Started it up this AM and sounded aweful!! HUGE TICK/KNOCK coming from the engine bay. Immediately shut off the engine and after 30 minutes or so checked the oil. Was down 1/4 qrt. Added 1/4 qrt and started it again to that HUGE TICK/KNOCK sound. It slowly quieted down to a moderate knock.Drove it up to the Infiniti dealer and by the time I got there, we could not hear it. Left it there for them to check out.

Yeah, will do.Went back to get the loaner and they said they hadn't been able to get it to do it again. They';re going to let it sit over night. It was so loud that my wife heard it from inside the house and came out to see what the ticking was.....Anybody else have this happen once and never again???very strange... They did ask if I had ever had a different intake on it, and I said 'no' cause it hasn't.Then, they said it could have been a big piece of carbon that broke loose in the intake.....28K miles!!! Could have been that 87 octane that I HAD to use this last shortage!!!!

did the tick follow the rpm's? meaning if you accelerate does the tick speed up?

IM(hemi)O ticks are usually lifters. You could have a lifter that drained or is failing? It would be difficult to diagnose. Can you put a long screw driver on the valve cover and up to your ear with the tick happening and listen for the cylinder the tick is coming from?

I had a lifter failing on my hemi, I would have went to 6.1 lifters if the transmission and engine had stayed together.

Sorry about your situation. The G-35 is absolutely a car of wonder---does befuddling things that somehow never cripples it from actually running. It may make noise and funny sounds but somehow it never quits---just keeps on going.

That sucks man.

Its really tough to say what that noise could be since there are so many things.

Make sure to let us know after you hear back from the stealer.

I can assure you it was not caused by the use of regular. With close to 75k miles I've had no problems using regular.Perhaps a brief failure of the oil pump or sludge in the oil pan?How often do you change your oil?

hey your still under warranty... Don't worry about it... Maybe they will put in an updated motor lol and it will then be like new...

I wish mine consumed a little more oil and I would have them do the swap for sure!

Telcoman will defend regular gas from now till the end of the world Even Infiniti cannot win this argument with Telcoman.

Good call on taking it in quickly. I have a few questions;

How cold was it the night before it happened?

Did the car sit for any period of time, Lifter leak down?

Where you on an incline, or any new parking spot?

That is not a common concern on this year. Sounds like an oil pressure concern, more than anything.

The "updated" motor is only for the manual trans models, I do not know if you have a stick, but I also do not think you have the VHR motor.

Was not cold the night before.Had been driven the evening before.Car does not sit on an incline.Automatic with 28K miles.Oil changed every 3k to 4k with M1 Syn and Nissn filter.

Infiniti let it sit over night and they did hear it briefly the next AM.They let it sit 1 hour and started it and the knocking was evening briefer. They are thinking it's in the timing chain area....I do not like this dealer. Wish my Nissan dealer could do Infiniti warranty work.

I really do not know at this point, my guess.... something is broken. Oil pumps, timing guides and chains are not a common issue on VQs.

Good Luck, keep us posted

Tampa~ I highly doubt this is the same issue, do you have the new motor?

I cannot condemn a part without seeing it but you have the VHR in an 06 w/ manual trans and that may be the issue, I was un aware that you already had a new trans.

SVT~ It has to be something internal, have you noticed anything recently that is out of the ordinary with your car?

Steve, the car had been running extremely good lately, but I think that is due more to the cooler weather.

Infiniti called to say that they would perform the warranty work.Evidentally, they have to get it approved since I opt to NOT let them bend me over for an oil change. The service manager initially had a little attitude about my records (hand written mileage/date/service) & a printout from my local Nissan dealer showing all of the filters I purchased.Whatever... OK, not going to get on my soapbox about one of the only times I DID get my car serviced years ago they stripped the threads and I lost 2 quarts of oil on a trip!!! Oil is the life-blood of one of my most expensive expenditures and I do not trust many with it. /rant

As I was leaving the office today, my manager was explaining to me the research he had done on this topic and found that warranty work can not LEGALLY be denied due to lack of service documenation. I'll have to get his references and post them.

I'll probably start keeping more receipts in the future, but I really don't care if I HAVE to drive their loaner an extra day while they get their approval!!!

What are they getting approval for?

I understand the warranty side of the issue they are hardcore ball busters about something things, especially expensive things. Service records are hard to prove if you do your own, at least you have the oil filter receipts.

I completely understand why you would not trust other people, I sweat whenever I have to take the wifes car in for work and I have also run into issues with my lack of service records, I don't even have oil filter receipts, I feel her transmission starting to go and I feel a disagreement brewing.

They were getting approval to rip off the timing chain cover and fix the problem. I don't claim to be a master mechanic, but one of my best friends is. A Master car and Master truck mechanic. Really not sure WHAT that means. But, he is semi-retired now teaching diesel mechanics at a local community college. He used to run the heavy truck shop for the City of Charlotte. His home garage (3 bay with compressor lines and lights hanging down) is where I take my car when I think I might get over my head!!My first car was a 69 Mach 1 that got me thru HS and college. I worked on my car because I didn't have the $$$ to pay somebody else and believe me, that car gave me plenty of practice!!!I actually like working on my cars! (real job is programmer...boring!!)Started off with Furds, but have long switched to Nissan/Infinitis!!!Sorry, rambling....beers do that to me!!!

Got the 05 G35S back today! They replaced the timing belt tensioner.Said it was not pumping up properly.

The service advisor called and said that when they pulled the cover the engine was very clean and there was no slugg.I asked him. 'So, it looked as if I had changed the oil every 3K??'He said 'Yes sir' He was very nice and I treated him with a lot of respect as I would anybody. However, the service manager needs to have a few beers!!! Still don't care for that guy!

There is a reason I see the same faces year after year at my Nissan dealership , but every time I go into Infiniti they have a whole new line up!!!

That would definatly cause a rattle for a while, interesting I wonder how the narrowed it down? That is not a common issue as far as I have seen. I'm really glad you got it fixed.

I would love to have a garage like that, three bays I don't really have that much work to warrant something that fun though, maybe someday I'll make a Nico garage in my yard.

Starting out working on classic Fords and switching to an Infiniti is a radical change, there are more wires in the trunk than the entire Mach 1. I must say though I took a new Mustang out today for a flogging in the rain, having not driven one since high school I was giddy at the sound the flowmasters make when the throttle is pressed is very manly. What a noisy toy not very fast but loud.

As for the high turnover rate at Infiniti dealers it is a sad fact of the high line business, especially with the crazy games that they like to play with the writters. The surveys are so important to all of us but especially to the SAs. My writter has lost his pay check over 1 customer being disappointed about the fact that he was not given more than a 10% coupon.

I am personally a little miffed about one guy who came in with an 03 with a broken seat switch, and failed power window motors. I took his door apart and got his motors to work temporarily and removed the seat switch and made it all work again at least to move the seat back enough to where it would be used for a short while. He returned the favor for my free help by bombing service on the survey. This one negative survey cost me an award that I have spent the last year working on, I had made it several months with perfect CSI and was rated one of the highest techs in the region for the quarter and now I have to start all over again.

Sorry about the mini rant, it still stings.

WOW, that is pretty tough! Sorry to hear! It's a shame that there are so many bad consumers out there.

And, yes big diff. between my old Mach 1 and the Infiniti!!!And, I thought my Mach handle good!!! Nissan won me over years ago when I got my son a used 93 240SXSE!!!

Yeah, I still like mustangs cause my first car was one. But, we've owned more Nissans/Infinit's than Fords now.

Oh, my buddy's garage has a black 2door 56 chevy in one bay and a 32 Furd hot rod in the other. His and his wife's cars are both Toyota's.Helping him work on cars over the years has really made me appreciate the imports!!! Actually put together so that they can be worked on!

The people at Infiniti of Scottsdale are awesome.

Infiniti always calls me after the services and I always give them

SVT, they said timing BELT or timing CHAIN tensioner. I hope this 7800 RPM motor isn't driven by a BELT!!

My 327 in my jeep has timing gears!

Oh I missed that, it has three chains, numerous guides and tensionors. The tensioner that must have failed was the main guide chain one, it connects the crank to the intake cams. and the intake cams drive the exhaust cams.

The last Infiniti was the VG30.

Steve:

I understand. The same thing happened when I got mad with a service consultant----his survey was not that great. when i found out, one sales guy who was my friend discretely told me that the guy nearly lost his job. I called the Service consultant and apologized to him as i wasn't aware of the impact of the surveys. Since then, i became buddies witht he Service Consultant and i always give him a stellar review on the surveys. I think giving a single customer that much power isn't a great idea. I think maybe three customer complaints or more is a better reflection of bad service.
