1996 infiniti i30 inspection failure

today I took my i30 to get inspected. it failed because of codes p0325 (knock sesnor 1 circuit malfunc. and a p0446 (evap. vent ctrl malfunction). I know a little on changin the knock sensor. but I have no idea what that evap code is. is it just that it could be faulty purge lines. or something else? also what EXACTLY does the knock sensor do and how does it save you gas? any knowledge would greatly be apprectaited. thx.

The knock sensor detects pinging in the engine due to low octane rating or other reasons and retards the engine timing until the pinging is no longer detected. This causes your car to run at less than peak performance, and is why you should run the fuel grade specified in your owners manual.
