Just found this on another forum about a recall on certain Rogues - could explain some of the steering noise people are talking about. Here is the link: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/r...email

Here is the full recall information:

Vehicle Make / Model: NISSAN / ROGUE

Model Year(s): 2008-2009

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V411000

Summary:

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 ROGUE VEHICLES. A SCREW IN THE STEERING GEAR HOUSING COVER MAY LOOSEN OVER TIME AND COULD FALL OUT. AS IT LOOSENS, THE STEERING RESPONSE OF THE VEHICLE MAY BE COMPROMISED BUT THE DRIVER WILL RETAIN STEERING CONTROL.

Consequence: THE SCREW MAY EVENTUALLY COME OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR COVER. IF LARGE STEERING INPUTS ARE MADE WITH THE COVER SCREW MISSING THE PINION SHAFT MAY COME OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR RESULTING IN A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT WHETHER THE STEERING GEAR COVER SCREW IS LOOSE AND WILL BE RETIGHTENED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATION. DEALERS WILL ALSO INSTALL A COVER PLATE TO PREVENT THE SCREW FROM POSSIBLY COMING OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Notes: OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

The Japanese automaker is recalling 163,659 2008 and 2009 model year Rogue crossovers due to a potentially serious safety issue involving the crossover's steering gear housing cover. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reporting that a screw could loosen, potentially causing the steering response to be compromised. In a worst-case scenario, the screw could come out completely, and if large steering inputs are made, the pinion shaft could come out, resulting in total loss of steering.

i just called my dealer yesterday and he says that there are no recalls out for the rogue(no TPMS recall or steering recall) he also said that they would know months in advance if there was to be a recall

i mentioned the recalls happening in the states and he said that they are manufactured at different plants so the recall might not affect Canadian rogues

Harryg: I had the same experience today when I went to get an oil change. I mention it on my post for CVT extended (hidden) warranty by Nissan.

This is the number for Nissan North America. You can call and give your VIN# and they will tell you if your vehicle was affected.

OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

That is a big fat lie: All Rogues are built in the same plant in Japan.

For sure, some of us will be touched by these recalls, they are just slooowwww.

I would like to bring up something that may sound crazy. As most Rogue owers know at around 1300 rpm or around 25-40 mph there is a vibration felt in the steering wheel do the low rpm's in the chosen gearing ratios. This is how the Rogue functions. I can only assume that if the steering wheel vibrates then the whole rack and steering box must also vibrate and shake alot at 1300 rpm. Over time this vibration can cause the bolt/screw to loosen up and back out requiring the need to be retorqued/tightened and needing a cover plate. Not many cars have this vibration and I have not heard of this bolt loosening on other cars

I'll wait for a recall letter if there is an issue.

As for steering noises, I had mine fixed two weeks ago, it was air bag wires that needed to be rerouted behind the steering column.

If somebody has an affected vehicle how long does it take the dealer to process it and send out letters?

A month or two?

Nissan corporate issues the letters, not your dealer. If you do not get a letter soon and you are worried about your vehicle, I would call Nissan.

If you have problems getting through, call your local dealer and see if your VIN number is included in the recall. If it is, you can take it in for repairs without a letter.

Thanks, here is the full recall notice from Transport Canada:

Quote »Transport Canada Recall # 2009303

Recall Date: 2009/10/19

Notification Type: Safety Mfr

System: Steering

Manufacturer Recall Number:

Units Affected: 23,323

Category: SUV

Recall Details:On certain vehicles, the steering gear housing cover screw may have been manufactured out of specification and the axial tension between the screw and gear housing may deteriorate over time. This could allow the screw to gradually loosen, which will cause the steering wheel to exhibit noticeable looseness from the steering assembly. If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the screw may eventually come out of the steering gear housing. If large steering inputs are made with the cover screw missing, the pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear. This may result in a loss of steering control, which could lead to a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will inspect whether the steering gear cover screw is loose. If it is loose, it will be retightened to the proper specification. In addition, the dealer will install a cover plate to prevent the screw from possibly coming out of the steering gear.

I contacted my dealer today and low and behold my car is affected.

I will be going in december 2nd as that's when I'm doing a servicing....get both recalls done, TMPS sensor and the steering, as well as a brake service and oil change.

Could have brought it in sooner but I figure three more weeks won't hurt.

I called the local Nissan dealer on 11-10 and determined my 2009 Rogue manufactured 11-08 was included in both recalls. I am taking it in tomorrow for the work. No problems with either steering or TPMS-just preventative.

Dealer did both repairs on 11-11. It took about 60 min to do them.

I just called Woodfield Nissan and my '08 SL AWD is also affected by this recall. I'm taking it in Thursday morning to have them check it out along with my wheel bearings once again.

I have a 08 Rogue and called the Nissan 800 number today as previously posted. I read them my vin # and was told that my car had no recalls. They told me both recalls are vin spicific and not all cars are affected. I live in N.J. and I am wondering if the recall will first deal with Canada and the more northern states first. As far as the TPMS recall there is obviously more of a road salt concern in the north.

The steering system recall is not dependent on 'road salt' in northern states/Canada. Either your vehicle is affected or not, there is no 'delay'.

I'm pretty happy with how this was dealt with, so I have confidence that any future recalls will be dealt with properly.

I'm glad to know my dealer gets the recalls in a timely fashion and that if I'm not aware of it I will receive a letter if my car is affected.

Thanks for the info. The Rogue is in the shop today to address both recalls (the steering bolt and the bad TPMS sensors) and the NTB for the screwy fuel sensors. They told me that Nissan overnighted the parts from Japan.

It's a bit of a disappointment that these problems exist at all, but at least Nissan is good enough to own up to their mistakes.

Is there a notice or something that goes out to Nissan Techs for the fix on recals ?

Meaning are all Nissan dealerships aware on how to fix the recalls?

I got my recal notice 2 days ago & have an appt to take it in this Friday. Did it really take 3 hrs like the recall notice says it will take? If so, bring a lot of reading materials everyone!

Nope, it took just under 1.5 hours, but I went just before the recalls were mailed out. I may have been the first person that had this job done at this dealership, so it may have taken longer because of that.
