Car: installing stereo systems and minor performance upgrades

Post

it all depends on what your listening to the quality of the subs, the boxes, and how and where its installed in the car i have 2 12inch audiobahns that used to be in 1cu ft sealed boxes and in my trunk beat loud for rap almost too boomy for techno and metal. Same subs in sealed 3 cu ft boxes in my backseat check my link in my sig for pics anyway they sound almost perfect with metal and heavy double bass drums, ok with techno as long as it isn't to fast, and well now with rap i have to turn them down or else they sound to muddy and distorted at high volumes. So what i'm trying to say is with the right box you can make almost any sub(s) work to your liking

One last thing Measure twice Cut Once.......

actually, come to think of it, i'd prefer 13's over 10's or 12's anyday... you got the w7 and the Focal Polykevs, both are killer subs and they don't conform to the standards that society has placed on car audio. its the battle against hegemony :ylsuper damn hegemony

yeah english is such an easy language... i wish i had a really difficult language as my native language... my aunt picked up english while she was over here... she speaks like 5 or i think more different languages. english was a joke for her. she picked it up easily. of course she's not perfect but a lot better at english than i am at other languages, for the most part.

not to start an argument, but i mean even if the w7 comes in 13" configuration, JL, like you said before, is pretty mainstream.;)

sorry about that.... my bad i figured there was alot of good answers already so i started to loose my train of thought. whats the primary genre of music you listen to? and a thing i learned at install school is teh formula for a great sounding system 80% install, 20% components. Basically saying you could have 2 knockout 12's lets say kicker just for the hell of it but if your boxes aren't built the the recommended specs for the subs your not going to get full potential from them . Or you could flip it around and buy afew Road Gear subs from wally mart and build some boxes exactly to their specs and they will sound decent.

So in the end really think about the room you have to work with in you car, what your intentions are (db dragracing, sq, or a mix of both), how much power your wanting to put to them, what music you mostly listen to, and how much your willing to spend on the entire setup( buying a good set of 10's then your broke so you cheap on the box, not a smart idea).

for a semi cheap good sounding setup i'd get a single mid to high end 12" (alpine type-r, rockford he2, or similar) in a properly built ported box have one custom made or build it yourself and 600watts or so and you should be in pretty shape. you might eventually have to get anouther 12 and bigger amp due to hearing loss though....

I got two JBL GTO series 10" subs on a Twoofer Crutchfield sale for like 100 bucks, and in a hatchback 240sx they hit plenty hard for everything but trying to be a bass-fag. they take care of my 20-200hz needs and do a great job, especially for only costing 100 bucks for both of them. Add a 100 buck amp and a little carpentry and i have some awesome budget bass. They came out to 25 pounds per enclosed sub in a .75 cu ft MDF box. I still wonder if i should rip em out for weight savings or not. A 10" sub or two done right should be all the bass any normal person should need/want.
