there has been tests done on it already lol its a mid to high 5 second car, they compared it to the g37, not the S. it actually shocked me, it did very well.

i think the taurus is the SHO version.

I must say. I am actually impressed by Ford's effort on the Taurus. I'm no fan of American cars but I wouldn't mind driving around in this (the twin-turbo version). I guess I can ignore the fact that it only costs 3k less than a BMW 335i...

Although I presently detest buying America cars, this recent near disaster with the Big 3 has softened me a bit.. I guess I always just assumed that these companies would be safe, and they didn'tneed my business (especially since their cars were crap). But if they make a car that I like enough, I would consider buying one and doing my part to insure the future prosperity of American motors... I like my imports.. but I'm still a motherphucking American!

This car bothers me... I mean first off... it's a 3.5L V6 Engine pushing 365 HP! Yes, I know it's turbo'd, but still... most factory turbos don't push those numbers on a 3.5L engine. Secondly... the Taurus has always been a full sized family car since it was created. Why do they think this car would appeal to the car enthusiasts of the world?? That's like Toyota coming out with a 350HP Camry... it just sounds retarded!

i feel ya, but they're trying something different... for the sake of the Big 3... let's let em try and see how it turns out... there was no bigger anti-American car guy than me, but again, in light of recent economic events, i think all 3 companies are trying to think outside of the box...

remember, there are TONS of loyal Ford owners out there... how do you keep them from going over to the darkside and drinking the import kool-aid? You take your good old fashioned lemonade (all previous Ford Taurus models) and you turn that into a Mike's hard lemonade!

LOL, good quote there Doc. I'm not bashing Ford at all... I am not really a fan of American cars for the last 20 so years myself either, and if anything I think Ford is 10 steps ahead of GM or Chrysler when it comes in quality and innovation... but I just think they should have used this new engine on a different car to start with. The Taurus in my eyes from growing up as a kid was something your parents drove around to go shopping, not to do burnouts in the parking lot!

After reading this thread, I read this article on their EcoBoost engine (which I know Mehdi will to and worship) . Anyways... pretty interesting... Ford is going to be putting these into 500,000 new cars over the next few years. The stats seem impressive... they decided to go Turbo istead of Hybrid and still save 20% off MPG and 15% off CO2 Emissions while gaining HP... not a bad idea at all in my books.

WOW! i'm surprised no one has heard about this sooner... i just sort of thought everyone knew about it.... ford decided a while back that ppl want cars that are more fuel efficient and created something called "EcoBoost". Ford decided to downsize its engines and Turbo them so that when cruising you can get really good fuel economy and when you want power, the Turbo kicks in and you get plenty of power.... its the first company to make that sort of effort. they say that Ford is going to put that motor in the top of the line F150. they also have a 4 cylinder Turbo motor that they may also put inside the F150 with like 260 HP i think they said... so i dont think it will be too far fetched to expect the new focus to have a Turbo 4 cylinder beating us 3.5se guys (same power, less weight).

and about the taurus market, the SHO has always been a performance car and always had a following. they used to use a yamaha motor and had like 210 HP back when our altimas had like 145 HP and before BMW had any 3 series over 200 HP (except the M3... i think at the time it had 260 HP).

Aside from the power alone, the car looks sexy. My 2nd car was a 95 ford taurus, fond memories, lol.

My girlfriend loves her 02 Taurus for some reason. I hate it. If she wanted to upgrade to the 6 with turbo's, I would not mind one bit!

Yeah, this is old hat, My Dad had a 1993 Taurus SHO (whihc literally stands for Super High Output) with the Yamaha Engine, he loved that car, it was pretty nice for a "family car". the only problem is that this is going to be a 40K car.

I think this is the wrong way to go for Ford. I love the idea of factory turbos with factory warranties in mainstream cars, and I would jump on an Ecoboost engine in a Fusion-sized platform, but this is pretty short-term thinking.

If gas goes back to $4-6/gallon in a few years (and I bet it will), no one's going to care that an Ecoboost engine gets 20% better fuel economy than a standard N/A engine. Ford should be working on hybrids and electric vehicles if they want to be around for a long time. Instead they'll be focusing a huge part of their attention and engineering resources on these new engines. Anyone care to take a guess at the 5-year failure rate of the Ecoboost turbos?

I'll support Ford and the Big 3 when they can put out decent cars at competitive prices. But until they can cut employee benefits or get government subsidies like the imports, that's probably not going to happen any time soon.

what are you talking about? people NEED trucks and will ALWAYS NEED trucks! they dont like trucks because of the bad MPG but if Ford starts putting out turbo charged 4 cylinder and 6 cylinders instead of big V8's, they're obviously going to get better fuel economy and make people want to buy those instead of the competition. what alternatives do they have? spend billions of dollars on hybrid programs which Toyota is so far ahead on that it would blow away any hybrid they could make? ya, make a hybrid that fails to beat the competition and waste billions in the process.... this is the best thing they could do.

Who's talking about trucks? I'm talking about engines.

The "give up while you're behind" strategy is not going to keep Ford afloat when the US starts shifting to alternative fuels/electric vehicles.

They have plenty of alternatives. Heres one: license the hybrid drive technology from Toyota. Or use the electric powertrain from Tesla. Or GM. 2 minutes of internet searching should turn up some others.

The looks nice from the front, almost like the previous FX35. The rear, eh I'm not liking it all that much.

As for all that horse power, I'm sure it'll need it just to get around. I'm betting like most new midsize cars it'll probably weigh in at a nice fat 3500-3700 lbs especially the AWD, or more.

I think the Charger and 300 are already there as far as "family cars" with lots of power that an enthusiast would or wouldn't want to drive. So this will be yet another alternative. Except hopefully it won't weigh in at 4000 lbs...

the twin turbo V6 in the taurus is going into the F150 in 1-2 years they said... tucks need to be very reliable so there sort of testing out the motor in the taurus... they've had it in a Lincoln for a couple years now (forgot which model). who cares about hybrids when the number one selling vehicle forever has been a truck (the F150). if they make the F150 fuel efficient, more people would be inclined to buy that then they would a prius fighter. the thing is, here in America they look at the name more then they do the vehicle. that is why Infiniti, Lexus, Scion, Acura, etc, only exist in America. Prius already has the name that everyone knows. if they make a hybrid it MAY steal SOME sales but if they make a fuel efficient truck they WILL steal MANY sales from chevy, dodge, GM, Toyota, Nissan.

PLUS Ford has always been about quantity. look at rolls royce for example, VERY EXPENSIVE but limited quantity. if you apply that to hybrids, why would Ford want to make something EXTREMELY fuel efficient and have the other vehicles suck on gas? Ford is about quantity so they would like to make they're entire line up more fuel efficient instead of 1 car getting AMAZING MPG.... they will have Ford Fusions better on gas and more powerful then altimas, taurus better on gas and more powerful then Maxima, focus better on gas and more powerful then sentra, twin turbo V6 F150 WAAAAAY better on gas then the 5.6L V8 Titan... they're trying to go at the WHOLE car market, not a small specific branch.

they say they are going to do that. they say it will be more powerful then the current 4.6L V8 and more fuel efficient.... i think they'll keep the supercharged 5.4L though... they NEED to have at least 1 V8 model in the mustang line up lol but Ford announced that they're putting the AWD system and TT V6 into the Ford Fusion and making it the SVT Fusion or something... they hope to have it as a cheap alternative to the Audi S4.

Again, why are you talking about trucks and brand loyalty when the original point was about engines? You can put any type engine in any platform - this has nothing to do with trucks or sedans or Acuras or Fords.

Here's my point: an Ecoboost engine is an incremental improvement on traditional engine technology, and it will not save Ford when gas is back at $4-6/gallon.

I keep talking about trucks because this engine is made primarily for the F150. they're just testing it out in other vehicles so when it makes its way to the F150, all the kinks will be worked out.... i'm not trying to attack you in any way so i'm sorry if it seems that way. its just that in my opinion, this is something amazing that Ford is trying to do. anyone can leas hybrid technology and attempt to make a hybrid (like Nissan did with the hybrid altima... which gets 1/2 the fuel economy of a prius), but to rework your entire line up from small cars to big trucks with all new motors that are fuel efficient as well as powerful is something amazing.

why do so many people on here have the 3.5se instead of the 2.5s? why do so many people buy 350Z, 370z, G35, G37, etc? its not because of fuel economy or because they are cheap. people WANT fast cars however, the price of gas is stopping some people from getting more powerful cars. Ford sees what people NEED and what people WANT and is trying to bridge the gap with minimal loss. more power, better MPG, thats what people want and that's what Ford is going for with the whole line up of Ecoboost engines that they're putting into their entire line up of vehicles.

They would do much better bridging the gap if they stopped selling cars weighing a good bit over 2 tons

What I'm saying is that a car company can attempt to address those needs and wants using any engine technology, including hybrids and possibly electric vehicles.

For example, they could scale up the hybrid engine and put it in a truck for example. With all that storage space you could easily double or triple the battery size and impact the cargo space only slightly. It would definitely more difficult than slapping a turbo and direct injection engine onto an existing conventional design, but it would have the potential to double the gas mileage instead of improving it by 10-20%.

Truck sales are tanking and trucks are being traded in by the boatload under cash-for-clunkers exactly because they get horrible gas mileage, so I would say fuel economy IS important to truck buyers. Money is money after all.

WOW WTFFF are they smoking. Yah if it really ends up weighing that much, that's just an abomination. It didn't even look that big or heavy from the pictures.. Geez. Wtf do they build these things from? Depleted uranium? Or probably surplus WW2 tank armor plates... Of course that would actually make some sense since most of their recent engines with a few exceptions such as the 3.5 and newer 2.0 have been stone age in comparison to other brands (typical Big 3 crap -- Mustang's 4.0L engine with 210 whopping horses and even worse mpg than 3.5L...wow...)

thing is, to make a completely new hybrid truck is going to cost money... it will most likely get better MPG then a Twin Turbo V6. However, what about the initial investment? it is going to cost much more to make a hybrid then Twin Turbo a car... heres a link to a Ford web site where they talk about how long it would take for the cost to be worth it

http://media.ford.com/article_...27455

specifically this paragraph

“Compared with the current cost of diesel and hybrid technologies, customers in North America can expect to recoup their initial investment in a 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine through fuel savings in approximately 30 months. A diesel in North America will take an average of seven and one-half years, while the cost of a hybrid will take nearly 12 years to recoup – given equivalent miles driven per year and fuel costs,” he said.

I personally am not a fan of going hybrid because ask all the analysis and they will say that hybrids are a temporary fix for a long term problem. Hydrogen is a good alternative fuel and Ford already has a full size Hydrogen truck that they made and are testing. instead of spending money on hybrids, its best to make something almost as good for cheap and focus on making other things like Hydrogen powered vehicles.

Ford's new styling makes me want to vomit (literally, I felt a bit queasy looking at the new Taurus).

Ford needs to do a spin off company if they want to reinvent themselves. Toyota got a clue, why can't Ford? Oh, because they aren't innovative, have fugly, overweight, inefficient cars...oops.

I give them props for the TT, but the car is still ugly and WHY WHY WHY keep the Taurus name?
