And that's the real reason they're going with the EcoBoost: unwillingness to invest in substantially new technology because, in the short-term, it's always cheaper to go with what you know.
Hydrogen is going to require a complete overhaul of fuel delivery infrastructure in the US. That's a 20-yr play at best. Ecoboost is not going to keep you alive for 20-yrs when gas is back above $4/gallon.
Ford is doing the same thing the Big 3 have always done - looking 5 feet down the tracks when a train is barreling down at them at 80mph. In the 2000s it was super profitable gas-guzzler SUVs/trucks, now it's the standard internal combustion powertrain.
My next car will most likely be a hybrid - by that time (5-7 years) the technology will be well-established and corner-store techs will know how to service them. Who knows, maybe they'll even come with twin-turbos!
