sorry that I didn't clear it up. The hicas ones did, but as you pointed out, no, not all of them did. Or else I would have one too : )

yeah, i was exited when i got my abs 89 s13. i was seriously let down when i found out the diff was open. you know who started the abs=lsd myth? i think it may have been scc. hard to fault them though they put out a lot of good stuff too.

No clue who started that. I was severly depressed when I realized it wasn't there either. Those Japanese fooling us and giving us hope that maybe, jsut maybe we had the lsd in out abs cars, but instead gave the canadians the good stuff.

so if i find a early 95 or older j30, the output shafts wont work but the axles will work? so would i just be able to bolt the axles from the j30 to the output shafts from the 300zx diff.?

Just to be on the safe side, I would order axles from a pre 1995 J30. Mine came out of a 94.

Correct. The output shaft/axle bolt pattern changed sometime in '95, and thus they have both bolt patterns. It's a lot easier to just change the output shafts though.

dont all the r200/r220 diffs have the same side gear internal diameter. meaning that all the outputs will swap. this is right? i remember that the internal parts of the big axles(300zx) and the little axles(240sx) are not interchangable.

While it may be easier to swap the output shafts, it is much more costly and no yards want to part with just the output shafts. If you have someone who will sell you cheap out put shafts please let me know as I would love to buy a couple of sets.

J30 axles are cheap and it only takes an extra 5 minutes to unbolt the wheel and unbolt the axle nut.

Yes. The difference is the rear covers between the s13 and s14 models. s13=4 bolt rear cover, s14 = 2 bolt. The shafts are the same.

Part numbers for output shafts: 38220-92L00, 38220-52F01

If only things were really that easy.

Why isn't it that easy? I did it. Since you are taking the rear end out already you just remove the pumpkin, then remove the axle nut and remove the axle. Oh yeah, you also have to take the tires off to get to the axle nut. Then reinstall axles and reinstall the new pumpkin.

I can't figure out any reason why it would take you more than 5 minutes to pull each axle once the pumpkin is out. Keep in mind, it only took me 2 minutes to do each one.

Well on many cars(like mine), the axles don't exactly slide right off. For me, it took quite a bit of work to remove the spline from the hub, and this was after soaking in wd-40. However, on other axles that I removed, they came off without too much difficulty.

I just want people who are thinking of attempting this to be ready for whatever comes their way.

If you come across very stubborn axles or stubborn bolts. Get yourself some good penetrating oil. Personally I like PB Blaster.

That is a good point about that some people may have problems with the axles rusting into the hub. If you have a good hand sledge though, you can usually bust them out fairly quickly. Just remember, when you are hitting things metal to metal stuff will splinter off. Therefore eye protgection is a must. I've only got partial feeling in my hand because of this.

that and you want to protect the threads on the joint.

Exactly... but if you remove the nut up until the edge of the threads, you can hammer on the bolt/nut and the stress will be distributed more evenly..

yeah, i have done that. i would caution against hitting it too hard even then. when i do it i use my large brass hammer because it does not damage the nut/shaft. if i were to use my mini-sledge($8 from sears) then there is a possibility that the shaft will mushroom inside the nut. i only know because i have done it so many times. when you get paid by the job, you work fast.

note: if you do damage the threads to the point where the nut wont go on and off but the threads are all still there you can fix. a thread file and a straight file will straighten the metal out but it takes forever.

I Just flew in and out of Newport News yesterday. I was up there buying some equipment for the plant.

If he is just removing the axles or replacing them, it doesn't really matter if it mushrooms them. So in his case, since he getting new axles, he can beat on them all he wants.
