MY little bro is looking at a 93 240sx fast back with a black notch top in it. I don't see a lot of people with this motor from what I have see. Is there a reson for this mostly red tops or old black tops. The cars got 125k on it with a fresh sr20det black notch top he wants $7000 for it. Any info would be good. thanks

most people get the s13 motors because a) they are cheaper and b) they have a greater power potential b/c of the high-port head design (the notchtops have a low-port design).

So would it be better to get a car with an red top/ black top? What is the diff with high and low port? is it design or size both?

If I had the option of an S13 or an S14 I would take the S14. They just run smoother. I have had both in my car.

put simply, the high-port design creates a less restrictive airflow. same size though (i think). anyway, if you are shooting for the dyno numbers where this attribute will become an important factor, you will be using aftermarket cams, in which case the s14's vvt (it's main advantage) is rendered useless.

15psi is max the turbo can handle, you'll be fine with stock injectors at 15psi

I am thinking of putting an s14 notch in my 1990 s13 with 70K original miles. The car is perfect never seen snow always garage kept. I like being different and original. Would it be worth it putting the s14 in or should i just go with the s13? $ isnt really a problem.

I would pick up that car if i were you. Any pics?

Money no issue...S14

It is more than likely going to have less mileage and it is just newer. According to a military buddy the s14's, in Okinawa anyways, were not as common as the s13's...this means your chances of getting a less than good motor increases because s13 were not as well taken care of. One of hte swaps that is common over there is the S14 motor for the s13 motor...I figure there is a reason for this also. You get a little better turbo, and the start up number should be around 240hp+(not at the wheels), assuming you add and exhaust and front mount during the install. I am considering this swap as my next one. I have had several blacktops cars, but I am interested in going with the s14 swap, but i have never been in a stock s14 sr car,

to the best of my knowledge, the reason they update to a newer motor is to avoid taxes. in Japan you are taxed by milage and emmision and stuff like that, but I could be wrong
