Considering that my father had bachelors and masters degrees in engineering, more than 40 years of aviation and automotive engineering work experience and was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, I would say that he knew exactly what he was doing. There's no one in this thread with such a resume so I'll leave it at that.
Now why on earth would you think anyone was casting aspersions at your dad? Dunno how old you are, but 30 years ago stuck throttles were common. You could get a typical Chevy to do it just from a bad motor mount, the engine would torque-lift and the linkage would jam. It doesn't happen on anything modern because there are no more cables and linkages. @Tombo seemed to be under the impression that there was no reason for killing a key, and that isn't true.

So please, don't make this into another idiot back-and-forth about how much your dad knew. I'm sure he knew a lot, and if he killed the key, I'm sure he had a reason. Nothing in anything I said was aimed at him, so unlight your touchy fuse and chill the hell out.
Your own words made it pretty clear that you were casting such aspersions as in he didn't know what he was doing. He did it to avoid what likely would've been a fatal accident. He had the expertise to know exactly what to do. This is all I'm going to say about this. It's time to move on.

I gave you a polite "out", sorry if you didn't take it. @Tombo was exactly right under the circumstances you described, the only possible reason to kill the key "when a car pulled out in front" is if your dad hit the gas instead of the brake and didn't realize it. I respect your dad, even great people make mistakes. You, sir, are a pompous a$$.

My apologies to the forum for the preceding post, breaking my own rules about pejoratives. However, sometimes there is no good recourse but to call a tail a tail, a leg a leg, and a jacka$$ a jacka$$.

But but his dad who shall remain unnamed and not present is an automotive engineer. Surely some of that knowledge was passed down during conception and he didn't misinterpret any of what he learned from his uber smart daddy when he was sitting there watching...

That says it all.

Have I mentioned that I can say, "No further comment," in 27 languages?

Once again your words are insulting and show that you have no clue to what you're talking about because you weren't there during the incident. Your own words show you to be the pompous a$$. I don't what part of "move on" you don't understand?

You weren't there so you have no idea other than to use name calling and insults. Your comments are offensive and pathetic. I don't know what you don't understand either about "move on".

I don't know who makes you think you can give people orders. I feel sorry for your dad. It sounds like he tried to raise a good kid, but somehow ended up with a pompous jacka$$. You do him no honor whatsoever by spouting impossibilities and expecting people to accept them as facts.

It's amazing that someone who was not a witness to an incident thinks they know all about it. You don't and never will. On top of that your lack of respect for engineering expertise that you don't have and never will have is offensive. I don't know what part of "move on" you don't understand?

Your continued personal attacks, name calling and lack of respect for engineering expertise that you will never have, further showcases the weakness of your position. Again, what part of "move on" don't you understand?

What part of, "Your original statement about the reason for turning off the key is impossible nonsense," don't you understand?

I suggest you take the nonsense somewhere else. You seem to be missing a lot of clothing, Your Majesty, and no one here is going to pretend they can't see the obvious.

My father knows a lot about some things that I do not. I know a lot about some things that my father does not. I'm willing to bet that it is the same for every human that doesn't just work for a family business and nothing else. The point I'm trying to once again get to is that just because your dad was an automotive engineer, doesn't mean he knows anything about any 2023 model vehicle and their electronics. Just because your dad was an automotive engineer doesn't mean you know anything about any car ever other than typical maintenance that he showed you how to do. Congratulations. You know what I knew at 14 when I was the fleet mechanic for an electrical contractor maintaining 35 trucks, 3 trenchers, a ladder truck, a bucket truck, and a whole slew of electrical machinery every summer until I graduated high school and then I was the mechanic for 6 years while also being an electrical apprentice. I've forgotten more about cars than you know. I can safely make that assumption based on every one of your comments on here either being the equivalent of stroking your daddy's ego or the equivalent of tucking tail and trying to get everyone to leave you alone. Just stop, dude.

For the new or inexperienced drivers out there reading this thread:
Please don’t EVER turn off your key or your push button ignition while your vehicle is in motion. You will likely lock the steering column and lose all power steering/ any steering, likely lose your power brakes or any braking ability and not be able to possibly accelerate around or out of the way of an obstacle. I am confident that Nissan or any Drivers instructor would agree, DO NOT turn off your ignition in a moving vehicle, PLEASE DO NOT. If your throttle sticks put the vehicle in neutral, better to blow the engine but still have brakes and steering capability. BE SAFE.

Yes, but one caveat. I mentioned above that one of the two common causes of unintended acceleration is floor mats getting bunched or folded next to the gas pedal. In fact, the '12~'15 Versas actually had a recall for that. It called for us to shorten a piece of plastic under the dash that could trap a mat the wrong way. Here's a link for the curious:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/ ... 3-9999.pdf

So there is one (and only one) reason to ever kill the key. That's if you step on the gas, let off, and the car keeps going. If you accidentally hit the wrong pedal, the engine will rev down when you lift your foot. If the pedal is stuck, it won't. In that one, unique circumstance, the key will save your life.

And when you get it to stop, put your driver's floor mat on the mat hooks where it belongs.
;)

VStar, yet another great tip for the inexperienced (and some experienced) drivers out there. The racing schools I’ve been to tell us for a stuck throttle to just push in the clutch and let the engine bounce off the rev limiter, I can think of a couple of race car drivers that died from a stuck throttle, NASCAR added a kill switch to the steering wheel, scary when it happens.

That takes me back to another funny short story about a customer complaint. Repair order reads, C/S CAR JUST WON'T ACCELERATE LIKE IT USED TO AT FULL THROTTLE

You get three guesses why, and the last two are wrong. Floor mats can get under the pedal, too.

Claiming to know the facts of an incident that you never personally witnessed is not posting facts. You also claim that automotive mechanics know more than automotive engineers, that's also not a fact. Automotive mechanics will never know more than the automotive engineers. Your comments have been insulting and offensive. You still don't understand "move on".

Made an account just to say how grateful I am for this thread - it has been so helpful (and I've enjoyed the drama of the last few pages). I've managed to program a key fob to my '23 Versa S and it works perfectly.

I noticed that everyone here has been posting about manual Versas - I want to confirm that these steps should also work for the CVT automatic transmission, which is the model that I own. It also seems like everyone on this thread went and got the 28268-5EA1A fob. I bought the H0561-5EF0C fob because they were doing a good deal on it at one of my local dealerships (250 after tax), and I was too lazy to go through the hassle of jury-rigging a separate key to the keyless fob :chuckle: . Remember to check different dealerships on the Nissan website! The dealership I visited was not the closest one to me. I can confirm that the H0561-5EF0C fob can also be programmed to the '23 Versa S.

Initially the dealer told me that they could program the key for me. After I waited 30 minutes, they told me that "the Versa S does not have a fob." I showed them this thread, and they said "well, we only do things we can guarantee, and since this isn't an official Nissan thread, we can't do this for you." Dealer also added that "if you walk off the premises with this key, we won't issue you a refund."

"Screw it, in VStar and vic831 I trust," I thought. Walked away with the H0561-5EF0C fob and very aware that I was taking a $250 dollar gamble. The dealership mechanic offered to cut my key for free, so I did that. I also cheekily told him that I'd give him a ring if I was able to get it programmed.

Went on a wild goose chase around my area. Called up a few locksmiths who said they couldn't program it for me. Finally found someone who would; he asked me to bring my car in. I don't know if this is a detail worth mentioning, but the locksmith was quite relieved that I showed him an official Nissan fob - he didn't elaborate, just said "good" when I showed him the key. Was in and out of there in like 3 minutes tops. The trunk button doesn't work, but the alarm will go off if I press the corresponding button.

So, that's my experience with getting a fob programmed. Huge thanks again to vic831 and VStar - the amount of effort that went into researching and problem solving here is really commendable. Just wanted to share my story cuz there were a lot of moments where I thought I was doing the wrong thing, but this thread was really wonderful and helped me get what I wanted.

Yes, the drama. Good for you for sticking it out, in spite of the ineptness of the stealership. Thanks for the feedback on the fob you used, I figured it would work.

The trunk popper was sadly eliminated in '23 and I think that’s the real reason the fob was discontinued, Nissan didn’t want new owners taking their cars in complaining “the trunk popper is broken” VStar and I are pretty sure you can add the popper if one is dead set on it, but I didn’t try.

Good luck and thank you for acknowledging this thread, I’m glad to give back as these forums have helped me so much. I said in my first post that I was going to figure this out and VStar650 (the best) gave me a glimmer of confidence that the BCM could accept it, but it was dumb luck that I discovered that the programming had changed and luckily I had a key in the fob I made up (or dummy key) to turn the ignition during programming, COZ my first locksmith. Post programming was not chatty (actually became a jerk) with info and questions I asked, and wasn’t interested in “helping the forum” 2nd car/locksmith was quite helpful. I drove the relatives 5MT aggressively today, great little car!!!

Tried the locksmith nearest work on the way home today and they tried programming my new fob. The only option that comes up for 20-22 versa on their programmer is the push button start models. Looks like I get to try another one on Tuesday when I'm off again.

Sort of on topic, just an FYI as I’ve was given access to borrow a laptop with consult 3 and the OBD reader, you can change the door locks to unlock all instead of just the drivers side when you shut the engine off (mode 1, S models were set from the factory to mode 2) under diagnostics all, door locks, set unlock, start, select mode 1, save.
