I drive a 2002 QX4 and have an issue.

Wondering if anyone has experienced this problem. I'll be driving along with the stereo on and all of a sudden the volume shoots up to 30 very quickly. It's like I've pushed the up button on the steering wheel controls. I'm wondering if I have a loose wire, or if there is something wrong with the head unit. Anyone have this happen before?

first off, id try to narrow the problem down. unhook the steering wheel controls and see if that fixes it or not.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I was thinking about trying that, but was a bit nervous getting at the controls without ending up with an airbag in my face. Can I just pop that plastic piece off behind the controls there? Or do I need to remove something else?

Thanks again for the quick feedback

not quite sure how to access the plug behind the controls but as far as the airbag, unplug the battery if it makes you feel better. and remember all airbag wiring has yellow insulation on it.

Good advice. Will certainly do that. Just in case I can't see an easy fix in the controls on the steering wheel, I may just disconnect the controls form the back of the stereo. Does anyone have a link to a good diagram of how to remove the deck from the dash, so I can get at those controls? Thanks again for the help.

this link tells how to get the top vent and clock out... zerothread/337309

then youll see 2 screws under that piece that need to come out. after that you can pull the big trim piece off and unplug the defrost and hazard harnesses. 4 easily visible screws hold the radio in. im not sure which plug does the controls, might have to use some trial and error.
