Is there a way to quiet down the valves when first starting at cold idle?

are you sure its the valves???? i dont know if u would be able to tell the difference but valves make a TICK sound and the timing chain in the front make a TINK sound.... see the difference.... TICK <----> TINK.... i guess the tink sounds more like someone tapping on a pipe w/ a hammer.... anyways if its a TINK instead of a TICK it would be most likely an old timing chain or if ur lucky one of the tensioners is worn out.... just a few ideas

definitely worth it to distinguish between chain tick and valve tap.

seafoam treatment works well for cleaning out the valves see if it quiets em down.

i had some valve tap on a ka and it cured it 1-2-3

Hey, see you are online, do 1996 240sx's have adjustable valves, lifters? I just bought one with 3300 miles on it, and it makes a ticking sound

The valve lash on the KA24DE can be adjusted by adding, removing, or changing the size of the shims on top of the lifters. The procedure is detailed in the FSM.
