$200 can't be right, louiegz, ya can't buy a BMW key fob for $200.

I don't believe the US spec SMG's have the launch control, do they? But it's probably an easy software upgrade.

Heavy D, I wasn't saying that the SMG was $200. I was saying that the difference between a Steptronic and an SMG was about $200. $225 to be exact. I'm looking at the website right now. A Steptronic is $1275 and the SMG is $1500. Remember the 3 comes standard with a manual transmission. If you wanted an auto, would you rather spend $1275 for a Steptronic or $1500 for the SMG. Go to the BMW web site and see the numbers.

Yea, I can't believe they tuned out the launch control of the US m3's... that is heartbraking!

Here's the deal with the launch control. The E46 has a bunch of easter eggs you can do with the OBC to do a bunch of cool thing. It's on this BMW Furum link.

For those who dont want to read the whole post, here's the highlight.

38. Apparently "there's a cheat code in the software running the BMW M3's sequential manual gearbox (SMG). Press the right buttons in the right order and the car will launch you from a stop after revving the engine to 5,000 rpm". "But there is a catch. In Europe, where the feature isn't so hush-hush, doing more than 15 launches voids the car's warranty. Federal laws prohibit such stipulations here, so BMW has turned down the which. US-spec cars are programmed to wind to only 2,500 rpm. That's why you have to ask your dealer to install the European software. Most will happily oblige"

OK, I understand louiegz. The SMG can launch so hard it feels like the rear diff is going to fly out the back end of the car like those old AAMCO commercials.

Maybe one day all autos will be auto shifted manuals. Best of both worlds, IMHO.
