2-3 seconds of grinding noise after start up!!!

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

one day when i get out of work, i found out i had some weird grinding noise after the first start at night! it happens after the engine cranking and a bit grinding noise for 2-3 second. then i turned off the car right away and starts it once again, the engine sounds Ok the second time. i thought i was wrong, then i drove home. The next morning, i go start my car, then i hear the same grinding noise for like 2-3 seconds, i know its def from somewhere close to the engine, bcoz my driver door was open and i heard it clearly, then i shut off the car, and tried to start again, and its fine, i have no idea where the heck the noise come from, outside temperature was around 20 degree for both cases....it just start annoy me so much, bcoz i just got my car back from the dealership for fixing the steering rack noise and now it comes the noise from the engine compartment, infiniti drives my crazy Anyone experienced before??? please help!!! I know the dealer would ignore my problem when i bring it to them, because its only happen the first start in cold weather....the second tried will have nothing, i might tried to record the sound with a camera to show them

i have never heard of this problem nor do i have it. by any chance is your car parked outside?maybe @ 20 degrees some of the parts are frozen? so that first crank you hear some weird sounds?

It's not the fuel pump humming noise (zerothread/356268), is it? (I think that only affected the 2008 EX. And it's more of a humming rather than grinding noise.)

Could it be the started motor hanging up...grinding starter gear on flywheel...won't release quickly?

It could be the power steering pump.. If its low, it could make that noise before circulating the fluid, and once the fluid hits all the parts it stops because its lubricated.

Check the fluids :-)

Ya guys I finally Come back from the dealer and they told me there's air in my power steering system that causing the sounds like this!!! They were helping me to replace my steering rack, so they might be forgot to double chEck the fluid and air before give it back to me!!! So now I got it and so far so good!!! Hopefully I don't have to go back to the dealer

I am having the same problem on my 2005 pathfinder. 99000 miles. Does not happen at dealers. Usually occurs after the car has been sitting awhile either in garage or outside when weather is cold.

I have exactly the same issue...thank you for sharing...Will print this and show to my dealer when I will be doing next oil change. I also hesitated to go to them because I would not be able to reproduce this noise. It happens only in the morning when temp is below 60 degrees outside and goes away after 20-30 seconds.

I think this is what I'm hearing when I start my 05 Murano up in the morning or whenever it's been sitting in the cold for a period of time. Is this something that would be covered under warranty? I think it has around 66K miles but I have an extended warranty . If fluid levels are low that might cause it as well?

Thanks!

this is infinity ex35 2010,
this is a brand new car,
hear humming noise during acceleration or climbing up the hill.
dealer say all infinity does that.
can this be normal?

If you mean a quiet high-pitched noise when you press the gas pedal, between 1000-2000 RPM, see this thread: zerothread/385835-ringing-engine-noise-anyone
(I don't know of anyone who's had it fixed in the EX yet, but a similar problem has been fixed in the G with a new Engine Control Module)
