Classy Chassis, Unleaded LoveBy A. O. SCOTT

Eli Reed/Universal StudiosCars equipped with drivers: Paul Walker in "2 Fast 2 Furious," a sequel directed by John Singleton.

READERS' OPINIONS"2 Fast 2 Furious," a new seatbelt-awareness film that opens nationwide today, features two very fine and touching performances, both of them by cars. Indeed, the movie, directed by John Singleton from a script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, can be seen as something of a love story, in which a pair of tricked-out Mitsubishis — a cute purple Spider convertible and a sinewy yellow Evolution — carry out a high-speed courtship as they dart and frolic along the highways of South Florida. Then, at what should be their moment of consummation, these two frisky vehicles are replaced by a pair of domestic hotrods (an orange Dodge and a blue Chevy), one of which crashes onto the deck of a yacht.

Unfortunately, all of these supremely expressive vehicles come equipped with drivers, principally a pair of crash-test dummies played by Paul Walker and Tyrese, whose low-gear dialogue makes the whine of engines sound like the highest poetry.

To make a dumb story short, the two of them, boyhood friends who have grown up to be an ex-cop (Mr. Walker) and an ex-con (Tyrese), go undercover to help a sexy customs agent (Eva Mendes) snare a drug kingpin (Cole Hauser). The kingpin is eager to hire street racers to ferry his ill-gotten gains from one place to another, perhaps because brightly painted flame-shooting cars traveling at double the speed limit are unlikely to attract the attention of law enforcement. He might have done better with Buick-driving retirees, or carrier pigeons, but that would have been a different movie.

This one is a sequel to "The Fast and The Furious," the success of which helped propel Vin Diesel to stardom. Mr. Diesel and Rob Cohen, who directed the first movie, have moved on to the "XXX" franchise, leaving their successors choking on fumes. "2 Fast 2 Furious" is among the most lethargic action movies I have ever seen: when Mr. Walker and Tyrese are not driving, it might as well be called "2 Slow 2 Tedious," since the script shows all the energy and sophistication of an old episode of TJ Hooker.

But even the racing and chasing, which is what really matters in a picture like this, is clumsy and lame, about as viscerally exciting as the masterworks of eight-millimeter instructional cinema I was forced to watch in driver ed class back in high school. The basic editing scheme suggests a how-to video on manual shifting techniques. Step 1: depress the clutch. Step 2: yank the gearshift. Step 3: grimace and shout in the ethnic slang idiom of your choice. Repeat as necessary until you crash into something or find it advisable to activate the nitrogen-powered booster rockets, now available from your dealer as part of the special doofus hotrod sport package.

Mr. Singleton, whose limitations as an action director were also on display in the remake of "Shaft," at least seems to respect the beauty of cars, and also — though respect may be precisely the wrong word — that of women. Ms. Mendes and Devon Aoki have some lines to say, and Ms. Aoki is even permitted to drive. But mostly the women, like the cars, are around to fuel adolescent male fantasies and are similarly ogled, at leeringly low angles, by the camera.

"2 Fast 2 Furious" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned) for some adult language, some violent scenes and a flagrant indifference to the basic principles of traffic safety.

2 FAST 2 FURIOUS

Directed by John Singleton; written by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, based on a story by Gary Scott Thompson; director of photography, Matthew F. Leonetti; edited by Bruce Cannon and Dallas Puett; music by David Arnold; production designer, Keith Brian Burns; produced by Neil H. Moritz; released by Universal Pictures. Running time: 100 minutes. This film is rated PG-13.

WITH: Paul Walker (Brian O'Connor), Tyrese (Roman Pearce), Eva Mendes (Monica Fuentes), Cole Hauser (Carter Verone), Chris (Ludacris) Bridges (Tej), James Remar (Agent Markham) and Devon Aoki (Suki).

The author doesn't like ricers, nor the apparently laughable script, plot, and movie in general....and is quite funny about expressing it. ;)

I haven't seen it yet, but I definitely must say it's gotta be a pretty decent movie if my friend, who drives a Chevelle and makes fun of ricers every chance he gets, thinks it's good.

From my personal favorite movie reviewer, Mr. Cranky (http://www.mrcranky.com):

I have sperm that are older-looking than Paul Walker. Fortunately for the Mitsubishi Motors Company, his youthful appearance does not impede him from buzzing around the streets of Miami in a souped-up Lancer like Nick Nolte during Happy Hour.Brian O'Connor (Walker) is fresh from the original, though minus his police badge, the L.A. location and any co-star with drawing power. He's also utterly unconcerned with keeping a low profile as he opens the film racing for cash. How an unemployed ex-cop manages to own and maintain a $100,000 vehicle, we have no idea, but it doesn't seem to stop any of the other hundred mechanics and fast food employees who join him, so maybe such questions are irrelevant.

Like most sequels, the film spits out copies like a Xerox machine after a lightning strike. Caught by the cops, O'Connor agrees to help the Feds catch a money-laundering baddie named Carter Verone (Cole Hauser) by impressing him with his driving skills. Brian's hip, urban friend Roman (Tyrese) joins in the fun, along with undercover cop Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes), who's so undercover that audiences will mistake her for pointless eye candy until one of the film's characters establishes her purpose with the following line: "She's deep undercover." Real deep, apparently.

What has happened to the career of John Singleton? One minute the guy is debuting with "Boyz N the Hood" and being hailed as the next Spike Lee, the next minute he's helming leftover sequels and amusing himself by making the street racer's use of nitrous look like Captain Picard going to warp on mescaline. If movies were cars, "2 Fast 2 Furious" would be a Yugo.

That's one of his less funny reviews. If you want a good laugh, read teh Urban Legends: Final Cut review. You'll piss your pants after the first paragraph.

your friend obviously likes the movie because they switch from the underperforming imports (no, really. Did anyone else read the review in I think it was sport compact where it said every single key vehicle was slower then their stock counter parts? Some by a large margin) to the "american muscle", which really isnt a yenko or hemi (also from previous said magazine). Not trying to diss your friend or anything, just the fact that he drives a Chevelle and hates on ricers seems to give it away :D

no its $9 for the night shows... and yeah.. like 5 bucks for matinee..

but here's the trick of the trade : (works best when going with a small group... 3- more people.. ). one person goes up and buys all the tickets.. get one adult.. and the rest children tickets.. then just put all the tickets togethter when handing them to the person checking them.. adult one on top.. i've never had anyone check all tickets, they just look at the top one.. yup., you just saved some money...

Partially correct. But all the movie did was glorify ricers. Altezzas. Neon. Carbon Fiber. Wings. That's what made everyone hate the movie. Its a big, two hour long advertisment for companies like APC.

The Matrix is fantasy. There's nothing wrong with fantasy. But when a movie starts promoting things people HATE, such as racisms, ricism (haha, I think I made a new word), and that stuff, then people will flame it.

I'm not saying you're WRONG for liking the movie. Everyone has their own tastes, as messed up as they may be. People buy Aztecs. People wear the most HIDEOUS clothing on the planet. Its all about taste and preference. That's fine you liked the movie.

But people did NOT flame it because it wasn't like real life. In fact is was more close to the real ricer/import scene than most expected.

ive got a better idea. two people buy tickets, both go in the movie theater, one stays in while the other comes out with the other persons ticket and hands it to you. you then walk in with a ticket. you just got in free. it works, ive done it before.

i havent seen it yet either, mainly because the movie theater has been packed with cars since it came out.

i saw it, its alrite... the skyline has neons and blue fire, purges nos about 10 times in the first scene, and then gets crashed over parking meters and curbs...a widebody M3 gets crashed into a highway dividing wall, and a new eclipse somehow keeps up with muscle cars and lancer EVOs while the top is down and wing is up....

I found it to be a very amuzing movie. the scene at the garage was very entertaining and a lot of the extra cars were really clean. it was very cliche but still amuzing. As far as the 2 hour advertisement thing goes i just dont see it. I mean yeah they used mitsubishi cars, and apc stickers, but what movies don't use product placement?

Do any of you really base your decision to see a movie on what the movie critics say? 9 time out of 10, if a critic says a movie was good, it put me to sleep.

put down the flame throwers this just in...

The movie was fun. I went to see it on opening night and it was a sold out show. Sure the plot was weak but it was great because EVERYONE screamed and hooted anytime police got screwed up. And everyone was rooting for Paul during the Skyline vs Supra race. This is definately NOT a rent-it movie... you WILL be disapointed. Go see it in a full theatre full of people who are into cars and it'll be fun. It is kinda like a dance club or a waterballon fight. If you enjoy it by your self you're an idiot but wilth 100 other people to laugh with it isn't nearly so tedious.

Yah the movie was weak but if you get the right crowd it is fun to watch. Skyline shoulda own3d the supra tho!

Hey where'd you hear it was a Hemi? I've read 3 reviews and they all said that neither one were the real deals. Just cuz you saw what "looked" like a hemi when they were under the hoods doesn't mean it was.The only thing that really bothered me about the movie was how every single import would be turbocharged, yet none of them had intercoolers or visible turbos, and the entire "warp speed" effect of the nitrous was way over exaggerated this time.

The best trick to getting into a movie is to buy a ticket for a movie and then once that one is done, just walk into another theater (preferably one that hasn't started yet.) This only works in places with multiple theaters (obviously) but it always works.

im tellin you, it really wasnt bad, wel atleast not to me ,and someone said they glorified WINGS. CARBON FIBER...etc..., personally , i htink a 'wing' gives cars character, sure most of them were WAAY to big, but ITS A MOVIE, thats the point, hell gone in 6o seconds had nitrous in a gt5oo, no one flamed that, it burnt a helicopter!!, and personally i LOVE carbon fiber, its a great weight saver, whats wrong with glorifying carbon fiber?
