Hi I'm posting here for my son who bought his dream car, 1991 Nissan 240SX. Since we bought it we have had a number of problems with it and seeing as it has a 2.0 liter 16 valve motor we are having troubles figuring out what is wrong with it and what parts to order for it. It is having troubles running. It stalls when coming to a stop. sometimes the starter works and sometimes not. It blows black smoke on start up which clears up after a few minutes and turns to white smoke then when warm the smoke disapears all together.

I really want to help my son out but aside from being able to replace parts i'm definitely no mechanic and neither is he. We've had it at a garage for a few days now and they said it could be a number of different problems but we really need someone who is more of an expert with these cars.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank You

Congrats on the new addition to your family! Of course I mean the car. I think the 240sx is a great dream car! I also think you found a really good forum/ club for knowledge and experience, ideas and inspiration, conversation and entertainment.

I would suggest (if I may), that your son get a username and profile on here, to introduce himself and what type of car he has (a 240sx comes in so many flavors). Maybe online identity is a concern, so you two make this a joint account father son sort of deal and introduce yourselves as team awesome or something. There's organization in the forums with new user hello threads, one time question threads, stickies (sort of like FAQ), etc. Lurking around (searching for data) and getting familiar with the website can be very useful and fun.

We like to help with diagnoses, sollutions opinions, etc. We need data and it's usually best to work on one issue at a time. Your car seems to have several familiar issues but it's tough to help without data. Example: a 240sx comes with a 2.4 liter engine in the USA, so maybe you have a swap or live in another country and if I have to guess if you have the turbo or not and then my help isn't very useful or accurate. We'll help you get it to start consistently, then idle consistently, then drive around reliably, then lower, cleaner, louder, lighter, faster, stronger, safer... whatever you're goals are!

Yeah, we'll need to know what engine is in there for sure. Post a picture of the engine bay if you could.
Here's a link for how to post pictures:

If its an SR20DET (2 liter turbo... one of the more common engine swaps), you'll want to check for boost leaks and vacuum leaks from the turbo/around the engine.
Here's where it gets technical - if the blow off valve is vented to atmosphere (and not recirculated), you'll be venting metered air (from the mass airflow sensor), causing a rich condition. This would be the black smoke you see at startup, and most likely the cause of stalling when you come out of gear.

Check your oil and make sure it doesn't look like chocolate milk. White smoke (steam) typically means a blown head gasket, although if its cold out, it could just be regular steam from the combustion process.
