Hey guys. My nissan Bluebird Shifter goes into reverse(R) only. It then goes to N but the dashboard shows it is in R still. It wont go beyond that. What could be the problem. Do I need to replace the shifter or might it be a provlem with the shifter cable or gearbox. Please help!

Research points to the Bluebird ending production in 2001 with the Altima having a completely different chassis from then on.

Anyway, there is a neutral position switch and a back up switch that can be tested with a voltmeter pretty easily. There is a shift cable and a select cable. The select cable can be adjusted.

If you have a... I just realized, it's different depending on what transmission you have. What do you have? Manual, Automatic, or CVT.

Here's a link to the transmission chapter of the FSM. It might help.

You might want to post in the Sentra section. The Sylphy Bluebird is closely related to the US Sentra, not the US Altima. Good luck

Well, with the CVT, I don't think you have a cable. I think it's merely a series of switches (buttons) that go to wires that tell the CVT what to do. It is described thoroughly in the FSM that I gave you a link to, starting at page TM-105. Please try and use the FSM. The solution to your issue is 99% likely to be in there.

While you're at it, do you have any check engine light codes? Can you get a scanner and check for those please? There might be a clue as to what's not working if you have some codes.

Also, your description could be elaborated a bit. There's more diagnoses in the FSM for the CVT and it has to do with what does and doesn't work. You don't state if you can put the selector in P, so I'm stuck thinking your car only goes into R and N (per your words), so it won't start or run, and you can't drive or anything. But if you can drive it be sure and tell us. Maybe it drives in reverse only? I can't tell. Can you put it in P? Can you start the car while in P? Symptom diagnoses starts on page TM-196

Hello, yes, The car goes to P, I can start it and only drives in Reverse. I called my mech and we disconnected the cable coming to the gear selector and we noticed that there is no problem with the shifter. He said it could be a problem with the gear box and as he said, "sometimes CVT locks it self as a safety feature and we needed to replace the top part which reads the gears to the dashbord and open the gearbox and unlock it" I dont know the part name and I am still waiting for him to get the spare part for that it. There are no Engine lighhs and Engine starts well. I can only drive in Reverse.

Okay, that's a bit more clear. I see there's a lock up system on page 102 and a shift lock on page 108... Maybe they're related to the issue.

I searched a bit more and found this older thread. Similar stuff, but different I guess. Please read the thread. Changing your transmission fluid is an option and having a clogged pressure line solenoid cleaned was another option. Maybe you can glean some useful information from it...
