My nephew has a 96 240SX. It either came stock with or a previous owner installed a VLSD differential. From what I've researched already it's the same differential that came stock in early Infiniti J30s with a 5 bolt star pattern on the axle flange. Finding new or even used drive axles has been a problem. I've found some high dollar ones but none in his price range. Does anyone have a source or options they'd like to share? Are the axle flanges from an open differential and a VLSD interchangeable? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Cadaverdog, thanks for making a thread. I'm surprised someone hasn't chimed in with some experience. So, I've done a little research on the issue in an attempt to help out. I don't have personal experience exactly. I do have an S14 and I have swapped out my differential internals and the output shafts, so I have run into the variety of output shaft lengths, splines and flange patterns. It seems like you could take the internals from the J30 LSD and put them into the current pumpkin with the current 240sx output flanges and axles. Alternatively, it seems like you could use the J30 pumpkin, but would need the 240sx ABS driveshaft, the 240sx rear cover (I think, might just be for S13) and J30 axles (due to a different length). I'd try to swap internals I think.

I saw a video of someone doing a xterra internals swap to achieve a different final drive. Might be possible, but i'm not sure.
