damn that was very informative. eventhough i drive an overheating ka, the problem is the same. crappy air flow design. i shimmed the hood and took off the rubber seal that lies on the cowl sandwiched between it and the hood this weekend and it didn't do anything. i'm making that panel today out of cardboard and i'm going to look for altima fans asap. i'll get the aluminum koyo when i have the money. thanks for making this thread.

LOL! that was done here in SA by my friend Brad and his friends (I wasnt there). It was really hot when they performed these tests. This should be stickied in the SR forums as well!

What is the point of a cooling cover, the hood fills that spot with and indention anyways.

it directs more air to the radiator instead of letting the air go right into the hood

I am so pissed, I spent the better half of the day trying to make that ghetto cover and found out the hodd would not close with it on. That indention at the top the S13 hood seals that gap when closed so all air is directed into the radiator. I felt up there and could not feel a gap anywhere above the radiator, hence I do see why this cover would help at all. I'll post pics of my troubles later.

EDIT: On second thought, this device would only be useful on an aftermarket hood without an indentation like stock.

i made the getto cooling panel yesterday. it did take some trimming cuz it didn't fit the first time. u have to make sure u cut out the holes so those round black rubber nobs can go through. the hood rests on those. also bringing the latch up a tiny bit made it easier for it to catch the hood since theres a thick *** piece of cardboard there. its just 3 bolts (12mm). those aftermarket ones must be very thin. next up is a set of altima fans. since i already have an elec. fan(with relay and crap so it turns on with ign.), all i have to do is disconnect the old one and connect to the new ones right?

This popped up in CA Specific and started a great convo over there. I plan on picking up a set of Alty fans and a rad panel from eBay.

You guys who made crappy ones: Do an eBay search...rad panels go for like $15-$30 on eBay all the time.

Cooling panels do work , very well I might add. My temp needle normally stays on that white dot in the middle of the gauge. After I installed a cooling panel from Signal Auto the temp needle stayed about 2 mm below the white dot. They work. Just watch the fitment around the flip up lights. Mine rubbed on the panel slightly.

thanks for the great read...

i was curious to know, i have an sr and running stock radiator... i can hear my fan clutch going out. i've tracked my car (road racing and gymkhana) and even long drives my car never over heats.

-should i get an electric fan like Flex-A-LIte 220 Electric Fan or Oem Altima Fan and continuing using my stock radiator?

or

-should i get aftermarket radiator plus electric fan?

my vote is for koyo brass/copper radiator and keep the mech fan. Copper is excellent at dispersing heat.

i just put in a set of alti fans. didn't go in as easily as some said. but its jammed between the frame rails. friggin fans almost took off my finger tips. but no more overheating. the fan on the battery side rubs sometimes. i might need to trim it.

because my fan makes a weird noise when i rev, plus i let the car run and shut off, fan continued to spin, also there's a lot of free play clockwise and counter clockwise... but that's my guess.

well the reason I ask is because when my fan clucth went out my fan was constantly on. When I would rev it the engine would sound like it does when it first starts up. U know the loud whrirring sound. Anyway the fan puts tremedous load on the engine. So after I noticed I was only getting 180 miles per tank , I noticed the fan noise. Upon inspection with the engine off the fan was immovable , no free spin at all. That is a broken fan clutch. Free spin is good , as long as your KA is not overheating. That weird noise might be your timing chain tensioners (rolling rocks in a bucket). So I went to the junk yard , found one with very smooth free spin ( when the engine gets hot the fan clucth "locks up" hence the clutch part , so if it locks up when it is cold , its broken) for $25 bucks. Pls bear in mind that thing is a beehive to get on and off so don't mis- DG. Good luck.
