Well Nissan's refresh of the 2nd gen Rogue has finally landed with a fair amount of changes. Looks like they're really beefing up the technology features to fight the Rav4. Unfortunately, they didn't make any changes to the anemic 2.5L engine that has grown long in the tooth. Maybe they'll decide to throw a turbo into it for the next major refresh in 2020/2021.

Exterior
  • New front grille and headlights (looks more like the Murano)
    Projector high beam lens
Smaller LED running lamps (less of a checkmark and closer to other late-model Nissans)
Rectangular fog light housing (not sure if it's LED)
Weird plastic cover over the Nissan logo
LED tail lamps with a swoopier design (other rear bulbs are still incandescent)
    Smoked tail lights?
    Much larger rear reflectors
    More chrome trim all around
New wheel rim options (similar to Rav4)
3 new colors (Palatial Ruby, Caspian Blue, Monarch Orange)
    Motion-activated liftgate
    Shark-fin antenna
Interior
  • New D-shaped steering wheel and controls
    Heated steering wheel
    New shift column
    Resigned center arm rest/storage box
    Memory seats and mirrors
Platinum Reserve interior package (more leather everywhere)
Other Features
  • Lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance
    Adaptive cruise control
    Rear cross-traffic warning
    Pedestrian collision detection
    Remote engine start (SV/SL)
    Automatic high beams

They've also introduced a new hybrid model that will boost up city fuel mileage at the slight cost of some overall cargo space. Goes directly against the Rav4 hybrid, which I haven't really seen on the streets so far.

Hybrid Model
  • 176 hp combined HP
    Auto start/stop and regenerative braking
    31/34 MPG (City/Highway - AWD)
Comes in SV and SL trims
Loss of 1.1 cu ft of overall cargo space behind rear seats
    No divide-n-hide
    No spare tire or subwoofer
Pure Drive Hybrid badging on tailgate and on front driver/passenger doors

All in all, a decent set of changes that will give some new life to the Rogue, keep on pace with their competitors, and probably help Nissan smash future sales records. I can't see the hybrid model getting too much of the sales pie but it's nice to have another option besides the Rav4 hybrid.

I want nothing but the tail lights. Nissan can keep the other exterior accents

D shaped steering wheel meaning flat on the bottom?damn I'd dig that. As well as the heated steering wheel. Everything else... Ehhh

Ok in the 5 mins I've been looking at pics on Google, it has grown on me... I think the squared-off-ness makes it look more masculine. So now I want the front bumper and tail lights on my 2015. Then Nissan can keep the rest lol

I'll take the new tail lamps, adaptive cruise control, motion-activated rear lift gate, remote start, and memory seats. Everything else I can deal without. I prefer the look of the current head lamps over the 2017 one.

Also forgot to mention that the SL comes with 19" wheels instead of the 18" rims on the pre-refresh models.

Wow that steering wheel and the new interior touches are pretty dope. The center console doesn't look like it's changed.

The exterior redesign doesn't do anything for me. In fact, the front end now resembles the new Murano more than anything else. If there's anything that appeals to me, it's the rectangular fog lights. I'd hope they're LED by now.

The Platinum Reserve Package - I wonder how much of that is truly genuine leather as opposed to synthetic material? I like the different color shown in the Car & Driver and Motor Trend articles linked above, but the color seems to be copying the choices available in the recent Toyota RAV-4.

What I'd really like to see is Nissan come out with a serious upscale luxury sport edition for the Rogue, a lower price point AMG edition if you will. Think a junior version of the Mercedes ML63. Upscale in terms of the model range that Rogue currently offers. A step up from the Millennial-focused NISMO line. It would be a product that is instead focused on the affluent middle age demographic that can afford to purchase this type of product.

Something that could finally live up to the Rogue nameplate. In its present configuration, it's more milquetoast than Rogue.

A Rogue with a turbo-charged engine (240hp+ please) with dual outlet low restriction exhaust, 19" or 20" wheels and adjustable sport suspension, Recaro-like leather seats, panoramic sunroof, sport exterior accents, LED interior lighting, adjustable color LED interior accent lighting. And a high-end stereo; Mark Levinson perhaps?

I'd gladly pay from the mid $40k to $50k for such a package. I feel the Rogue platform has a lot of potential, from everyday family CUV to a high-end luxury sport package. Nissan could test market such a product using the Rogue line and perhaps move to other Nissan products.

With the Platinum package, I'm sure the MSRP will be topping $35k for sure. All they need is a beefed up Juke turbo engine as a second option. Then, the fully loaded SL will be an affordable competitor to the Lexus NX series.

You are comparing the Rogue to an Mercedes ML63 ?!?! a $100,000 car? This is Nissan, not a premium car line.

What you should be looking at if you want a "lesser version" of the ML63 is the Infiniti QX70.

I like the shorter front end, it brings the wheels closer to the corners. I like the new taillights too. I think the changes will help against the competition.

As for the 2.5L engine, my 2016 Rogue gets better MPG's than my 2014 Ford Escape ECOBoost 1.6L turbo ever did (Ford 24.8, Nissan 31.4) and it's 0-60 times are almost identical.

Nissan would never sell the Rogue at $40K-$50K. Thats going into Murano/Pathfinder territory. At that price range, I would have bought my self BMW X3, Lexus NX 200 F Sport or even the Infinity QX50/60.

I just hope they keep allowing you to get all the tech stuff w/o sunroof and leather, like the current SV.

Whoa, I wasn't directly comparing the Rogue to the ML63, merely suggesting Nissan take in the same way Mercedes did the ML350 and make a sport version of the Rogue, an enthusiast's package if you will.

Nowhere did I say Nissan was a premium line, that's your interpretation. Calm down.

I kinda interpreted it like that too.

The most Nissan will probably do is a Nismo-esque trim level. Probably follow suit with the other models and call it the SR

does anyone know if the 2017 Nissan Rogue rear taillights would fit a 2014 Nissan Rogue SV? or are they going to be a little different where they will not fit properly?

Well if you look at the pics at the beginning of the post you can see what apperars to be slight differences in the shape of the tail lights. I would bet that they would not fit properly but I could be wrong. We can only wait until it lands on the dealer lot to find out for sure.

What differences in the shape of the tail lights do you see? There are no differences. The shapes are exactly the same. This is still the same body as the 2016, so Nissan isn't going to lose money by making a slight change in the body structure to accommodate a differently shaped tail light.

The tail lights, rear bumper, headlights, and front bumper are all interchangeable with the current Rogues. Same body... Same mounts

It doesn't seem like the front end would be directly interchangeable without changing out the lights, bumper cover and grille. The front is a bit of a departure over the currently styling.

The back looks mostly the same though besides the new tail lamps and a few cosmetic changes to the bumper cover. I can see most of the rear pieces being interchangeable.

Nothing was noted in the press materials so we'll probably have to wait until October to find out. Hopefully they add HD radio and make the interface similar to the Murano. Nissan has been one of the slowest adopters of HD radio.

"Sport-mode shifter" -- hopefully, this is a code word for the manual shift mode. Are they finally bringing it back?

It is indeed. If you go to the official 2017 Rogue page on NissanUSA they show an image of the interior with the shifter and console. You can see the shift gate as well as the markings for it.

I agree, I have compared the pictures of a 2014 (15 & 16 the same) and the 2017 side-by-side. It looks like the tail lights could be a direct replacement but not the headlights.

The headlights would have to be swapped with the bumper. They probably wouldn't work with the 14-16 bumper, but they will still swap onto the 14-16 where the hood and fenders are concerned.

In other words, all the body and trim pieces below the hood and forward of the fenders would have to be replaced to accommodate the 2017 headlights.

Potentially. I'd have to see them side by side to really know the dimensions. I never made a case about the headlights solely anyway. And at the end of the day, the headlights themselves are interchangeable... Period.

Thanks! I saw the pics, but just wanted to make sure. Well, that was the only thing that was holding me back. I'm considering a trade-in again.

Wonder what the pricing will be like.
2016 SL fully loaded FWD vs 2017 SL fully loaded FWD.
